Growing Wellness - Kelli D. Kemp MS

    Bibliography

    Introduction

People ascribe the greatest healing power to drugs that have come from farthest away, drugs that cost the most. In my long experience I have come to believe that people go to the ends of the earth to look for something they could find right on their doorstep. If only we could learn to trust nature.

    -Maurice Messegue, 1921

This book is the result of countless hours of research and personal experience to compile a detailed guide to the most useful, common, or most readily available medicinal plants that promote overall wellness or are effective for minor ailments. The information contained herein is from a variety of sources from herbal medicine textbooks, academic journals, and credible websites to provide a comprehensive profile on each plant. Each entry is complete with the monograph information, proper dosing, recipes, and growing guides. Where available, I provide growing guides for both indoor and outdoor plants. However, for some plants there was not an indoor growing guide available because the plant is best grown outdoors, or the indoor growing guide was too extensive for the scope of this book (i.e. cannabis).

Promoting wellness is most often about prevention. However, many people frequently need to begin their wellness journey from the point of healing. While plants may be useful in treating both acute and chronic conditions, when being utilized from a healing perspective always consult with a trained healthcare provider. Western and alternative medicines, such as Traditional Chinese Medicine or acupuncture, can often be combined with great success.

    Aloe Vera

Latin name: Aloe Vera, Aloe barbadensis

    Family: Liliaceae

    DESCRIPTIVE CHARACTERISTICS

Native to Africa, Aloe has thick blue-green leaves which reach a length of 40-50 cm and grow upward in spikes from a rosette to a maximum of 100 cm. The leaves are greyish green and have serrated edges. Aloe is an exceptionally resilient plant which stores moisture and nutrients in the leaves to get through dry periods. The plant flowers in the summer.¹

    Part of the Plant Used

Transparent gel from pulp, dried inner latex lining of leaf

    TEXTURE

Soft yet firm, the skin is easily broken

The gel is slightly sticky at first but dries quickly

    COLOR

The light green leaves are edged with tiny yellow teeth, forming a dense rosette

    AROMA

    Unpleasant odor

    FLAVOR

    Bitter taste

    CONSTITUENTS

    •7-hydroxyaloin A and B

    •Aloin (25-49%)

    •Aloe-emodin

    •Chrysophanol

    •Tannins

    PRIMARY ACTIONS

Aloe is a potent laxative because of its content of anthraquinone derivative. Aloe-emodin is listed as the active component and is formed in the colon. The result is an irritation of the intestinal mucous membranes, an increase of mucous, secretions, and peristalsis stimulation. Reabsorption of electrolytes and water is also inhibited. Studies have shown Aloe Vera gel is effective in lowering triglyceride levels. Polysaccharides and glycoproteins are responsible for these effects.²

The gel has been shown to be an effective healer of burns and wounds. It can also hasten the rate of healing and reduce infection. Aloectin B is responsible for this action as it stimulates the immune system.³

    RESEARCH

Aloe Vera was a widely used folk remedy for burns and wounds, but how it worked was unclear. A 2018 study revealed Aloe Vera had measurable stimulatory effects on cell proliferation and migration of both fibroblasts and keratinocytes.

    IN THE GARDEN

Aloe will only grow outdoors in USDA Hardiness zones 8 to 11. The plant requires full sun for a minimum of six to eight hours and prefers poor soil that is loose and gritty. Aloe requires regular watering but are drought tolerant for short periods.

Cover the plant with a container for the occasional overnight freeze. Spread straw or mulch around the root base to protect the root zones for longer colder periods.

Aloe Vera is a good indoor plant. Indoor temperatures should stay above 41 degrees.

Cactus potting mix – 2 parts sand, 1 part potting soil. Repot each spring. Place in a sunny window.

    Be careful not to overharvest.
