Long cold nights working at a trucker's diner makes sassy waitress Misty pine for something more. She gets her wish when rumors spread about strange creatures seen in the night, and one of the regular diners tells her a haunting story. Misty offers to help him, and before she knows it one trouble leads to another and she's entwined in a web of death and undeath. The undeath is a handsome and mysterious stranger, and the death might be her own. She'll have to use all her wits to get her out of this mess, and with most of her blood intact.

Gourds galore as Misty and company find themselves vine-deep in trouble. Halloween approaches and the sweet smells of autumn permeate the air. There's the husked corn, the ripened fruit, and the squash fields torn to shreds by an unknown and hoofed assailant. Misty and Roland dive into the pumpkin-patch mystery and find they might have bit off more rind than they can chew when they're faced with a most foul and unexpected creature.

Misty's carefree life of dealing only with the living has come to a dead-end with the arrival of Roland the vampire. Now she finds herself in the midst of an invisible feeding frenzy for Roland's soul box, a heavy paperweight that does nothing but ruin her rugs. Roland's troubles become her own as she's dragged into a murder mystery that sends her to the last place she thought vampire-hunting would lead her. Now she has to contend with something far trickier and more destructive than the undead: relatives.

The long, adventuring nights keep getting longer as Misty and Roland search out rumors of shadows and laughter. Added to her woes is a head cold of supernatural proportions larger than a trucker's appetite. She shambles through her work and Roland's play, a member of the undead in nose and crusty eyes. Their adventuring finds nothing but dust and a child's laughter, but when she begins to experience vivid dreams of tooth-decaying fantasy parks and zombie apocalypses Misty wonders if something isn't wrong. Roland comes to the rescue with only one choice to help her, but she's not so sure she wants to trade in her humanity for a souped-up existence with strings attached.

The diner gets some unexpected customers when Ralph orders a shipment of fresh fish that turn out to be more lively than anyone expected. Misty turns to Roland for help, but the vampire has his own worsening problems. His soul has an out-of-hell expiration date, and he needs Misty's help to find the cure before he sleeps with the fishes. Permanently. Now it's a race against time and the Devil as Misty and Roland swim their way up the stream of questions to the lake of answers.

A diner is the Grand Central Station of trucker gossip, and Misty learns that her friend Charlie hasn't been doing well since their run-in with Roland's flash cards. She visits him and finds Roland's influence made a worse impression on Charlie than two puncture wounds could ever do. His daughter thinks he's crazy and his house has all the makings of an aspiring junkyard. Charlie's paranoia digs six-feet deeper when an unexpected delivery is dropped in his lap. He begs Misty to help him, but she has her own problems to juggle as Owen Alston walks back into her life. He offers her a second chance at a date, but life and undeath threaten to get in the way of her free meal. New friendships are forged and new snarks are made as she navigates the crazy world that is her life.

For Misty, she just wishes they'd leave her out of their plans as she finds herself in the midst of another paranormal problem. This time a spooky specter makes itself known, and it's demands are a little high. She and Roland escape from its clutches and find themselves looking down the barrel of another familiar problem. Things start to look dim as intentions become transparent and problems become worse, but they find a little help in the most unlikely of places.

The final adventure. The last fiasco. And one hell of a mess. Misty's unusual life gets dangerous when Rose returns with a strange book and an even stranger companion. She intends to steal Roland's soul, but Misty gets in the way, literally, and her plans backfire for everyone. The problem becomes a family affair when Roland and Misty need help, and their call for backup is answered by Misty's aunt and uncle. The young and old couples find themselves soul-deep in trouble when the persistent pipsqueak vampire returns and makes an even worse mess than before. Now they're up against an unexpected foe with the fate of their very souls on the line along with Misty's chance at a long life with a certain handsome vampire. Will love prevail, or will Misty find herself on the wrong end of a silver bullet?
