Design of plate girder Step1: Calculate Max.BM(M) and SF(V). Step2: Obtain web and flange proportions.

For thick web assume k<67; thin web assume k>67 For web, optimum depth, d=(Mk/fy)0.33 optimum thickness, tw=(M/fyk2)0.33 Check: 8.6.1.1 and 8.6.1.2 For flange, flange width, bf= 0.3 We need plastic section, hence: b/tf <8.4 Substitute for b in above and get flange thickness tf Step3: Check Moment capacity of flange: Assume flange alone carries BM. 8.2.1.2: Md= b Zp fy/m0 Where, plastic section modulus of flange is; Zp= 2bf tf (D-tf)/2 Check: Md > M Step4: Shear capacity of web: Simple post critical method (8.4.2.2(a)) Assume c/d; c=spacing between stiffeners, d=web depth End panel is the most critical panel for maximum shear stress; Hence check to be done for end panel. Check: 8.6.1.1 and 8.6.1.2 Calculate average shear stress, qv= V/bftf Calculate Vn= Vcr= Av b (Refer code for equations) Check: Vn > V Step5: Check for shear capacity of end panel (8.5.1) Design end panel considering that no tension field action occurs. End panel with stiffener should be checked as a beam spanning between the flanges to resist shear force Rtf and moment Mtf Calculate Rtf using equations under 8.5.3 Calculate shear resistance of end panel Vn= tw d fyw / m0

Check: Vn > Rtf Step6: Check for moment capacity of end panel (8.5.1) Calculate Mtf using equations under 8.5.3 Calculate Mq= I fy/ y m0 where ,I = tw c3 /12 Check: Mtf <Mq, if so then end panel is capable of carrying the BM due to anchor forces. Step7: Design of stiffeners Load bearing stiffener at point A Force Fm due to Mtf = Mtf/c Total compression Fc = Reaction + Fm According to clause 8.7.5.2, Area of stiffener Aq > (0.8*Fc*m0)/fyq (a)Check for outstand bs: clause 8.7.1.2 : 14tq < bs<20 tq (b)Buckling check (8.7.1.5) (c)Check Stiffener as load bearing stiffener : clause 8.7.4 Local capacity of the web, Fw= (b1+n2)tw fyw / m0 Bearing stiffener has to be designed to take a load equal to: Fc Fw Bearing capacity of the stiffener alone = Area of stiffener * fy/ m0, where area of stiffener is bs provided multiplied by thickness of stiffener multiplied by the number of stiffener provided at one section. Check : Bearing capacity of stiffener > Facctored point load.
