    Verum Et Inventa

    DARK FICTION BY RAYMOND TOWERS

This is a magazine of dark fiction, mostly, in the genres of fantasy, horror and science fiction. Primarily, I am here to promote my fiction writing, but I am also looking forward to including submitted material from other writers with similar styles or non-traditional ideas, as well as contributions from reviewers, commentators and, hopefully, one day, even fans. In addition, and following what you might be familiar with from print digest-type magazines, I will also include articles based on my personal research, or the research of others, many of which will be controversial and difficult to absorb for the normies. Honestly, there are plenty of other outlets out there that pull their punches or whitewash what is true and promote what is fabrication. Verum Et Inventa is Latin for Truth And Fables, or Truth And Fiction, if you will. If you’ve come to read an adventure, I will give you one. If, after that, you want to read an article that might cause you to see things in a different way than before, I’m aiming to provide that as well.

"He who denies the daemons breaks the chain that unites the world to God." - Plutarch, De Defectu Oraculorum

From the New Oxford American Dictionary:

Daemon 1 - (in ancient Greek belief) A divinity or supernatural being of a nature between gods and humans. An inner or attendant spirit or inspiring force.

Daemon 2 - A background (computer) process that handles requests for services such as print spooling and file transfers, and is dormant when not required.

"Think of the power to mesmerize. In the old days, mediums and witches used crystal balls and scrying mirrors, respectively. During my research, I’ve come across many hints that the telephone, the radio, the television and the computer were first created with the intention of speaking to spirits from the other side. It is called television programming for a reason, as it is meant to program you.

Taking that one step further, we find that the ancient Greeks knew what daemons were and how they operated. It was only later when contrived Roman Catholicism muddied up the waters that ‘daemons’ became ‘demons’ as we know them today. Our movie theaters, computer monitors, television screens and smart phones have become the new scrying mirrors. Look at how they mesmerize us today, without us even realizing it.

And who has decided that they should put themselves between God and Man, but our modern day clergy in the three major, corrupt world religions of Christianity, Islam and Judaism. According to the self-appointed and self-serving clergy, God can only speak through them because they are special, holier than the rest of us. Only they can interpret the words of God like the Catholic priests once translated the unquestionable dictates of obedience from Latin. Who, I ask you, is the true daemon / demon we should be worried about?" - Raymond Towers

    Editorial

Welcome, readers, to another issue of Verum Et Inventa.

In this issue you will find the continuation of the modern fantasy novella Snatched Up! Also from the Variant Worlds 1collection are several shorts including:

The Book Changes Hands - a flash fiction piece that serves as the intro for the collection

Gazing At Stars - a slow-paced, introspective short story

A Crossroads Of Shorts - a subdued short about a modern man gifted with supernatural abilities

Bastardlope Safari - a short story about big game hunting gone to a technologically wild level

Next up, we have a couple of excerpts from my medieval fantasy series Tales From The Savage Lands. These come from Book 6, which I released in June of 2019. The first piece, titled Akanah Dodenliff And How It All Began, is my initial attempt to tie in the content of the first five books, as they go in all sorts of directions and cover a period of more than a thousand years. An excerpt follows this, from the novella The Knights Of The Red Lady. Characters introduced separately in previous books, namely Cerny, the Red Lady, the knight Herri and Sir Hoppe, end up working together for the common good and against both natural and supernatural adversaries.

My Story Starter for this month deals with daemons and the technological nightmare that our world could become, as sort of a worst case scenario, if people don’t wake up and smell the Chemtrails / GMOs / Vaccines / you name it, because we are under attack from all possible venues at the moment.

Moving on to the Articles section. I have several of them this time around. My Recommendations For Writers is a continuation of the candid and personal articles from issues 1 through 4. Fantasy Cowboy Names is a brief listing of names from Fantasy Names Generators, a site I use regularly. For non-fiction, I have two entries. One is a written version of Zechariah Sitchin’s Anunnaki Timeline, as presented by Youtube channel Ancient Astronaut Archive. Following those are the first two articles from a series of nine, where I researched well over 200 pages on Biblioteca Pleiades, on the subject of strange occurrences on Luna, from ever since we first became aware of a moon orbiting our planet. The series is titled Before The Moon existed. Additional articles on this enigmatic subject will follow in future issues of this magazine.

That’s all I’ve got. Enjoy the mag, and if you see fit to do so, have a look at my books and consider making a purchase. Thanks!

    Snatched Up!

    4

A few short hours later, Jesse felt the bright glare of a flashlight beating at his eyelids. Also, there was a persistent tugging on his shirtfront.

    Wake up.

It was a woman’s voice, but he couldn’t quite place it.

    Jesse, get up.

    Janey’s voice.

Jesse reached out to push away at the offensive glare. I’m up. As he sat up, he felt his body groaning from the previous night’s exertion. Or was it still night? It was so hard to tell with no lights on. Some kind of emergency?

    Yes.

Jesse bolted to his feet, forcing his aches and scratches onto the back burner. He was ready for immediate action. What’s going on? Somebody hurt?

    I have to pee.

    What?

I have to pee! Janey said, some urgency in her whispered voice.

The words sunk in. It took some effort for Jesse to control his irritation. Okay.

Janey turned, pointing the flashlight at the training room door. Come on.

Even in the near darkness, he could see that everybody else was still asleep. Shaking his head, Jesse followed her out.

