This was excellent. I'm sad that the third book hasn't been made yet, but once it is, I will be reading it the minute it comes out.Anyway, I think this series is my favorite of V. E. Schwab's so far, and I feel many others are of the same opinion. Everything about it is just thrilling. Something about morally grey characters really piques my interest for some reason.I don't have much more to say. I can't wait to see how this story continues in the wake of Eli's death (which I can't seem to believe myself). Victor, Sydney, Mitch, June—I don't know how their stories will end, but I can't wait to find out (eventually)!

A good, solid book that I enjoyed every minute of, but which sidelined the conflict/mutual obsession between Eli and Victor that was what made the first book for me.

Vengeful (Villains #2)by V.E. Schwab 2018 Tor Books 4.0 / 5.0 This awesome series continues with the themes of good vs. evil, with alternating points of view. And superpowers. Eli Ever and Victor, the evil twins, whose discovery that near-death experiences can manifest extraordinary abilities, return Victor still angry and violence-prone, and Eli remains the love/hate character, full of himself. Both are evil and power-hungry men, but Schwab has made these characters likeable.....you probably should not like these men, but you do. We meet June and Marcella, women seeking justice, and these women are not to be toyed with. They have their own brand of justice. My favorite character was Marcella:¨Perhaps she was glass. But glass is only brittle until itbreaks. Then itś sharp.¨I thought the first book was fantastic, but this one is even better. Some of the scenes are hard to forget, the characters are all strange, yet intriguing. There is love, violence, superpowers and contention that pulls you into this wild ride, and you never want it to end. Like a rollercoaster, you will feel the highs and the lows in the pit of your stomach, you will scream with emotion and you will never want the ride to end.A winner. V.E. Schwab is becoming a favorite...

What a wonderful series! The story was very gripping, the characters - interesting and complex.

Unfortunately, I didn't find this as captivating as the first one. Schwab decided to focus on new characters (in an effort to bring a more female presence, I guess?) when I just wanted a continuation of Victor and Eli's saga. Mitch was also pushed aside as a character (except when someone needs IT) and even Sydney had little to no development (beyond development of her power). June, the most interesting new character, was mostly auxiliary, a means to move the plot forward, but because of her power, we also don't really get a feel for who she is, her main motives (her weird obsession with Sydney is seemingly out of nowhere), or any development outside of the epilogue and even that is a bit of a cliffhanger. I was a little disappointed. I would probably have preferred the version of the book her editor told her to rewrite because, as Schwab put it, "it was just a continuation of Vicious". That's what I wanted as a reader. Marcella and June's stories should have been saved for a Tor novella or as more secondary characters instead of having the focus shifted to them.

Good grief I'm finally done with this.

I'm disappointed. I'm underwhelmed. I'm frankly a little pissed off. I went into this book with the excitement of a giddy child and came out a crone hardened by sheer boredom and anger (the worst kind). I was happy with the story, so very happy, but once Marcella (a new addition AKA the lady on the cover) mutinied and became the star of the show, around the 50% mark, I found myself dreading reading this.

I don't want this to be a long review so I'm going to be more brief than I usually am, especially when I have so many feelings. Here are my general feelings about the characters, the plot, and the themes of the book:

I found that all the veteran characters were cardboard cutouts of their former selves. They weren't really there long enough, their feelings and thoughts weren't touched on enough, to really warrant any feelings on my part. Victor was reduced to a hand flicking, wall leaning, tired guy who did things Victor would never do; Sydney was just meh and Mitch didn't drink nearly enough chocolate milk, though I did appreciate the extra time spent on Eli (though in the present, he wasn't nearly as entrancing as he had been in the past and in Vicious). Stell was back, and I actually really liked him. He was the only person who acted like a person, and I really appreciated that.

The new additions were mostly wallpaper. June had no logical motives. Both her and Marcella got their revenges way too soon and too easily to really hold any tension. While the new powers were interesting, I was constantly confused about the state of clothing in regards to June's ability. Basically, she can shapeshift into anyone living that she touches (minusing EOs) and glimpse into their most basic fundamental character aspects. And she also takes...their outfit? What about clothing she puts on separately? Can she remove the clothing? If she wants a specific outfit, does she have to go looking for someone wearing it?

Jonathan, another new addition, started out as a real person and literally became a cardboard cutout (okay not literally but pretty darn close). He just stood there. He rarely spoke. He always wore sunglasses even though everyone knew where he was looking. I forgot that he even existed for a moment.

Dr Haverty was okay, but a little cliche and convenient, and I wish he'd stayed around longer instead of popping up right when I'd completely forgotten he was a character.

Marcella...😒 Marcella was just Aelin Galathynius if you took away the tragic backstory. She's evil for the sake of it, black and white with no trace of grey, and a straight up psychopath. She tries to use feminism to support her ridiculous and unethical behavior and somehow...people agree? Like real people? She makes little snide comments about how men are always underestimating women who are ambitious, how they always call them crazy. No, lady, you are actually crazy. It's not just men saying that. Sydney isn't crazy. Sydney has morals. No one calls Sydney crazy (except for maybe Eli, but he's even more crazy). She said and did a lot of things that undermine real misogyny. She wasn't been underestimated or abused when male characters got mad at her for not holding up her end of the deal. She was being treated reasonably under the circumstances. Yes, her power of ruination was cool, but she used it as proof she is to be worshipped when she doesn't deserved to even be liked. I didn't know if this was intentional or not because the book didn't give me any clear message.

