Lesson Plan: Leanne Wheaton Magill PS Unit/Topic: Algebra and equations Key Learning Area: Mathematics NATIONAL CURRICULUM

OUTCOMES:
(Key Knowledge and Skills students should achieve in the lesson taken from relevant curriculum documents.)

Date: start Week 1 term 4 Year Level: 7

Classroom management goals:

maintain student engagement, quiet discussion during group time and quiet private work where appropriate. Introduce the concept of variables as a way of representing numbers using letters (ACMNA175) 2. Create algebraic expressions and evaluate them by substituting a given value for each variable (ACMNA176) 3. Extend and apply the laws and properties of arithmetic to algebraic terms and expressions (ACMNA177)

LESSON STRUCTURE:
Time 5 min Introduction (Set): Briefly talk about our link to India, mention the important contributions made to mathematics by Indian scientists and mathematicians Algebra linked with History (zero, positive and negative numbers development of rules) 499AD: the Hindu mathematician Aryabhata writes the "Aryabhatiya", the first book on Algebra (other information on a separate sheet) historical context. Teaching Approaches Introduce the topic to students Students need to make good choices about who they work with in groups ESL and lower literacy level students should be supported by a more able group members and or teacher (scaffolding) Teaching Approaches quite private learning no collaboration explicit teaching and worked example questioning the class. Ensure all students are able to contribute. Move around the class and monitor progress. Notice students doing the right thing. Support students where necessary and maintain quite environment and class management.
