    A Word to the Reader

For many, Jamaica is merely a beautiful island waiting to be explored. However, for several us residing here, it becomes easy to miss its beauty when keeping quiet about our pain or the lack of care for such pain is wrapped up in generations of pretense and occasional laughter.

Sometimes we live through experiences that we subconsciously or otherwise fail to understand just how much it will affect or possibly dictate our future actions. At 24 years of age, I have decided to face the traumatic experiences that I have endured since the age of two years old and understand just how they have affected my relationships, fueled my depression and constantly prey on my anxiety.

My story isn’t for those who think I am just another broken soul in repair, neither is it for those who have already prepared their rebuttals for the way I have dealt with each internal demon I have added to my collection over the years.

I tell my story for those who feel voiceless.

This is for the girl who doesn’t think she is worth more than her appearance, the girl who thinks her body was meant for the pleasure of a man and is yet to realize true self love and acceptance of self. This is for the little boy who hides his pain well under the pretense of what is taught and accepted to be ‘manly’ without being given the opportunity of expression. Parents and guardians; be careful of the things you do or say to and around your children.

Once sentence can cost one lifetime.

This is for those who can connect. This is… Surviving Jamaica
