Kenyetta Walston I located my books from Barnes and Nobles.

All these book have two main things in common all are talking about oppression and the fight to freedom. Some in freedom of rights and other freedom in ownership. All characters in these books have a obstacle that they are trying to overcome and by the ends of the books they have concord and overcome in achieving there man goal a better life and future. First book is Henrys Freedom Box which is a true story from the underground railroad about a boy in slavery thats a hard worker, doesnt know his birthday because slaves werent allowed to know their birthday. Hes sold and loses his family and decides it time to be free and mails his self to freedom in a box earning the name Henry box brown and finally gives himself a birthday March 30, 1849! His first day of freedom (Grade level second).

The books I Used to connect with it were Rosa by Nikki Giovanni, has pretty illustrations and is a tribute to Rosa Parks and her big part in civil right movement. The courage in refusing to give up her seat to a White person and its lead to help the movement (Grade level forth).

Moses: When Harriet Tubman Led Her people to Freedom by Carole Weatherford. Its a lyrical text ,very poetic, biography about when Harriet Tubman led her people to freedom. Tells of Harriet spiritual dedication to the man above. How she bravely escaped and made it her own mission to return and help other slaves to freedom through the underground railroad. Helping many families as well as her own to freedom. (Grade level fourth)

Freedom on the Menu by Carole Weatherford. A story that told from the view point of a little girl during desegregation. Connie is living in the south during a time when blacks couldnt eat, drink, swim, and use the same bathrooms as whites. After hearing a sermon by Martin Luther King inspired Connies siblings to start a sit in at a lunch counter that refused them service. (second grade)
