About this ebook

"Wilderness".  The word alone conjures up many ideas.

Empty. Barren. Dry. Lost. Vast. Harsh. Solitary. Isolated. Unknown. Stark. Never-ending.

The list goes on.

In life, we can experience wildernesses in our relationships, our finances, our spiritual walks, and more. Sometimes these wilderness experiences are intense but brief; other times they last for months, years, or even decades.

It's easy to become discouraged, despondent, and angry. We want out, and we want out now—by any means possible.

In Exodus 16:10, we read something significant. As Israel is complaining about the lack of food in the desert, this happens: "And as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of Israel, they looked toward the wilderness, and behold, the glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud!"

The Israelites turned to face the wilderness, turned to look toward the barrenness, the uncertainty, the desert place. And that's where God appeared to them.

We often want to find any means of escape to run away from our own wilderness. But it is often in the wilderness that God meets us.

    Introduction

Wilderness.  The word alone conjures up many ideas.

Empty. Barren. Dry. Lost. Vast. Harsh. Solitary. Isolated. Unknown. Stark. Never-ending.

    The list goes on.

In life, we can experience wildernesses in our relationships, our finances, our spiritual walks, and more.  Sometimes these wilderness experiences are intense but brief, but other times they last for months, years, or even decades.

It’s easy to become discouraged, despondent, and angry. We want out, and we want out now—by any means possible.

In fact, it’s tempting to want so badly to escape the wilderness even if it means going back to things from which God has delivered us. Consider, for example, that even after hundreds of years of captivity and bondage in Egypt, it didn't take long for the Israelites to crave their captivity over the wilderness that came with freedom.

In Exodus 14:12, under pursuit by the Egyptian army, they cried out to Moses: Didn’t we say to you in Egypt, ‘Leave us alone; let us serve the Egyptians’? It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the desert!’

How often do we do the same when faced with times of spiritual barrenness? We don't want to go through the difficulties and pain of the wilderness but instead want to go back to the predictability of slavery.

But then later, in Exodus 16:10, we read something significant. In the midst of Israel's complaining about a lack of food in the desert, this happens: And as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of Israel, they looked toward the wilderness, and behold, the glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud!

The word translated looked is panah, which actually means to turn. The Israelites turned to face the wilderness, turned to look toward the barrenness, the uncertainty, the desert place. And that's where God appeared to them.

We often want to find any means of escape to run away from our own wilderness. But it is often in the wilderness that God meets us.

You may be looking toward a wilderness in your life. It feels unknown, scary, lonely, and vast. But be encouraged by what happens not just AFTER the wilderness but IN the wilderness.

    1. God Finds Us

    Genesis 16:7; Deuteronomy 32:10

What is a wilderness? Simply put, it’s a dry and barren land. In Scripture, it often refers to the place where God led the Israelites in wandering for