And that brings me to the general theme of this book. Or rather, the lack of a theme. It had no direction, had no point to make. There was no greyness to anything. There were the people we're supposed to see as good guys and those who were obviously villains. There was no unique and interesting philosophy, no real conflict. It was character-driven but didn't have any character tension. Scenes that were obviously supposed to be hardhitting and important character moments lacked any kind of tension whatsoever. They felt stale and boring. The first half of this book was promising, but it didn't keep that promise.

Every end may be a new beginning, but every beginning had to end.

Imagine that individuals who experience a traumatic and painful death, but who have such a strong will to live, can survive. And not only do they survive, but they gain some supernatural powers, whether it's being able to heal from an injury, pausing time, inflicting pain, or some other useful ability. It would be such an amazing origin story for a race of super heroes. Only one element would be missing - the desire to do some good in the world. And although some people would want to use their new found powers for personal gain and could become part of an evil villain cohort, the rest would muddle along with their super powers, but not doing anything super special. Although Schwab has created a fascinating world with unlimited possibilities of twists and interesting characters, I felt this story was missing an overall conflict. Too many Extra Ordinaries fighting each other, but for what purpose? Maybe this will all come together in a final sequel, but the story felt chaotic and lacked purpose for me. However, her writing is captivating with good characters and lots of action, so still enjoyable.

4.5 Stars. V.E. Schwab continues to amaze me with her writing. It's so unique and special that I feel privileged that she shares her stories with the world. This book definitely had the same darkness as Vicious and really continues to explore the idea of good vs evil. Schwab does this amazing thing where you are rooting for all of the characters but they are all rivals and by wishing for one character to do well, you are inherently wishing the other to fail, but you love them all so you can't choose a side. I did find this book to be a bit confusing at times because you hear from so many different characters so I sometimes had to pause to remember who's side they were on or who they were working for at the time. I did love seeing more Victor and Eli and the whole vibe of this book is incredibly unique. I will say that this story raised more questions than answers. As a whole it really felt like a second novel in a series. I thought it was a duology but after reading this I really think there will be a third book, which I will read and enjoy if it ever does come to be.

I could see in this book where some people would enjoy it but it wasn't really me. Apart from the story that jumped through a variety of time going through past and present and with characters who aren't very likeable, I honestly didn't care if all the characters died by the end. I'm not fond of deeply unlikeable characters and this was full of them.Having said all that it was a compelling read, I kept coming back to it but I wasn't invested in it.

How can I review this book without sounding like a madman? I don't know if I can....I LOVE THIS BOOK.I was already in love with Victor, Syd and Mitch, so going back to them was like visiting a friend after a long time. I was immediacy invested in what was happening and (just like in the first book) the formatting only make it better. Also just like the first book, I couldn't stop reading, I made myself stop because I needed to sleep because it was for me only I could have read this book in a day or two without sleeping, but... you know... life exist and I needed to be a functional human being, sadly.I also really enjoyed the new characters. Marcella and June were great, badass and their powers were great! And now into spoilers...ELI BACKSTORY. I didn't expect that, to be honest. I mean, I supposed he would be an orphan survivor of abuse because of the scars that were mentioned in the first book, but THAT?? My god, it was intense and sad, but also fascinating because you can see how he was from a very young age and that make him even more interesting as a character. How he trained himself to pose as a normal kid, to express emotions and to make seem like he had them... it was just great. Also all the time in EON (that btw in Spanish is called ONE) was... interesting, to say the least. The experiments that Harvert made on him were perfect, horrific and mad, but perfect... and the payoff... great. Just great. His time "helping" Stell was also great to see how much he was willing to do to gain his freedom but also to continue with his goals of eliminate EOs and Victor specially.VICTOR SITUATION. I suffer. Man, I really suffer for him. I don't know why I'm so attached to Victor, but I am and his arc in this book was painful. I wanted to help him and protect him. I was so tense, wishing he could find a solution and also escape from EON and... not die. Also, watching him grow as a character, being attached to Syd and Mitch more and more, even when he didn't want to admit it or demonstrate it.... and when he finally confronts Eli again... that "Run... Catch me." part I was screaming internally. THAT ENDING.Can I say...? I think Eli is alive, it's just take him longer to cure himself because of the serum.MARCELLA. Like I say, I really, really liked her. Her power was AMAZING. Her backstory was also amazing. I think she has the perfect combination of power, backstory and personality that makes a good badass woman (she's also a little power-crazy but it's okay, we like her anyway). In a moment I was "what are you doing, woman????" because she went way over the top with some stuff, but still... I liked how her arc went and ended.SYD AND JUNE Since book one I wanted to hug and protect Syd and this book was the same in that aspect. Seeing her grow was great, and how her powers improved over the years... wow. I was worried that she would bring back Serena tho, and I'm glad she didn't. Her relationship with Mitch, Dol and Victor was really cute and I like how they became a family in their own way. I also really liked June and her power, and I'm intrigued to know more about her and her backstory. Her relationship with Syd tho... I don't know. At times, it felt cute and needed, but other times felt kind of creepy. I suppose that was the intention. In the end I understand that she wanted to protect Sydney but also I'm glad that Syd went back with Mitch and Dol.So, basically, I'm in love with these characters and story and... I hope the next book is on the horizon. Also, I think Schwab has become one of my new favorites authors... I would need to read some of her YA books someday, when I'm in the mood for YA again.
