About this ebook

This is the story of a family vacation to Yellowstone in 2076.  For a few decades, there has been a new progressive government in the United States.  It has eliminated hate speech, brought equality, and banished anyone or group that is tolerant.  Right-wing idealogues and media such as Rush Limbaugh and Fox News have been imprisoned or shut down.  One of the biggest achievements, though, has been the preservation of national parks from climate change and human destruction.  The Sykes family takes a journey to Yellowstone to see all of nature's wonders that have been protected by the new government structure.  A structure not everyone agrees with...including some people near Yellowstone.

    Introduction

This is the first installment in a series of short stories exploring life in the last half of the twenty-first century through the Sykes family.  The United States has adopted a new Constitution intended to guaranty equality and protect people from anything that offends.  Automation controlled by the government or willing private sector partners ensures protection of the environment and a minimum level of material well-being for everyone.  Computers and technology are used to ensure compliance with the new social order and government mandates.  Media and the education establishment teach the new values that have become the standard for all to follow.  Media outlets and educational institutions that chose not to conform to the new values or that continued to promote ideas contrary to the new order have been outlawed.  To oppose the new social framework, the courts have held, deprives people of the new constitutional right of freedom from prejudice, bigotry, hateful speech, and deprivation of economic rights.

Family, religion, and other institutions are still in the process of being reformed consistent with the new legal framework.  Many enlightened individuals embraced these changes and now lead the country in its re-birth as a Utopian paradise – where people live happily, free from offense, and secure that their human needs will be met.  The vast majority accept the new order and conform.  A small minority resists.

This story and future installments explore the impact of these changes and the struggles that accompany them through the lives of Glen and Laurie Sykes and their children.  When this first installment takes place, 2076, Glen is a senior government official in the Denver Region of the Department of the Environment, which administers all aspects of the Government’s environmental policy and its statutes and regulations.  Laurie is a senior policy attorney in the Denver office of the Department of Social Policy which administers various statutes and regulations that form the country’s social framework.  Their children, Courtney and Peter, who in 2076 are 12 and 10, respectively, attend a government school in Denver that prepares children to attend a select group of universities that provide stepping stones to prestigious careers in government and the best companies in the private sector – those proven to be reliable partners with the government.

Future installments will follow the Sykes family through these changing times and their response to the new social order and political system.

Excitement filled the Sykes’ household.  Today, they were about to embark on a much anticipated trip to Yellowstone National Park.  Ever since the Department of the Environment determined that human activity put the Park’s existence at risk, government permission was required to visit – and even enter – the Park.  Entry required special permits granted by the Department of the Environment years in advance.  The waiting list was lengthy, and only a limited number were granted every season.  Those desiring a permit were required to prove their commitment to following environmental statutes and regulations.  Any past infractions of those laws and regulations virtually guaranteed that you would never set foot in the Park – or any national park for that matter.  It was well known that even a violation of recycling or energy consumption laws years before applying for a permit would prevent you from receiving the coveted pass.
