Introduction
Grade school. Nine years. Approximately 1,600 school days. This is where, and how long, your children will spend a sizeable amount of their childhood. Yes, during that time, they will advance through a sequence of designated levels--primary, intermediate and junior high/middle school. But it’s still all grade school, generally considered kindergarten through eighth grade. Their nearly decade-long participation in the multiplicities of academic and social experiences is not just a pathway to high school, but a vital, transformative contributor to their future educational and lifetime endeavors. And I am not exaggerating.
During my career, I found it striking the high degree of trust and confidence parents had about their children’s school even though most of them possessed only cursory knowledge pertaining to that child-centered institution. After all, grade school is a truly comprehensive entity involving numerous interconnected components: personnel, programs, buildings, finance, law, community, government, and most importantly, children and their peer relationships. By gaining an understanding of how these co-dependent factors contribute to making a top-notch grade school, parents can be fundamentally prepared to travel along with their children throughout the years-long journey.
This is a parent’s guidebook—a map, if you will—to: (1) Identify in plain-spoken terms, not educational jargon, essential program and operation elements; and (2) Capably navigate, rather than be overwhelmed by, the labyrinth of student-focused grade school academic and social experiences. My intention, and hope, is this handbook will pinpoint specific issues that have real-world implications on students, their parents, and even the community.
All children should have the opportunity to take part in a grade school program that respects and addresses their individuality. The following information is not based on pie-in-the-sky dreams and wishes, but on I’ve been there, seen it, and done it
reality. With the appropriate personnel, resources and programs all students can participate in nine years of affirmative, life-shaping experiences.
For your daughters and sons, every day of grade school attendance is a significant day. It is a potentially momentous opportunity to develop problem-solving, critical thinking, decision-making, and cognitive and affective life skills. As a parent, you expect the day-to-day academic and social happenings to coincide with your children’s needs and strengths. You desire more than verbal assurances that your expectations are competently addressed and met. You want both transparency and accountability based on rock-solid, verifiable confirmations.
In today’s technological world, schools have access to an innumerable quantity of student-centered, instructional materials designed to complement the classroom teachers. The primary element that distinguishes the educator superstars from the middle-of-the-road and humdrum teachers and administrators is their individual abilities as mixologists
to expertly identify and combine the student-appropriate academic content, resources and strategies to maximize optimal learning-teaching experiences. The following information will provide you with significant insights about how successful and productive grade schools function.
