About this ebook

Mirana struggles to remember what the Wizard while she was under his spell did in hopes of aiding Mergadan and Tolatrom in finding Dursdan and his Gold Egg. Mirana’s mother fears that if Dursdan never returns, Mirana will be alone and tries to encourage her to find another option. Mirana, in helping a friend determine if a boy is related or not, discovers how closely the families of the Valley have become. She creates a way to track the family lines and helps change a law that will affect generations to come.
Tolatrom, Dursdan’s brother, has just become a Lord and has no idea how to manage his new House. He’s also facing resistance from the older Lords of the Circle who resent his position with a battle-seasoned dragon. This complicates his ability to search for Dursdan.
As these two Lost Souls struggle to find a way to bring Dursdan home, they discover things that will change life in the Valley forever.
This story is set within the first book of the series - Eggling - during the time that Dursdan is held captive in the Western Stronghold by the Wizard Aramel. If you haven’t had a chance to read the first book, you’ll find a coupon in Lost Souls for a free copy of Eggling. The coupon expires December of 2019.

Gold Magic - Lady Li Andre

    Chapter 1

Mirana was falling. She spun wildly unable to tell up from down. Her body was buzzing. Her throat burned and the stench made her retch but her stomach refused to heave. Her body felt unattached. She couldn’t open her eyes. Sounds echoed around her.

Loud booming footsteps paced a circular path that surrounded her. Harsh raspy breathing drew closer. A dark shadow loomed over her. What is taking that brat so long? The spell is going to wear off before he gets here.

She wanted to cover her ears to block out the voice but her arms were unresponsive. The spin was gradually slowing. The shadow kept moving around her, staccato beats pounded in her head with each footfall.

Ah! It’s about time! Finally he’s coming. The shadow growled. Curse the beast! It’s following him! The shadow ducked away.

    Mirana!

She knew the voice. It was Dursdan! She wanted to call out, to warn him. Another shadow came toward her. The putrid smell returned. She wanted to fight back but her body was numb.

Aramel! Dursdan’s anger roused her even further. She felt her body being shaken. Mirana, wake up!

She desperately wanted out of this nightmare. Dursdan’s plea pulled at her but something held her fast.

The putrid smell became overpowering. It’s no use, boy. You can’t wake her. The dark shadow stalked around her again.

What have you done to her? Dursdan’s voice was defiant.

Oh, I’ve done nothing drastic, just a little sleep spell. She’ll wake from it in short order.

If I were you, I’d leave this Valley and never return. The dragons will tear you to shreds, just like the troll you sent.

The shadow gasped. How did you know about that?

    Release her from this spell!

Foolish boy. As if you would understand the ways of wizards. This has nothing to do with pale insignificant daughters of farmers. It is you I want!

Mirana felt cold. Dursdan was in danger! Loud crashing and snapping erupted around them. The world trembled.

The shadow screamed. You won’t cheat me again!

There was a loud bang. A stench even worse than before made her gag. Mirana was falling again. The world was falling with her. Something grabbed her body. It was warm and scaly. The abrupt stop made her dizzy.

Sinotio! Where is he? She knew that voice, too. It was Mergadan. She felt hands touch her face. Mirana, can you hear me? The hands moved to her neck. She still lives. Here, Sino. Let her go now. I have her.

Mirana felt her body being cradled in arms. She could hear the pounding of a heart and rapid breath.

Distant footsteps ran toward them. Merg! What happened?

I don’t know, Aber. It was Aramel. I’m sure of it.

More hands touched her face. Mirana, my girl. Can you hear me?

She knew Pa’s voice. She wanted to reply but her mouth was filled with wool. She could feel him take hold of her hand but was unable to even wiggle her fingers.

The arms holding her shifted slightly. The others are coming. Here’s Dachia and Carala. Perhaps my Ma will know what ails her.

Shuffling feet and whisking skirts drew close. There was a soft gasp. Oh, Merg. Where is our son?

He is gone. The wizard has taken him. Ma, can you see what is amiss with Mirana?

Leathery hands ran lightly along her face and body. There is magic involved for certain. Yamitra should be called.

Her father released her hand. Dorsadram and Humatsu are coming. I will ask one of them to fetch her.

Mirana felt lost without her father’s fingers wrapped around her own. She could hear Dachia weeping in the background. A deep fear filled her. What had happened to Dursdan?

She could hear the thrum of dragon wings. It filled the air. A bugle nearby startled her. Her body trembled.

More footsteps rushed toward them. Mergadan! What has happened? She was chilled by the fierce tone of Dorsadram.

Aramel did something to Mirana and stole Dursdan away.

Her body went cold. No! Dursdan could not be gone. Tears flooded her eyes and threatened to drown her.

By the First Egg, we have sorely underestimated that old Wizard. Ah, here comes Petrolam. He’s brought Yamitra. And Kalista has come as well. Tis a grave day for the House of Dram.