Florie was sitting on a chair just outside the door, smoking yet another in a seemingly endless supply of cigarettes. You finally managed to wake him up, huh?

Janey nodded and trotted down the stairs.

Jesse followed, but at a much slower pace. You know, I was having a dream about you.

Janey stopped before the emergency exit close to the base of the stairs. She had at least one of her hatchets in her possession, Jesse noticed, and she was eyeing him warily.

I dreamed that I was strangling you for waking me up. Jesse finished.

In a rare instance, the usually solemn Janey snickered. It didn’t last long, however. A second later the lean young woman turned and shoved open the emergency exit. She was all business as she propped the door open with her foot, scanning the immediate area with her light beam, and tensing her arm for a quick strike.

I forgot my flashlight. Jesse admitted.

    You won’t need it.

Well, I forgot my weapon. Jesse started looking around, until Janey clarified things to an infinite degree by pointing her flashlight at the nearby weapon cart.

This time, Jesse chose the chopper scraper. Normally, the tool was used to scrape ice off of sidewalks and driveways, but its end also had a blunt edge that could be used to chop down on stubborn clumps of ice. Since it never got cold enough for ice to form on sidewalks in that warm corner of southern California, you might be wondering why such items were at the Do It Yourself Warehouse in the first place. Well, it turns out that they’d arrived as part of a mislabeled shipment. The manufacturer had chosen to eat the cost, instead of paying to have the tools returned only so they could be reshipped elsewhere.

Mainly a defensive instrument, the chopper scraper wouldn’t receive high marks for being a finishing weapon. On the other hand, it would give a good hard poke to its first adversary, and be versatile enough to be used on a second or third in a quick time frame. Unlike Janey’s previously witnessed strike with the long handled axe, Jesse knew that his weapon wouldn’t be left impaled on the first bat that crossed their paths.

Janey watched his approach. You know you can sharpen that thing.

Sure, I’ll get right on it. Once I get the rest of my sleep.

The normal procedure was for a sentry to keep the door propped open, while people went a short distance away and relieved themselves.

Janey handed her flashlight over. You keep this pointed up towards your face. If I see the beam veer off in any other direction, I’m throwing my hatchet at you. You got it?

Jesse couldn’t tell if she was kidding or not. Why didn’t you tell Sanders to keep an eye out? I thought the two of you were buddies.

Just because we’re both in receiving doesn’t mean we’re buddies. Janey countered. Anyway, Sanders is a pervert. He’s been trying to get into my panties ever since I transferred into his department. He keeps telling me how fat his wife is, and how she doesn’t take care of him. Like one day I’ll look at him and say ‘Okay, let’s have sex then.’ So no, I wouldn’t consider us buddies. Her voice had been retreating into the dark. Jesse guessed her to be some twenty feet away by then. Put the light up to your face, and remember what I said.

If complying meant they’d get back inside sooner, Jesse was all for it. He held the flashlight right up to his chin, imagining himself as some medieval gargoyle out to ward off evil spirits, or in this case, bats the size of basketball players. Attentively, he listened for the sound of flapping wings, the first indicator of an impending attack, all the while staring up at the pitch-black sky.

Except, the sky didn’t look as pitch black as before. Unless his eyes were deceiving him, he swore he could see a slight lightening in the obscurity. Not exactly as if the morning sun were rising, but… You done yet?

I’m not going to answer that. Janey replied.

No stars in the sky, no evident sunrise, but a definite lightening. What could that mean? He heard approaching crunching sounds from Janey’s sneakers and lowered his flashlight. Hey, how can we get on the roof?

Ladder on the back of the building. Why?

Look at the sky. It’s still black, but it doesn’t look pitch black like before.

It’s almost morning, right? You’re saying it shouldn’t look that way?

Think about that for a moment. We’re not in a rundown neighborhood in Southeast San Diego anymore. We might be clear on the other side of the planet, or in some other dimension that we don’t know anything about. We can’t expect the sun to be rising at the same time, from the same direction, right?

    What are you saying?

I don’t know. Maybe this place has no sun, at least not like we know it. Maybe this is as light as it gets. We have to go somewhere a little higher, where we can see the entire sky.

Like the top of the store, you mean?

Yeah. Jesse figured she’d refuse, as she didn’t seem to be too team-friendly.

Let me grab a couple more things. Janey took her flashlight from his hands, before she walked back inside and went directly toward the weapon cart. When she returned, she was adjusting a multi-pocket tool belt on her waist. Said belt was outfitted with her two hatchets secured in the hammer loops, a folding box cutter with a six inch blade, a couple of small cans of pepper spray and form-fitting latex gloves. Once she finished tying her belt on, she retrieved her trademark long-handled axe from where it rested against the wall.

    You come prepared.

You ever heard of a damsel in distress? Well, that’s not me. Janey replied, as she placed the flashlight and axe in Jesse’s hands, and ducked down to grab something from beside the door. It was a helmet with a light mounted on top, for people that worked in dark places like miners. Expertly, she tied the chinstrap on.

Wow. Jesse was impressed. If you get some gear like that for me, I’ll be your love monkey until we get back home.

You’re not my type. Janey nonchalantly walked out the door.

    Where are you going?

To the roof, like you said.

You mean just the two of us? Jesse was shocked. "We’ve got
