Thank you so much for your friendship, Cheryl.
This one is for you.
PrologueAS CHERYL PLACES THE BABY down peacefully sleeping in his crib, she looks at his blonde curly hair, his chubby cheeks. Even though his eyes are closed, she knows when they open, she will see the bluest of blue eyes. He is her heart. Once she is sure he is asleep, she walks to the dresser, turning on the baby monitor. One last look at the crib, closing the door behind her, Cheryl heads down the hallway towards her room.
She has been thinking about a nice hot bath all day. Upon entering her room, Cheryl checks the volume on the monitor on her dresser. Looking around, she sees clothes on top of the bed needing to be folded, another load of laundry that needs to be started, but one glance at the bathroom and seeing the tub nothing else matters at this time. Stepping over clothes, Cheryl makes her way to her sanctuary.
Walking to the oversized jetted tub, she turns the silver knobs which will give her body and mind some much-needed relaxation. Opening a glass jar, she brings it up to her nose and takes a deep breath of her favorite fragrance, Lilac. All the stress of the day seems to melt away. Tilting the jar towards the water, she is mesmerized watching the lavender crystals mix with the hot water and turning her bathroom into a spa. As the lilac fragrance gets stronger, she slips out of her trance realizing she is still pouring in the bath salts. Quickly, she tips the jar upright, closing the lid.
Turning off the water, she is eager to soak the day away. The hot water is a balm to her soul. The steam from the water carries the lilac fragrance with every move as she settles into the tub. Cheryl is debating about turning on the jets to sooth her achy body, unsure if the noise will wake up Jax or if she will hear him through the monitor. Figuring a few moments on couldn’t hurt anything, she relaxes into the tub.
***The steam is gone, the smell of lilac has dissipated and a chill in the air has water splashing onto the floor with the shivering her body was doing. Jolting up, Cheryl realizing she fell asleep in the tub. Hurrying to get out of the tub without falling, she grabs her plush robe to put it on so she can go check on Jax.
Rushing out of her room, she trips on a pile of clothes and stumbles into the hallway. Opening the door to the bedroom, she runs to the crib and looks in on Jax. A soul piercing scream is coming out of Cheryl. Bending down to pick up Jax, with tears streaming down her face, she walks to the rocking chair. Shhh…it’s gonna be alright, momma’s got you,
Cheryl repeats as she’s rocking Jaxs’ lifeless body.
SIX MONTHS. HOW CAN IT already be six months? Romy is pondering how time has flown by since she made the transfer from the D.C. location to Savannah, GA. Agent Dikeman and a few others are meeting her at Joe’s Crab Shack on Bay Street for a little impromptu party for her, sort of a late welcome to Savannah. Since the transfer, things have been a little crazy dealing with her uncles’ case, which she isn’t technically handling, but she is helping out where she can. Other than that, she is busy with visiting her father, Chase. Trying to get to know him during his stay in prison was hard. He recently got out, thanks to Agent Dikeman-Mike, and her old boss, Stan, but hasn’t been able to see him yet. The letter found at the house, did help go a long way with getting things moving a bit faster.
Romy enjoys working with this new team. She met them while they were in Jesup, arresting the Sheriff. Not one of them gave her questioning looks about how she came across the information for the case. There was no whispering behind her back. It was as if the news that she was an empath didn’t bother them. She was just another agent that did a job well done figuring out a bad situation. Without all the stress from her new coworkers, she was able to deal with all her emotional grief and heartache without worry. It made coming to terms with the situation that much easier, and also made the transfer so much smoother for her.
Just making it back into town, Romy realizing she’s going to be late, pulls out her phone.
Agent Dikeman, how can I help you?
Mike, it’s Griffin. I just got back and running late. I should be there in ten.
Romy, relax. I just got here myself and not everyone has shown up yet. So, how was the drive back? Any problems I need to know?
The drive back was uneventful. The case is to bed now, so I don’t think I’ll have to go back up to D.C. for anything other than personal reasons.
Sounds good. See ya when you get here.
Throwing her phone and bag onto the bed, she went into the bathroom for a quick shower to wash the drive away. Still in a hotel due to the traveling back and forth from here to D.C., there hasn’t been time to find a place to call hers. She’s hoping that tonight she