Mirana could hear her mother’s worried voice, demanding to know what happened. Her father did his best to explain.

Carala’s leathery fingers squeezed her hand. Have no fear, Mirana. She let go and moved away. I can see no injury to her. Magic must be involved.

Mirana caught the potent smell. She panicked. The shadow had returned! Her body convulsed.

Kalista cried out. Oh! Yamitra, what has he done to her?

The shadow washed over her, drowning her in the vapors. Every muscle screamed in protest. She could not escape!

Looks like some kind of sleep spell with a few added ingredients to keep her stiff. I can reverse it but it would be better for it to wear off on its own.

Dorsadram rumbled in the background. We need to speak with her now if there is any clue she can provide us in finding Dursdan.

Yamitra hummed. She may not have much to tell.

We must know if she does. Time is of an essence.

    Very well.

The smell grew even stronger. Mirana wanted to get away from the shadow and the evil stench. Her body remained unmoving.

    Hold her gently now.

The odor approached her face. Her mouth was forced open. Burning liquid was poured down her throat. She gagged and gasped. Electricity flew through her limbs. She coughed, trying to reject the potion being forced into her.

Easy, Mirana. You are safe. We’re here with you. The old healer’s voice echoed through her dizzy haze.

Mirana became abruptly aware of sensation. Her body tingled. The pungent smell lingered and a bitter taste stung her tongue. She shuddered and fought against the strong arms holding her.

Are you sure this is safe? Mergadan sounded concerned.

Yamitra hummed. It’s not the best but it won’t do her any permanent harm.

Mirana forced her eyes open. Light flooded in. Pain exploded in her head. She shut them again and groaned. Every part of her body ached. She could hear Dorsadram talking to her father but they were too far away to make sense of what was being said.

Someone took her hand. Mirana, can you hear me?

She turned toward her mother’s voice. Even that small movement sent shivers through her body. A dense haze seemed to settle in around her mind.

That’s not a good sign. Yamitra’s voice sounded distant.

Footsteps approached. I’ve sent Aber to bring a wagon. How does she fare?

Things do not look promising, Dors. I’m not sure what Aramel added to the sleeping potion. Even if she wakes, she may not be able to remember much. I’ve collected some of the powder residue from her clothes. Maybe I can tell from that what he used. She’s beginning to wake but is still very drowsy. There’s not much more I can do until I know what all the ingredients were in the original potion.

Mirana managed to open her eyes enough to see the forms around her. Her mother sat on one side of her and Yamitra sat on the other. The fog was making it hard for her to remember where she was. Why were they all out in the field? She glanced up at the man holding her.

Mergadan looked down. I think she’s coming around.

Dorsadram knelt next to Yamitra. Mirana, what can you tell us?

She had no idea. Her face felt numb. She moved her mouth experimentally. No sound came out.

Yamitra shook her head. It is as I feared. He added something to the potion to befuddle her.

Another figure approached. Dorsadram, what’s going on? Why have the dragons assembled us here?

Dorsadram rose and turned to the newcomer. Ill tidings, Itogan. The Wizard Aramel has spirited Dursdan away.

Somehow that sunk through the misty tendrils wrapping around her mind. Mirana went cold. Dursdan was gone! Tears blinded the little vision she’d recovered.

Soft fingertips brushed them away. She would be better off in bed. Yamitra sounded tired.

Mergadan stiffened under her. By the Shell, I was hoping he’d have a little peace but I suppose with all the other dragons here it’s no wonder that Natalo brought Tola.

Here, Merg. Pass her over to me. You’ve probably lost feeling in your limbs by now.

Thank you, Kalista. I do need to see how Dachia is doing. And I’d better be the one to break all of this to Tola.

Mirana’s body was shifted but she felt strangely detached. She looked up at her mother, struggling to form words. Where is Dursdan?

Kalista looked down at her. No one knows. Aramel took him away. She pulled Mirana closer. Curse the day that Aber agreed to grow those plants for him. She curled over Mirana and sobbed.

Dorsadram had been explaining the situation to several Lords and Riders who had joined the group. Itogan growled. I knew he was up to mischief. But what does Aber’s daughter have to do with it?

Mirana peered between the folds of her mother’s dress. Mergadan’s face was stern. To lure Dursdan away from the protection of the dragons. Sinotio almost took down half the tree trying to get at him.

Lord Petrolam came over and knelt beside Yamitra. Can you contact him, Ma? Find out what this is all about?

Yamitra’s face drooped. I can try. There’s no guarantee that he will answer me. I don’t have the ability to get to the Stronghold on my own. I was only there a few times and I don’t know what the place looks like now.

Petrolam helped her up. Is there any more you can do for the girl?

Not until I test the powder and determine what herbs were used. What she really needs is rest.

    Then I’ll fly you home.

Dorsadram put a hand on his shoulder. Though we have a tenday meeting today, this can not wait until sunhigh. An emergency meeting must be called. Join us at the Keep when you have your Ma settled.

