In order to calculate the loads which will be applied to the bearings in the simply supported spur gear pass arrangement shown on the facing pages, it is first necessary to calculate the forces at the gear mesh. The tangential force at the gear mesh can be calculated from the following equation, Wt = T/r where and T = Torque r = Radius
and the separating force at the gear mesh can be calculated from, Wr' = Wt tant where
t = transverse pressure angle = normal pressure angle for spur gears = 20O for our standard gears
(for 20O pressure angle spur gears)
i.e.
Wr' = 0.364 Wt
If required, the total radial load at the gear mesh can be calculated from the final equation, Wr = (Wt)2+(Wr')2 Bearing loads Forces at these positions Position Tangential force Separating force Total radial load

For bearing life calculations based on these radial loads see page 16 in the technical section. Note - These equations can only be used for spur gear calculations, because they are not affected by self-generated axial forces.
