Description

The Times' Chief Football Correspondent Oliver Kay joins Harry Robinson in a special edition of the Manchester United Weekly Podcast.

Predominantly, they discuss Oli's new book, Forever Young. It is the story of Adrian Doherty, once regarded as "the new George Best" and "better than Ryan Giggs". In one of football's tragic stories, "the lost genius" was forced out of the game by a cruciate knee ligament injury.

He left football entirely as his former friends, the Class of '92, were lifting Cup after Cup and League after League trophy. In June 2000, having moved to the Hague, Doherty slipped into a river and never woke again.

His story is a sad one, but as Oliver Kay is keen to remind us, Doherty was a unique individual and while it is a sad story, it is fascinating.

After discussing the book, they briefly discuss Manchester United and how the club also now fit "the lost genius" tag, although in a different way to Doherty.

Forever Young, by Quercus Books, is released on May 19th. acast.com/privacy