Mergadan returned. I’ve asked Tola to take Dachia and Carala back home.

The wife of a Dragon Lord faces many challenges. Dorsadram followed the path of a Red dragon across the sky. How’s our newest Lord doing?

Natalo won’t be parted from him. Tola’s been sleeping with the dragon on his rock.

Dorsadram frown. And now without Dursdan, we have no knowledge of this at all.

Mergadan covered his face. I curse the day I saw that Gold Queen rise to mate! He sobbed softly. I only wanted the best for my son.

Dorsadram patted his shoulder. As any Da does. You’re a brave man and a worthy Lord.

Mergadan wiped his eyes and looked at the Head of the Circle. I don’t understand why Aramel is doing this. He tried to barter for the egg, steal it, send a troll after it, even take it by magic. And now this? Why? He’s a Western Wizard, one of our allies. My own family is descended from the like.

Dorsadram rubbed the stubble on his chin. It was the Western Wizards who created the Dragon Lords in the first place. Maybe they didn’t want another Rider to have a Golden Dragon, considering what happened to Zaradan. According to the records, the Lady Korithiena bartered with a great Gold Queen to get that egg for him. Maybe it was wrong to take it. There is so much we are ignorant of.

Mergadan clenched his fists. Then why didn’t he just come to the Circle? Why try to steal it and now abduct Dursdan?

Humatsu hurried over. Aber will be here with the wagon soon. Aramel took what he wanted from the plants and made a mess of the rest.

Mergadan smacked a fist in his open hand. And how is that in keeping with the ways of the Western Wizards?

Humatsu scowled. I never trusted Aramel. When the other Wizards went through the Portal, they left him behind. They told him it was to protect it but I think otherwise. I think it was to be rid of him.

Dorsadram pointed at something in the distance. Here comes Aber. Let’s help get Mirana into the wagon. I’ve called for an emergency meeting of the Circle. What’s more important now is finding a way to get Dursdan back. I’m worried he may be in danger.

Mirana squeezed her eyes closed, pushing the tears out to trickle down her cheeks. Kalista sat up as the wagon approached. She pulled a cloth from her apron and wiped Mirana’s face. The tears kept flowing.

The Lords came over. Mergadan knelt beside her. Here, Kalista. Let me lift her into the wagon.

Her mother relinquished her hold and Mergadan easily picked her up. Humatsu helped get her into the wagon while Dorsadram and Aber got Kalista into the box. Kalista wrapped her in blankets.

A shadow flew overhead. Everyone looked up. The Red landed and pranced up to the wagon. Tolatrom jumped down. Gran is seeing to Ma. How fares Mirana?

Mergadan put a hand on his younger son’s shoulder. Yamitra says she’ll live.

Good to hear. I want to get out and start looking for Dursdan.

Dorsadram cleared his throat. The Circle has been called. As the Lord of the House of Trom, it is your responsibility to be there.

Humatsu managed a rough chuckle. Go easy on our new Lord, Dors. He’s only been one for a couple of days. I was surprised to see him at all.

Tolatrom shrugged. Today is Dursdan’s Day Natal. I was going to attend. When Nata began fussing, I knew something must be wrong. I jumped on and he brought me here.

Very good. Dorsadram turned to Aber. Get her home.

Mergadan came to the side of the box and took Mirana’s hand. If you remember anything that might help us find him, please tell me right away.

Mirana managed to nod. Please find him.

    We will. Don’t worry.

Aber shook Tolatrom’s hand. How are Drasia and Madrea holding up? I’m sure Kalista will be over there soon. She’s been so busy with birthings lately.

Tolatrom looked puzzled. To see one of the women of the House?

Aber grinned. To see Madrea. They are kin. But I’d imagine she’ll be there for the women as well.

Tolatrom’s shoulders drooped. I have a great deal to learn about my new family.

Dorsadram moved toward his own Red. Right now, we have a meeting of the Circle to attend. Shall we?

The Lords hurried toward their dragons, mounted, and burst into the sky. Kalista covered Mirana’s face to protect her from the dust of the downdrafts. When she pulled the blanket back, the dragons were already distant dots.

The wagon lurched as Aber tapped the reins to encourage the pullers forward. Mirana closed her eyes and curled into her mother. They had to find him! Her heart twisted and she struggled to breathe. What if he didn’t come back? He was her match and she was his Chosen, even if no one else knew.

    Chapter 2

Tolatrom leaned forward in the harness, watching the ground pass quickly below. Natalo’s effortless wing beats propelled them forward. He watched every shadow shift as they flew by. Where was Dursdan? Everything looked different from this perspective. He’d flown over the Valley with his father on Sinotio’s back many times but now he sat alone in Natalo’s saddle. This was the first day he’d flown on his own.

