Chapter One: Nowhere to Go
Sebastian Dollarway is an asshole. There’s no other way to say it but to be completely honest. I don’t like the guy, and from day one of working for him I have wished I could move on and find another job. However, the job at the papermill in Allen, Ohio is just about all that is available to a young man of twenty years, and I am forced to keep it if I ever intend to do right by my new wife, Chloe.
Mr. Dollarway,
I say as I walk into his office. Can I have a moment of your time?
The older man looks back at me and seems to scowl as he waves me toward his desk. What do you want, Liam?
Sir, I have a question for you from a coworker.
A coworker?
he snorts. Why not come and see me himself?
I shrug my shoulders. He’s worried that you might be upset by his question, so I thought I would come in and ask for him.
The old man tilts his head to one side. Is this question actually concerning you, Liam?
I shake my head as I reply, Oh, no sir. Please understand, this is not from me. It is from another guy in the mill.
He nods his head and I ask, What would happen if a man were to marry and to ask whether his new wife could move into the boarding house with him? Would that be permissible?
I swallow hard as I watch Mr. Dollarway’s dark eyes look hard at me.
Married?
He stands to his feet and walks toward me. Marriage is a waste of a young man’s talents and time, Liam. It would not do him well to be attached to some young woman if he is going to work for me.
But there are those here who are married, sir. Are they wasting their talents and time?
I feel my body tremble a little as I wonder whether I should have asked such a thing as the owner of the papermill turns and walks toward a window.
Liam, the men here who are married are much older than you. Are you speaking about one of the supervisors?
No, sir,
I say as I shift my weight on my feet. He’s around my age.
Then it’s not a good idea to take a wife. Women often require more time than a young lad such as yourself can give.
He turns to look at me. Who is this man?
I swallow hard again before telling him, It was just some talk I overheard from a couple of guys. They don’t know that I am here asking, and I don’t want to get into trouble with them. One of them just wandered if he could move a wife into the boarding house if he were married.
My boarding house?
Mr. Dollarway asks. I nod my head. No, I would not be interested in bringing any female into one of my boarding houses, Liam. That would be asking for a range of issues that I am not prepared to deal with in my business.
But just to live there? Wouldn’t that be okay if she stayed in the man’s bedroom.
No.
Mr. Dollarway’s eyes glare at me as he puts a hand on the top of his desk. I have never allowed a woman to live inside any of my boarding houses, and I do not plan to start now. It’s 1956, Liam. This is not Sodom nor is it Gomorrah.
The old man turns and walks back behind his desk and takes a seat. If you would be so kind, I would appreciate it if you could let this young man know that if he does marry without consulting me first, he will lose his position in the mill. There is far too much to do around here to have a woman cause disruption to the natural order of things.
Yes, sir,
I say as I look down at the floor. I will tell him, sir.
Good,
Mr. Dollarway replies with a strange smile. Back to work with you, Liam. We have a lot of paper to make today.
Yes, sir.
With that, I turn and leave the office, closing the old wooden door behind me. Dammit,
I mutter under my breath as I walk down the old wooden steps toward the work floor below."
A good meeting was it?
Mr. Olsen asks as he watches me get off the stairs.
Not particularly,
I reply as I look at the men moving wood pulp over to begin producing new reams of paper. I don’t think Mr. Dollarway likes me.
Mr. Olsen, one of the three floor supervisors, shakes his head. Don’t take anything he says to heart, Liam. He is just a stingy old man trying to make a few more dollars before the Grim Reaper catches up to him. He’s a brash guy, but at least he pays decently.
Decently,
I laugh as I look at the supervisor. Less than two dollars per hour to move wood and paper all day long isn’t what I would call decent pay.
Mr. Olsen shrugs his shoulders. You could always go to work at the sanitarium in Scranton for a dollar-fifty per hour. I hear that they need more people to clean up the patients’ shit and to feed the ones that refuse to feed themselves.
The look on the man’s face tells me that he doesn’t appreciate my attitude about the pay. I work around fifty hours per week, so that allows me four hundred dollars a month. After the boarding house takes a hundred, I am left with three hundred minus taxes and other living expenses. I still owe the mill a thousand dollars for a loan that I took out to help my parents as well, which means I will be here for a while doing Mr. Dollarway’s bidding. I’m stuck, and there just isn’t any other way to put it.
I’ve got to get back to work,
I finally say as I begin to walk past Mr. Olsen. He reaches out and stops me with a hand before I get very far.
Look, I know what you asked him, and I am here to tell you that it’s dangerous to share too much about yourself, Liam. Mr. Dollarway is not a forgiving man and he does not forget what you tell him. He will ask you about the young lady again when he sees you again.
Young lady?
The one you are courting. You went to ask him if you could marry her, right?
I shake my head. No, it was nothing like that. I just had to ask about the boarding house’s accommodations, that’s all.
Which one are you in?
he asks.
The one on Dulaney Avenue near the Catholic church.
Mr. Olsen laughs a little. Shit, you have the worst out of the bunch. Charlie Baker manages that house. He is the boss’s brother-in-law.
I know,
I moan. I wish I was in a different house.
Well, you know that house assignment is on a first-come-first-serve basis. You are where you are because it was what was open when you were hired.
The supervisor pats me on the shoulder. Look, after you have been here for a full year, you are allowed to move out and find your own place. It’s just that Mr. Dollarway feels that his newest employees need to live close to the mill and be accountable to someone.
I’m not a child,
I tell him. I’m twenty years old and I worked as a lumberjack before I came to Allen. Surely I could get my own place sooner.
Mr. Olsen shakes his head. Nope. That’s just not the way the boss does business, Liam. He expects a certain level of commitment out of the guys for the first year. It’s take it or leave it.
I
