What is a Central Office Code?

Within every telephone number there is a Central Office (CO) code. The CO codes are assigned by the Authority to mobile and fixed line telephone services providers who use these codes in the assignment of telephone numbers to subscribers using a pre-defined format. For example, the Authoritys fixed line telephone number is the following: 1 868 675 8288

CO code The CO code within this telephone number is 675. The CO code is followed by four numbers, ranging from 0001 to 9999, for example, 675 8288. There is one CO code for every 10,000 telephone numbers. Thus the 675 CO code can be assigned to 10,000 fixed line telephone subscribers in Trinidad and Tobago. CO codes for fixed telephone service are traditionally based on the geographic location of the subscriber. CO codes for mobile telephone services are used differently as they are not confined to specific geographical locations within the country.