Tears stung his eyes. It was almost too much. Just the day before he’d woken surrounded by Natalo’s wings after the nightmarish death of Crastrom. Dursdan had somehow kept Natalo from dying when Crastrom passed on. Tolatrom closed his eyes to squeeze the tears out and let the wind of their passage blow them away. He couldn’t lose Dursdan. Not now. Not after just loosing Crastrom. He felt Natalo rumble softly under him. Was he agreeing or trying to comfort him? He wished he could talk to Natalo the way Dursdan could.

He looked up as they crossed the river and flew toward the Keep. Natalo circled, looking for an open space in the bailey. The courtyard was already packed with dragons. Several moved over to make room for him. He came to rest near Sinotio. Mergadan had already dismounted.

Radachi hurried over as Tolatrom climbed down from the saddle. Tolatrom wobbled as his feet touched the ground. His uncle steadied him. Easy, Tola. You still look a little pale.

Mergadan joined them. That’s what he gets for sleeping on a rock with his dragon.

Tolatrom sighed. I’ve had no choice. He won’t let me out of his sight. I’ve only been parted from him long enough to relieve myself. And I’ve had to use the workers’ pits in the barn for fear that he’d tear apart the main house if I went in it.

Radachi kept his arm around Tolatrom’s shoulders as he led him toward the Keep. A strange affair indeed. And now this, called early for the Tenday Meeting. I’ve only heard a few words on what has happened. Something about Aramel grabbing Dur.

Mergadan looked around the bailey. Is everyone here?

Now that you and Tola have arrived.

The sooner we get this meeting going the sooner we can finish it and start looking.

Tolatrom let his father and uncle pull him through the crowd. He glanced over his shoulder. Natalo, Sinotio, and Osiral were following them. Other dragons turned and touched their noses to Natalo as he passed them. Tolatrom wondered if it was some kind of greeting he’d never noticed before.

Radachi squeezed his shoulders to get his attention. And how is Drasia doing?

I don’t know. She went in to comfort her Ma and I haven’t seen much of her since then, other than her bringing me some food. We haven’t had any time to talk about what happened.

Radachi sighed. I’m still amazed about that. Who would have ever thought that a dragon could live beyond his Rider.

It was Dursdan. He knew somehow. We have to get him back!

Mergadan paused. We will, even if I have to turn over every stone between here and the Northern Wastes. I will find him.

Trusumo bugled. The other dragons turned to face him and bugled in return. Tolatrom felt it reverberate through his body. All the other Lords and their dragons joined them as they moved toward the main doors of the Keep. Radachi clapped Tolatrom’s shoulders. Let’s go in and see what Dors has to say.

Tamtrax stepped away from his Brown and blocked their path. He frowned. Tolanar, what are you doing here?

Mergadan put his hands on his hips. That’s Tolatrom now. Have you forgotten? He’s Lord of the House of Trom and he’s here for the same reason we’re all here. A meeting has been called. Now, let’s move on.

Tamtrax laughed coldly. He didn’t budge. That was a fast move to save the House of Trom, a mere formality.

Tolatrom felt a chill creeping around his gut. What if they wouldn’t let him come? He didn’t care. There was nothing that was going to stop him from searching for his brother.

Other Lords had paused to see what was going on. Dorsadram pushed through them. What goes here? Our need is urgent. Come inside.

Tamtrax pointed at Tolatrom. Mergadan has brought his youngster along and I was just reminding him that this was a Lords affair.

Sorazan stepped forward. Tam, perhaps you had too much of Jasorad’s concoction he claims is wine the other night. I seem to remember accepting Crastrom’s formal adoption of this young man. With the untimely death of Crastrom, that makes Tolatrom, as his heir, Lord of the House of Trom.

Stefram pushed into the cluster around Tolatrom. He’s much too young and inexperienced to sit in the Circle yet.

There were a few murmurs of agreement but Radachi cleared his throat. I was a young man with just an Eggling when I first sat in the Circle, yet my first council was one of war. The loss of Dursdan is no less important. And Tolatrom stands with a war-seasoned dragon.

Tamtrax snickered. Is his dragon going to tell him what to do?

Tolatrom felt Natalo lean forward and put a hand on the dragon’s neck. He could feel the deep vibration of the growl. Balashir came up beside Dorsadram. Perhaps we should put it to a vote.

There were some ayes of agreement. Humatsu broke into the cluster. We don’t have time for this. Too much has already been wasted. If we are to have any chance of rescuing Dursdan from the Wizard, we must act swiftly.

Stefram looked around at the others. I agree with Bala. We should put it to a vote.

Trusumo and Dozi bugled loudly in unison. Every Lord was instantly on guard, searching for the threat. The Red and Bronze moved through the crowd. Lords scrambled to get out of their way. The pair entered the main doors of the Keep. All of the other dragons followed.

Natalo pushed Tolatrom forward. Sinotio and Osiral took up positions on either side of him. The other dragons formed a scaly wall around Tolatrom and escorted him into the Keep and through the massive doors of the Inner Sanctum.

