Chapter One
THE BLARING ALARM OF Hunter's alarm clock jolted him from his slumber. He reached out and clicked off his alarm clock, then stretched a full body stretch. His room was dusky, which brought a smile of relief to his face.
Finally, now that he had some time off from work, he could get back into his nocturnal habits. He really had to see if he could find some kind of job that had a night shift. The sun always made him feel uncomfortable and he preferred to sleep in the day. He would start looking for one this week, he promised himself.
He reached for a book on his bedside table and smiled fondly as he picked up the familiar text. Dracula – one of his all-time favorites. He’d read it a million times, but he couldn’t get enough of it. There were so many vampire books out there, and he enjoyed them all, but he always returned to Dracula, which was a classic.
He read in the dim light of his room until the last of the sunset's illumination faded away. Once it was dark enough outside to suit his comfort levels, he put the book down. He got dressed and stepped out into the crisp night, heading down to his favorite restaurant. He ate there often. He didn’t see the point in cooking, it wasted time and he wasn’t good enough at it. Eating wasn’t a reward if he had to produce the meal himself. He had enough money, having just himself to support, to eat out every night.
He liked this restaurant because they always gave him his meat just the way he liked it. Other places just didn’t get it right, he’d tried before. He'd sent his plate back so many times in one restaurant that they finally asked him not to return, as what he was asking for was not within their safety standards. Luckily he had found Saul’s Diner, a place where the staff respected a paying customer enough to provide them with a meal to their taste, no matter what it was.
You’re usual, Mr. Hunter?
the waiter asked when he paused beside Hunter's table.
Yes, that would be great,
Hunter replied with a contented smile.
The waiter brought him a glass of water, and moments later a piece of steak that was hardly cooked at all. He loved his meat like this, rare enough that it still bled. The lovely crimson liquid pooled around the meat in a way that Hunter truly thought was beautiful.
It was something he could never get enough of. Overcooked meat made him nauseous, he didn’t enjoy it at all. As he took his first bite of the steak he felt a familiar satisfaction rush through him, as if finally he could relax. His evening was off to a great start.
Just as he was polishing off his steak, his cell phone began to ring. Hunter answered it quickly, not wanting to disturb the other patrons of the diner, of which there were few. Most that frequented the place at Saul's dinner hours were regulars like him, and none seemed interested in small talk or were bothered by much.
Hey, man! Come to a party at my house tonight, everyone’s going to be there and they’re bringing friends. It’s going to be great,
his friend Michael pleaded through the phone.
Hunter hesitated for a moment. He usually appreciated his solitude and quiet, but it had been a long time since he'd been out so he thought about it for a second. Michael was a good friend who always tried to get him to be a little more social than he preferred.
Alright,
he finally consented. I'll be there.
Great,
Michael replied happily. You're going to have a blast.
Hunter hung up the phone and took the last bite of his steak. He left a generous tip on the table for his waiter and a separate one for the cook. As he was leaving the diner he noticed that the night had become cloudy. He smiled to himself, as the darkness became even thicker.
Chapter Two
AS SOON AS HUNTER GOT there he noticed that here were cars parked all along the street leading up to Michael's house. It seemed he was going all out tonight. As Hunter walked up to the door he noticed that Michael had even hired bouncers that stood at the door, making sure only the right people, and no weapons, came in. Hunter held out his arms for the pat down and tried not to chuckle.
Just as soon as he stepped inside his senses were bombarded. He took a sharp breath as an initial cringe crossed his face. Loud music blared from speakers placed in every room and the volume hurt
