Chapter 1
Can Any Good Come out of Lima, Ohio?
Stanley Tam twirled the piece of straw between his fingers and stuck it in his mouth. Look at the stars tonight,
he said to his best friend George as he pointed to one particularly bright star. I want to be like that when I grow up. I want to be someone who stands out more than the others. I’m going to make lots of money, and we will never be poor and unhappy again. And you know I much prefer to be with you than at home, listening to Mom and Dad yell at each other.
Stan nudged his good buddy.
George grunted. He was the best pet pig a boy could have. Good night, George,
Stan mumbled as he rolled over in the straw. Maybe when we wake up in the morning, we’ll be as rich as kings.
Stanley’s great-grandfather woke up rich one morning. Well, almost. He knew how to make lots of money. In 1849, Great-Grandfather McBeth, who was Stanley’s mother’s grandfather, traveled from Scotland to California to pan for gold. He found so much gold that he became a banker.
Grandfather Tam, Stanley’s father’s father, wasn’t good at earning money, but he was clever at magicians’ tricks. Stan knew the old magician’s trunk sat in the corner of the attic. Sometimes he and his sister would ask their father if they could play with the rings and gadgets in the trunk. His father taught them how to pull a coin from behind their ear or from their sleeve. If only Stan could wave the magic wand now and make money appear out of nowhere.
Though Stanley’s dad and grandpa had lots of fun, magician shows didn’t pay for the bread and butter the family needed each day. So the men thought they would try making money with movies. They moved from Ohio to California and bought several movie theaters in Mississippi and California, which was where Stanley was born on September 15, 1915.
Stanley wasn’t always named Stanley. Just after his birth, his parents had an argument about what they should name their first boy.
Baby’s name?
the doctor asked as he began to fill out the birth certificate.
Stanley,
Mrs. Tam said.
Stanley!
his father said. I thought we decided on Stanford.
No,
she replied. You wanted Stanford, but I wanted Stanley.
The doctor couldn’t believe that the new parents were fighting. Usually the birth of a baby is a happy time!
So, what’s it to be?
he butted in, trying to be patient.
Quick with her words, Stanley’s mother said in a half-joking and half-frustrated way, Call him John Doe.
Stanley’s father stared at her with his mouth half open. He couldn’t believe that his son would live with a name that suggested he was plain and average. He wanted more for his boy. Mr. Tam may not have been able to offer much financially to his child, but he wanted his son to have a better life than he had had.
The couple took their baby John Doe home. Two weeks later, Stanley’s father went downtown to the city courthouse and paid five dollars, which was a lot of money back then, to have the name changed to Russell Stanley Tam.
Living in California, far from their roots in Ohio, the Tams had to make a choice. Now that they had started a family, they needed a stable income. As much as they tried to make good money from the theaters, the money wasn’t coming in so well. When Stanley was nine, his family sold the movie theater business in California. Then the young family and Stanley’s grandfather all moved back to Lima, Ohio, where they bought a farm, hoping to make a decent living as farmers.
Stanley had two sisters. Evelyn was older, and Mildred, who was also called Midge, was younger. He thought his sisters were okay, especially when they played baseball and tag together. But they were particularly useful when it came to making peanut butter sandwiches topped with lots of honey. Every boy needed a sister who could help where food was concerned.
Lima, Ohio, was less than 100 miles away from Dayton. In that town, the