Tolatrom had never been in this chamber of the Keep, which was reserved strictly for the Lords and their dragons. The room was immense. The ceiling was tall enough for even the largest dragon to sit comfortably under it. The roof of the Inner Sanctum was taller than the rest of the massive building. Windows above let bright light flood down into the center of the room. Banners with family crests hung along the walls.

Two crescent-shaped tables surrounded by carved wooden chairs occupied the center of the room forming a circle with an open center. Some of the chairs were pushed back against the wall, a few of those draped in black cloth. Each chair was carved with a family crest. Osiral stopped behind the chair at the table with the crest of the House of Achi. Sinotio sat behind the chair with the crest of the House of Dan next to Osiral. Natalo pushed Tolatrom onward until he came to the chair carved with the crest of the House of Trom. Natalo took his place behind the chair and curled his tail around his legs so that others could pass behind him to their own places.

Tolatrom wasn’t sure what to do so he stood next to his chair and waited. The other Lords followed the dragons into the room and stood beside their own chairs. Many of them looked bewildered and a few looked annoyed. Dorsadram and Humatsu came to their places. Tolatrom noticed that Trusumo and Dozi were sitting on either side of the doors. Dorsadram picked up a small wooden hammer and tapped the table. Let this meeting be called to order.

Trusumo and Dozi closed the doors and took their places behind their Lords. All the Lords except the Head sat down. Tolatrom followed their example. Dorsadram stood on his left and Wasoras sat on his right. His father and uncle were on the other side of the set of tables.

Dorsadram waited until the room was quiet. It seems the dragons have decided for us. So be it. Now, on to business. He filled his goblet from a pitcher and passed the vessel to Humatsu. The pitcher made its way around the table. When it came to him, Tolatrom poured some of the wine into his goblet and passed the vessel back to Dorsadram. The Head raised his goblet. Within the Circle, unity is strength!

Tolatrom repeated the phrase with the other Lords and took a sip of the wine. It burned his throat and made his eyes sting. He was glad he’d only taken a sip.

Dorsadram put his goblet down. This is a grave day, indeed. I’m certain everyone has heard by now that the Wizard Aramel has spirited Dursdan away.

There was a rumble of quiet conversation around the table. Falahad stood abruptly. That old fool has gone mad! He’s become warped by his confinement in the Stronghold.

Dorsadram gave him a look and the Lord sat down. The Head looked across the tables. Petrolam, was Yamitra able to contact him?

Lord Petrolam rose. She tried but he did not answer. Perhaps he doesn’t wish to. Ma claims he was left behind because he was bitter – angry toward the other Wizards because of some event but she didn’t say what it was. She believes a Gold Egg in Aramel’s hands poses a serious threat. He sat down.

Dorsadram sighed deeply. On this we agree. It’s not just Dursdan we have lost, but the Gold Egg as well.

Wasoras stood. That is reason enough to begin searching at once. If he was responsible for summoning that marsh troll, we can’t risk him increasing his power with the magic a Gold egg possesses.

Stefram was on his feet before Wasoras could sit down. This is preposterous! What are we supposed to do? Just head off in any direction and hope to stumble across them?

Balashir didn’t even bother to stand. It’s a waste of time. Tamtrax agreed.

Itogan rose and surveyed the other Lords. Were it my son, and I’m certain you feel the same, I would not rest a moment until I’d found him and saw him safely returned. Many Lords rumbled in agreement.

Tamtrax got up and planted his fists on the table. And where do you suggest we look?

Itogan rose and stared at him across the table. In the Stronghold, of course. Where else would he have taken Dur?

Tamtrax stood straight. And how are we going to find that? Or perhaps you haven’t noticed. He glanced around the tables. Has anyone else seen it lately? I haven’t.

Humatsu stood. It can’t just have disappeared. The Stronghold is massive. It takes up the top of an entire mountain.

Stefram crossed his arms. I haven’t seen it in years. Maybe the Wizards took it with them.

Wasoras leaned back in his chair. Or maybe that old bumbling fool blew it up with his worthless magic. He was useless during the war. I know. He was assigned to my wing. Aramel couldn’t even manage a decent smoke screen.

Tamtrax turned to Dorsadram. And what does the old Wizard want with Aber’s daughter anyway? The farmer is of your House, not the House of Dan.

Dorsadram rose slowly. Aber was growing plants for Aramel because of a debt he owed him. Until he took an interest in Dursdan’s Gold Egg, Aramel was no threat to us. He occasionally helped others. The Head seemed lost in thought. He cleared his throat. The Stronghold must still be there. Many of us have been there, both during the war and after it. Perhaps Aramel has found some way to hide it from our view.

Humatsu stood up. I agree. But it should be on the maps. I’ll go to the library and fetch one.

After the Second left the room through a smaller door, Balashir stood. What do you intend us to do?

Dorsadram looked at Mergadan, who stood up. Aramel took Dursdan by wrongful means, right in front of me. I’ll do whatever it takes to get him back! Balashir started to say something but all of the dragons roared in unison.

