    Chapter 1

THE WATER IS SPARKLING Dan, a beautiful woman in a bikini murmured seductively as she tugged at the drawstring of his shorts. Daniel felt a familiar desire rise within him. It was a desire to be human again. He wanted to be part of that playful ritual of splashing in the sunlight once more. His blue eyes locked to her lighter blue gaze and he considered it for a moment. Then slowly he shook his head.

No I had a late night last night, I think I'm going to sleep it off, he said and turned away from her.

Daniel Miller looks like your typical 19-year old, young adult male. Tall, fair, and extremely handsome, Daniel is the kind of young man that girls would fawn over. He was a reformed teenager, having grown out the usual troubles so many young people encounter. Aside from being the guy your mom would want you to invite over for dinner, Daniel also has the charismatic pull that only men in Harlequin romances can have.

But people don’t know his deep, dark secret - a secret that started a few years back when he first met Lily.

He could feel the heaviness of the bikini clad girls gaze stroking across his broad shoulders and the toned muscles of his back. He felt a longing again, only this time it was for Lily. He closed his eyes as he heard the door to the hotel room close behind the blonde bombshell that he could be frolicking with. His mind returned only to one woman Lily. He loathed her almost as deeply as he desired her.

Sullenly he walked across the room to the large floor-to-ceiling windows that faced the beach. The blinds were drawn, providing him only glimpses of the paradise that lay beyond. The sun was blazing on the thick glass. Daniel remembered what it was like to feel it warming his cheek, to see a blue sky unblemished by clouds or rain. He had once taken that amazing force, sunlight, for granted. He had squandered the hours he could spend in it, holed up in his room playing video games, or sleeping until two.

He didn't have much direction as a teenager. Now he longed for those hours back, or even for just a moment. He narrowed his eyes. He thought it was time. His plan to join his old friends on this trip had only amplified the truth in his mind that he had been trying to avoid. He was never going to be human again. So why exist?

He trailed his fingertip along the hot glass. He was determined to stand directly in front of the blazing sun and let his body burn. But the moment his fingertip began to sizzle he knew that he wasn't going to be able to do it. It hurt too badly. He drew his finger back and closed his eyes. He was too much of a coward to even die right. He slumped down in his bed and did his best to block out the world.

When he woke several hours later, he was greeted by the moonlight filtering through the blinds. He always felt better at night, as if he belonged to it. But then he had felt that way for years. When he was just starting high school he would wear nothing but black. He had a fascination with death, and rebellion. He wanted to break free from the mindless rhythm that he saw the people around him caught up in.

He laughed at his own ignorance as he pulled himself up out of the bed. He felt more energy, more alive at night. During the day, though he was never directly in the sunlight, it still felt as if it sapped him. Invigorated by the moonlight he dressed in a loose white t-shirt and a pair of jean shorts. He opened the door to his hotel room to find a long line of his friends heading to the elevator.

We're going down to the beach for a bonfire, Jacob said. Jacob, who had never even known his name when he was in high school, now talked to Daniel as if he mattered in some way.

I'll join you, Daniel said and pulled the door shut to his hotel room.

Stuck on the elevator, surrounded by beating hearts and the delicious scent of heated blood, Daniel had to close his eyes. He did his best to restrain himself. He knew that soon he would have to feed, or he might lose control. When he first met Lily, his mind was full of misconceptions about what a vampire was, and what a vampire could and could not do.

He learned that vampires could only drink blood from their own species, they could not feast on rodents, or even blood alternatives as some movies and books had depicted. Those were the movies and books that fascinated him when he was a young teen. To be a vampire, in his mind at the time, was to be a god.

Now he knew that to be a vampire was to clench every muscle in his body and bite down sharply on the tip of his tongue to prevent himself from devouring every drop of blood that was pumping through the veins of his friends. To say that being a vampire had lost some of its glamor, was understating matters.

The elevator reached the ground floor and they all filed off. Daniel headed for the beach along with the group. None of them really knew him. He had wiggled his way into the graduation trip. He had barely graduated himself. But one thing he had noticed about being a vampire, it seemed as if humans could sense the power, the dominance in him. They might not know why, but they found him more interesting, and wanted to be around him more often. If he had tried to join in on something like this while still being in high school as a human, he would have been laughed out of the classroom.

Hurry up Dan, Jacob called over his shoulder. I've got marshmallows! he danced across the sand like a complete fool.

Daniel laughed at the sight. It was good to be that carefree.
