    BE PREPARED

How Not to Get Kidnapped in India

You never really appreciate how vital it is to be prepared until you’re not. There’s only so much a person can handle by winging it. And in my world, not being prepared can have a steep, steep price. A price I may not be prepared to pay.

I was in my twenties when I went to India for the first time. It was there I had a dream-come-true experience. I was a global business woman, living and working in a foreign land. It was heaven. But one moment of not being prepared almost put me in my own personal hell.

If you’ve ever been to Mumbai, you know that it’s a melting pot of sound and color and activity. Being out in the streets energized me, but I was there for work. So I spent most of my time in corporate meetings. When I finally did have an afternoon free, I knew exactly how I wanted to spend it.

You have to understand something about me and shoes. I LOVE shoes. Some people love cars. Some people love jewelry. For me, it’s shoes and purses. I have a whole room in my house devoted to them. No way I was leaving India without doing some serious shoe shopping.

Around 2:00 pm that day, I threw on some sweats and grabbed my big sunglasses. I didn’t bother applying makeup or doing my hair. The only people I knew who would see me were my driver and two bodyguards supplied by the company I worked for, and they didn’t care what I looked