Dorsadram nodded. We will search until he’s found.

Humatsu returned carrying a rolled scroll. His face was tight. He returned to his place. There is magic involved in this. He unrolled the scroll on the table and pointed to the northern mountains. It was here. I know it because I drew this map.

Everyone leaned forward. Itogan ran his fingers along the range. Then where is it?

Humatsu planted his hands on the table. It’s gone from the map! Aramel has found some magic that not only hides the Stronghold from our eyes but also erased it from the map.

Itogan huffed. By the First Egg, many of our dragons have been there. Surely they can find it.

Sorazan stood. Then we should begin looking. He turned expectantly to the Head.

Dorsadram moved away from his chair and came around the end of one table to enter the space between them in the center of the room. Now is the time for action. The Bronzes, Reds, and Silver will take the long patrols as they can fly faster and farther. The Blacks, Browns, and Whites will cross the foothills, looking for any trail that might indicate a pathway to the Stronghold. The Yellows, Greens, and Blues will cross the northern end of the Valley in case Aramel has a closer camp. He was seen just a few days ago not far from the cultivated lands. Crastrom, take the Winglings and… Dorsadram stopped as he face the chair of Trom. Oh, forgive me, Tolatrom. This will take some getting used to. Itogan, you are now in charge of the Winglings. Use a sweep pattern across the Valley and see if they can pick up any scent trails that might give us clues as to Aramel’s whereabouts.

Balashir half rose. Maybe Tolatrom should fly with the Winglings. He has no experience at all.

Natalo growled deep in his throat. Tolatrom reached back and patted him. Dorsadram looked up at the Red. No, Natalo is battle-seasoned and a fast and strong flier. We need him in the field. He looked around the Circle for a moment. Sorazan, Mithra should be able to match him. I’m assigning Tolatrom to you.

Sorazan stood. I accept the assignment.

Dorsadram returned to his place and lifted his goblet. Let’s bring our lost soul home!

Many raised their goblets and shouted together, Bring him home!

Tolatrom took another small sip with the others and replaced his goblet. He watched the few who had been less than enthusiastic. That concerned him but he didn’t have time to think about it. Humatsu called him over and assigned a section of the map to Sorazan. Some of these sections are less filled in than I’d like. I’ll have a parchment copy for you shortly to take with you. Fill in any gaps you find.

Sorazan turned to Tolatrom. Grab your gear. I’ll wait here for the map and meet you at your place.

    Tolatrom bowed slightly. Until then!

Trusumo and Dozi opened the great doors. Lords and dragons spilled out through the entry of the Keep and into the bailey. The courtyard was full of people, who quickly backed up to make room for the dragons.

Tolatrom was surprised to see Drasia there. She was talking to Avanta. Radachi caught up with him. Looks like our ladies are waiting to hear the news. He pulled Tolatrom along as he made his way through the crowd toward the women.

As they got closer, he could hear Drasia’s words. Tola is wonderful, really. He even got me the perfect gift for my Celebration Day! She noticed him and ran to meet him. She threw her arms around his neck. What has been decided?

Tolatrom didn’t know how to respond. He hugged her then gently pulled back, aware of others staring at them. Drasia frowned but stepped back, too. Had he offended her?

Radachi hugged Avanta. We are to go out searching.

Drasia’s face tightened with concern. We’ve heard so many rumors. Some say Dur has been taken by a Wizard who plans to kill him.

Tolatrom closed his eyes. He hated rumors. That’s only partly true. Aramel has taken him but we don’t know why or what he plans to do. He wasn’t sure how much he was allowed to say. I’m to go on search with Sorazan. He’ll be at the house as soon as he gets the map.

Drasia took his hand. Then we’d best get home and get your gear together. She pulled him toward Natalo.

Tolatrom was surprised. Radachi chuckled. She’s already Lady of the House.

Tolatrom hesitated. I’m not even sure what’s expected of me. I’ve only been a Lord for a little over a day.

Radachi patted his back. A Lord trusts his dragon and a Head trusts his Lady. Good Searching! He helped Avanta up into the saddle, mounted, and the White sprang into the sky.

Tolatrom let Drasia sit in front of him in the saddle. It was different than flying with Crastrom. She leaned back slightly into him. He liked the feeling. They circled the courtyard of the Trom Homestead to alert those below. Women grabbed children to pull them away and men hurriedly pulled tools and other implements to clear a space for the dragon to land by the front of the main house.

Madrea came running out. What has happened?

Drasia let Tolatrom help her down and turned to her mother. I’ll explain everything later. We must get Tola ready to go out. He’s been assigned to Lord Sorazan for a search. She headed toward the house with her mother following.

Madrea could barely keep up. A search? For what? They disappeared inside the house.

An elderly man approached. Tolatrom struggled to remember his name. Crastrom had introduced him to so many people at the party that he was pressed to remember. The man paused a few steps away. So, you’re off already.

