HISTORY
Habib Bank Limited started its commercial operation from Bombay on August 25, 1941 with a Fixed capital of 25,000 rupees. The four Brothers formed Habib Bank namely Ahmed Habib, Dawood Habib, Muhammad Ali Habib and Ghulam Ali Habib. The Bank had only Rs 1.03 crore by way of advances and invested Rs. 12 lakhs in government securities. After the creation of Pakistan, Quaid-e-Azam, Muhammed Ali Jinnah, impressed by its initial performance asked the Bank to move its operations to Karachi. Quaid-e-Azam on December 29, 1945 opened a current account with HBL. He also opened an account with Habib Bank Limited in the name of Muslim League Bihar relief fund. Habib bank survived its most crucial stage from 1941 to 1947 and has overcome numerous challenges. After independence and the shifting of Headquarter from Bombay to Karachi it faced much opposition and new responsibilities which were handled superbly by the bank. Efforts were made to increase the standards of service to the people, increasing banking hours and improving the physical appearances of the branches making it popular amongst the people. Habib Bank was the first to recruit and train Muslims in the banking profession. The first banking Training scheme was started by the bank in 1946. There are two parties in lease financing Lessor (The bank) and Lessee (the customer). Lessor should purchase the fixed asset (Plant and machinery) and shall retain its ownership. The lessor should give possession of the asset to the lessee for use. The lessee pays a rent of the asset for a specified period. The leasing banks are generally less concerned about financial account of the lessee. HIRE PURCHASE (BAI-SALAM) Under this finance banks cater to the fixed investment needs of various sectors. The assets are purchased on joint ownership basis. Repayment includes a part of the principal and a share of profit earned from the assets. It is so adjusted that at the end of the agreement the amount of finance and share of profit is fully amortized. Mode of repayment is monthly installment. In case of default banks can take possession of the asset.

Technology not up to date Up gradation of technology in all branches not yet complete A number of branches still have to be refurbished / upgraded, or automated, as these are not up to the standard.

69

Government Interventions Undue government intervention in shaping the administrative policies of the bank due to being a public sector entity. High Ratio of non-performing loans Historically high ratio of non-performing loans. This ratio has been managed down due to balance sheet growth. In addition, these loans have now been adequately provided. Low rate of interests HBL Bank has low rate of interests on Pls as compare to the other banks but they have some good rate of interest in their products like value a/c but its rates are also not too good as compare to the other banks. Charges of cheque book The other reason that many times there is conflict of the Bank customers have those they why they have to pay to the bank. Customers are on right because many of the banks are not charging for cheque book. Transaction charges The other weakness of the HBL Bank that they have charging the transaction charges at first the State Bank have start but after a few months State Bank stop that but HBL Bank still have that in their profit and loss account that they charge transaction charges. Increment in employees salaries The other main weakness of the Bank is that they are not increment their employees salary according to the world labor organization that is 10 % every year but in Bank such thing is not happens according to that rule. Late Promotions The other thing that for the employees point of view the weakness is the Bank is that they are to promote their employees even they have a time of promotion but they are not promoted that is also not fair with the employees.

Large international network which principally focuses on trade finance with Pakistan can be utilized to tap trade activities in other markets. In addition, services such as cross border / offshore financing for corporate customers can be enhanced. Benefits of recent expenditure on technology and branch upgrades soon to start flowing. Increasing regulatory support for universal banking activities. Stability in Afghanistan leading to increased banking opportunities in Pakistan, Afghanistan and in Central Asia. Further reduction in intermediation costs possible, with improving technology. Possibility of transferring non performing assets

THREATS
Following are the threats faced by the HBL these are almost the same threat, which is faced by the other bank also because the threat is the micro factor, and it is not in the hands of the organization its the environmental factor. Competitors HBL have the threat from their competitors in their main competitors are Standard chartered, ABN Amro, Muslim Commercial Bank etc. because to compete each other they have to launch the different products and different things to attract their customers. 71

Government policies The main thing that is the threat for the HBL is that is the government policies that in the political situation like our country no one does not know that what going to be happen in future not future perception. Same as the government that no one knows that what type of policies they have in future so this is the biggest threat for every industry. Concentration risk Concentration risk is high as major exposure is towards the textile sector and government, as is the case with most of the Nationalized Commercial Banks Consolidation Consolidation in the banking sector resulting in increased competition.
