Classroom Rules

I am looking forward to a fantastic school year with my 1st grade class at State Street Elementary! In my class we will be learning a lot and we will have fun doing it! I have been teaching for 6 years. I graduated from Penn State with dual certification in Early Childhood Education and Elementary Education. I also received a minor in dance. I did my student teaching in 1st grade in the Quaker Valley School District. I taught 3rd grade in Florida for 2 years and I taught Pre-Kindergarten at Highland Elementary for 3 years. I just graduated with my Masters of Education in Instructional Systems-Educational

In addition to using www.edline.net I also use an educational social media website called www.edmodo.com. Please see the attached page with your childs log in information. 3 Fingers: I need help! 4 Fingers: I have a question 5 Fingers: I want to answer a question Folders: Students have been provided 4 color coded folders to help stay organized. I have laminated these folders so they will last all year. Please encourage your child to take special care of their folders. Take Home FolderOrange (Please check nightly) Under Construction Folder- Yellow (Kept at school for work that needs to be completed). Intervention Folder-Blue Friday FolderGreen (Please check and sign every Friday and return to school on Monday).

Noise-O-Meter: The Noise-O-Meter will help student gauge what their voices should sound like. For example, while we are playing a game they should use their inside voice. When they are completing seatwork, students should use a whisper voice. During a test there should be no voices.

Pencils: In order to eliminate the distraction of sharpening pencils during the day, we will have two pencil cups. When a student needs a new pencil, they will place their pencil in the broken cup and take one from the sharp cup.

Hand Signals: 1 Finger: I need to use the restroom 2 Fingers: I need to get out of my seat to get a new pencil or get a drink.

Homework & Tests


Reading: Students will bring home decodable books. Please have your child read the book to you, another adult, or sibling, and then sign the book. The next day I will check it by placing a star on the cover. Students will receive 1 point per book read. Once it has been check by me you may keep the book at home. We will start the Book It program in October. Students will receive a reading calendar each month. We ask that the read 15 times during the month for 10 minutes. On nights they read to someone at home, they can color in that day on the calendar. I ask that parents also initial each day read. The reading calendars will be collected on the first day of the next month. Students will receive 15 points toward their reading grade for completing their reading calendar and a Book It coupon for a free personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut.

We will also be starting the Accelerated Reading Program later in the year. Students AR log will be on the opposite side of their reading calendar. Please record any library books your child has read, and I will try to find time for them to take AR quizzes during school. Students will accumulate AR points which can be redeemed in the AR store. Students will take weekly reading tests. They will take a test on their story for the week at the end of each week. They will also be quizzed on their high frequency words. Students will also be tested on their Oral Reading Fluency, where they are asked to read aloud for 1 minute. Students will also take larger tests at the end of each unit. Math: Students will bring home a worksheet associated with that days math lesson. The next day I will place a check plu on it so you know that I have seen it and credited your student with 1 point in the

gradebook. We will review the answers together as a class. Students will take math quizzes and chapters tests in math. Spelling: Students will receive a new spelling list at the beginning of each week. Each week students will receive a spelling packet. The will write their spelling list on the front, then students will be required to select a complete 3 activities each week from the spelling tictac-toe board. Students will receive 1 point per completed activity. Spelling tests will be given on Fridays.

Birthdays

Scholastic Book Clubs

If you wish to send a treat for your childs birthday, please let me know before that day. Currently, we have 27 students in our class. Also, if your child wishes to invite students to their birthday party, they must invite everyone in the class in order to be permitted to pass out invitations at school.

I will send home Scholastic Book Club flyers each month. If you are interested in ordering you may do so by ordering online, or by sending your order to school with a check (They do not accept cash). Please see the attached letter for more information.