All the dragons have been called to search.

A middle-aged man moved toward them. Pa, what’s the news?

The elder frowned. I’m still waiting to hear myself.

Drasia came flying out of the house, her arms loaded. Madrea was following at a more reasonable rate. Norman, can you help Tola with the armor? She passed the leather pieces to the middle-aged man.

He untangled the pieces of leather armor. The fittings will have to be adjusted. Uncle Cras was a little larger in the gut.

The elder got out of the way. He stood scowling as Norman strapped on the armor. Tolatrom did his best to help. Drasia and Madrea, with the aid of a flock of younger men, were tying bundles and parcels to the harness.

Madrea pointed to one. There should be enough food here for a few days. By the Egg, be careful! We’ve just lost Crastrom. We can’t afford to lose the only hope for the House of Trom.

Norman adjusted the waist belt. So, when will you be back?

Tola finished buckling the last strap of the chest plate. I don’t know. When we find him.

The older man had stayed back with his arms crossed while Tolatrom was outfitted. He finally moved forward through the gathered crowd. Foolish to lose the Gold Egg to a Wizard in the first place.

Norman looked confused. What? How did that happen?

Drasia pushed Tolatrom toward Natalo. I’ll explain it all but Tola needs to go. Lord Sorazan will be here any moment.

The older man scowled. So all the dragons are just up and leaving? And what if the Wizard sends a hoard to attack us while you’re all off and gone?

Madrea took the older man by the arm. Oh, Troman. Must you always think the worst?

    It’s happened before.

Tolatrom was already sweating in the heavy battle armor. Not all the dragons will be leaving the Valley. Some will be making sweeps across it and others will be just to the north.

Troman pulled free of Madrea. And what of the Leaving Ceremony?

A dragon shadow crossed the ground. Tolatrom looked up. I don’t know but Lord Sorazan is here. I have to go.

Drasia grabbed him and kissed him on the cheek. Be safe.

A new warmth spread from the point of contact. He hugged her and let her go. I will.

Madrea pulled Drasia back. Shells, child. Let the poor man mount so he can be on his way.

Tolatrom climbed into the saddle. Let’s go, Nata! The crowd backed up quickly to give them space. The Red bunched his muscles and they jumped into the sky. Tolatrom glanced back down as his new home receded below him. How was he ever going to manage all of this?

Sorazan’s Bronze swooped by him and the Lord called back over his shoulder. Let’s go!

Tolatrom pushed his worries aside and leaned into the saddle as Natalo turned to follow Mithra. There would be time to sort the rest out when Dursdan was safe at home.

    Chapter 3

Mirana was lost in a maze. Every wall contained a different image but the walls rippled and she could not tell what the images were. Voices filtered through the maze. She followed the sound and discovered a brighter area. She moved toward it. The voices grew louder. The ground gave way. She was falling! She flailed her arms. Something was smothering her.

Mirana opened her eyes. Her hands gripped the blanket that was draped over her. She blinked the world into focus. It was dim but a stream of light pulled her eyes toward a doorway. It was familiar. She looked around again and realized she was laying on the ottoman in the sitting room.

The light and voices came from the kitchen. She focused on the sounds. It was her mother and Yamitra. There was an occasional thump. Mirana rubbed her eyes. The soft thump came again. Mum must be making bread. She couldn’t remember falling asleep in the sitting room. It confused her.

Her mother’s voice rose with concern. But she’s been asleep all day.

Yamitra clicked her tongue. That is concerning but he did use too much sleeping agent. My Gran always said Aramel couldn’t make a decent spell to save his life. So the spell will have to run its course. All I did was wake her long enough to answer a few questions. I’m still working to determine the other ingredients but I doubt any of them will cause her harm.

Another thump. I just hope she’ll be all right. I need her whole and sound. There are too many women due this summer for me to be the only midwife. I’m hoping that once she passes her Day Natal, she’ll be able to take over half of the load.

Yamitra hummed tunelessly. Don’t rush so much responsibility on her shoulders so quickly. She needs time to hone her skills.

We don’t have the luxury of time. The women of this Valley seem bent on having babies.

Yamitra chuckled. I’m sure the men have something to do with it.

A door opened and closed. Footsteps echoed down the hallway. Evening to you, Yamitra. Her father’s voice sounded tired. Has she stirred?

Not yet. I just stopped by to check on her but got caught up in the kitchen.

I dare say that seems to be common among women folk.

The dough thumped. Is there any news, Aber?

Afraid not. I watched the dragons crossing the sky all day. I think they finally gave the beasties a bit of a rest. Remeshi came over as I was finishing up the milking. There’s no sign of Dursdan.

Mirana’s lungs trapped her breath. Dursdan! The events of the morning came pouring back to her. She pulled the blanket closer. Where was he?

