    Introduction—The Meaning of History

I want to thank you and commend you for downloading the book, Forgotten History: Captivating History Events that Have Been Forgotten.

History is divided into two key areas—that period before writing, frequently called prehistory, and written history.

We cannot dismiss prehistory, simply because written documentation did not exist. Written documentation has not always been thorough or truthful, either. And prehistory contains many great pieces of evidence—artifacts, stone, sediments, bones and more. All of these tell a story.

The details of history come to us in many forms. We will explore a few of them in this short book.

An Awareness of the Forces of History

My world history teacher in high school made me critically aware of the most important element in history—motivation. The reason for a nation’s actions are at the foundation of history. They don’t teach this on television’s history channel. We miss a lot because each source attempts to package history to suit their own needs. This remains a frailty of every author. Bias of some kind remains inescapable. That is why I recommend reading from many sources. Take in many points-of-view in order to gain a broader perspective. Even if some of what you read is nonsense, it can be valuable to see how others view the world, or want us to see the world. Some authors even lie, and we must be prepared for this possibility.

As individuals, we must always be ready to form our own, individual viewpoints and never to depend solely on others. We must learn to think for ourselves in the spirit of the old educators of the nineteenth century and earlier. They taught the classics and the rigorous logic of Aristotle and the other Greeks. We must let go of the laziness which leads us to accept history in prepackaged sound bites and easy-to-swallow memes.

This book contains a variety of historical events covering a span from the second millennium BC through to our current day, where the seeds of tomorrow’s history are being planted. Within this book is a record of events once forgotten or previously unknown that have helped shape history and the world we live in today.

History holds the key to understanding the present. Our past explains where we have come from and where we are heading. Although humanity can determine the steps it will take in the future, history often shows us the cycles that humanity repeats. A wise student will see these cycles and learn from them in order to better shape the future. We also must learn the elements of human motivation. There are those who already use this knowledge to manipulate the events of our world toward their own selfish ends. If we don’t like where they are taking us, we need to learn enough of history’s lessons to wrest that control from them, and to determine our own path into the future.

How can we know our history and what shapes us if we have forgotten great historical events and occurrences? To fully understand where we come from, and what we have achieved—both great and devastating—we need a more holistic history book.

This book attempts to fill in some of those blanks. The historical events listed in this book are not all that have been forgotten or overlooked in modern history lessons, but it is one step closer to fitting the missing puzzle pieces into our already grand worldview.

    Chapter 1: Valsequillo, Mexico

In our study of history, we need to remain vitally aware that historians can sometimes be wrong. Everyone has their own set of prejudices. Many conquerors rewrote history to make themselves look good to posterity. Even today, scientists have been known to ignore evidence which was too controversial. How can truth ever be found if the evidence for it is ignored?

One critical example of this problem involves a bit of unwritten human history located in Valsequillo, Mexico. In the 1960s, human artifacts were found there which were later dated to 250,000 years ago. Several methods were used to determine the ages of these artifacts. The archaeologist in charge of the original dig decided not to publish, because the date was too unbelievable. It upset the apple cart of then current scientific dogma,
