Matilda King
Matilda King creates romance books. Unfortunately, she is yet to have the quintessential husband and cat found in author bios, but she dares to dream. When she's not banging her head against the wall over her deadlines, she's most likely binge-watching TV shows, consuming large amounts of food and all-together regretting every choice she's ever made - except for her books. The choice to write is a dream come true and she wants to share that feeling with you.

Chapter 1
It was starting to piss down with rain.
Melanie Smith shifted from foot to foot, her mobile pressed to her ear and her other hand clamped around a child’s fingers. Finally, finally, her call connected.
Where are you?
Look, dear-
Don’t you
dear me. Do you know how long I’ve been waiting?
Of course, I-
For once, Dawid, just once, I’d like you to give a rat’s ass about your daughter and your wife. Is that so hard?
Now, that’s unfair.
Any note of apology had fled from his voice. "The meeting finished later than I expected. What was I supposed to do? I can’t come running back at the drop of a hat. Don’t you know how frustrating this is for me, Mel?"
He always did this. Melanie gave up before they trod through the same damn conversation again without deviating an inch from its beaten path.
When are you coming?
Melanie felt a tug and looked down to see Agnes on the verge of devolving into a sulk. She nodded and held up a finger with the hand containing the mobile - a sign that Mummy was talking now, Agnes, so give her a second.
In an hour.
"Another hour?"
The grip got tighter around Melanie’s fingers.
You know how traffic is at this time of day.
Agnes began leaning down to the floor, leaving Melanie to try and support her with one hand.
Darling, can you stand up straight for me?
My feet hurt!
And oh, how Melanie hated the shoes that were on her daughter’s feet right then. They had looked so adorable on Agnes, right up until she had slipped on the ground and grazed her knee.
Melanie?
said Dawid, like an insistent earworm. She found her patience vanishing.
Call me when you get here.
She hung up the phone. There wasn’t a point in saying goodbye, nor did she want to find one. Rain continued to beat down on Melanie’s face, like little hammering fists determined to pin her down. With the chill in the air cooling her thoughts, she forced a smile. An hour. They could do this.
She looked at the building behind them and the open doorway that beckoned. It was no doubt warm in there.
She began to walk.
***
Gather round people, you’ll want to hear this one.
An hour, she reminded herself.
They only needed to stick it out for another… twenty-eight minutes and forty two seconds. The crowd shifted around her. The museum that they had entered for shelter from the rain was beautiful. The stories of the guide - not so much. Even so, the group stood in admiration around the latest exhibition. It was a massive, marble tomb that had been sealed off by the typical red rope and Melanie had half a mind to strangle herself with it.
This body was recently dug up and we have reason to believe that it belongs to the infamous Blood King.
The snap of pictures drowned out whatever suspense he was trying to build.
Legend tells us that King Włodzisław was more than a man. But, then again legends can be wrong.
The guide chuckled and she almost pitied the pitch of his voice. Too bad it grated on her ears to inspire much sympathy. Agnes shifted closer to her side and Melanie gave her a soothing pat on the shoulder, before taking her hand.
They talked of his battle prowess and his lineage, but what they talked about most of all was-
Incredibly boring.
Melanie’s attention began to fade and she found herself admiring the room. She craned her neck upwards. The ceiling extended out in glass panes that looked like large shards