Yamitra voiced her concern that they’d found nothing. It worries me that Aramel possesses that Gold Egg. I went through some of the books my Gran had given me. Part of the original pact with the dragons was that no Wizard would possess a dragon, especially a Gold.

Mirana was more worried about what the Wizard planned to do with Dursdan. The tears formed in her eyes. She couldn’t hold them back. They had to find him! Her dreams threatened to return.

Footsteps shuffled into the sitting room. The pungent smell stung Mirana’s nose. She gasped. The Wizard had come back for her! Someone touched her. She tried to pull away. No, don’t touch me!

The grip tightened. There now, child. Be still.

The voice was familiar. Mirana opened her eyes. Yamitra was sitting beside her on the ottoman. Mirana drew in deep gulps of air. Where is he?

Yamitra felt Mirana’s forehead and frowned. Calm yourself. You’re safe now.

Mirana drew up her legs and hugged her knees. Where is Dursdan? What has the Wizard done to him?

Yamitra gently wrapped her fingers around Mirana’s wrist. Your heart is racing. Breathe slower.

Mirana closed her eyes and concentrated on her breaths. She felt hot and cold at the same time. What’s wrong with me?

I can find no cause for your symptoms.

Kalista came into the room carrying a bowl. I’ve made some soup. She hasn’t had anything to eat all day. She should try.

Yamitra got out of the way so Kalista could sit on the stool next to the ottoman. Mirana, rest and eat what you can. I need to determine what else he put into the potion. I’m not sure if that is what is causing this or if it is shock. Give her time to recover, Kalista.

Her mother looked up at the healer. Thank you for checking on her. I’ll send Aber for you if she doesn’t improve. The elder left and Kalista held a spoonful of the soup to her mouth. Try a little.

Mirana dutifully slurped at the soup. It tasted odd on her tongue and made her cough. I’m sorry, Mum, I just can’t right now.

You need food to regain your strength. Come on, now. Try some more.

She felt too warm. The room seemed to be closing in on her. Mirana flung back the blanket and sat up. She struggled to breathe. I can’t! She got up and ran out of the room. The wooden floor of the kitchen was cold on her bare feet. The heat from the oven felt oppressive. She pushed through the back door and ran toward the barn. She climbed into the hayloft and dropped down into the hay.

The sobs shook her body. Mirana curled into a ball and let the tears flow. Gradually, the sounds from below filtered through. Pa was turning out the cows. It must be late. She could feel something angular under her. Mirana moved aside the hay and discovered the bag. She brushed it off and pulled out the book.

Her fingers traced the tooled design on the leather cover. Dursdan had given her the book. She held it close and rocked slowly through another batch of tears. She felt lost without Dursdan. What was she going to do? She had to get him back.

Footfalls on the ladder rungs warned her a moment before the lantern light spilled across the loft. Aber held the lantern up and looked around. He found her and came to her side. He set the lantern down on a clear patch of floor and made a comfortable spot in the hay next to her. Your Mum is plenty worried about you. It might help ease her mind a bit if you came in and ate a little.

Mirana wiped at the salty tracks on her face. I’m sorry, Pa. I tried. Nothing tastes right.

He put his arm around her. I know how that is. I still have a bit of berry leaf in a jar. The tea might clear the taste from your tongue so food is right again.

Mirana leaned against him and stared at the cover of the book in the flickering lantern light. What if they don’t find him?

Aber sighed deeply. My Pa always used to say, ‘Don’t fret a storm before a cloud appears on the horizon.’ You need to give them time to figure out what Aramel is up to. As long as I’ve known him, he’s never been a bad sort, maybe a little off. But I can’t see him doing harm to Dur.

Mirana didn’t know what to think. She slipped the book back into the bag and covered it with hay again. I suppose some berry leaf tea might help. She let him lead her out of the barn and back into the house.

Mirana managed to eat enough to please her mother then went up to her own room. Dreams haunted her all night. She woke disoriented, the dream images slipping away with the morning light. Her body was drenched in sweat. The blankets were twisted around her body trapping her in their grip.

She unwound from them and dressed. The sun was well up in the sky. The smell of fresh bread led her down to the kitchen.

Kalista was doing dishes. I’m still worried that something is amiss. I tried to wake you earlier and you didn’t even stir.

Mirana sank into a chair at the heavy kitchen table. It’s just the dreams. They won’t leave me alone.

Her mother wiped her hands on a towel. I kept some porridge warm for you. She dished it out and brought it to the table.

The back door flew open and Tambo stomped in. He stopped when he saw Mirana. Bout time you got up. He pointed at her but looked at their mother. Why does she get to sleep in and get out of morning chores?

Kalista frowned at him. She’s not well.

Mirana managed to swallow a bite of porridge. I’m sorry, Tambo. Since you did my morning milking, I’ll help Pa with the deliveries.

Well, all right. I really wanted to go fishing today.

Kalista made Mirana finish her breakfast before she let her out of the kitchen. Aber had already hitched the pullers to the wagon and was loading milk cans into the back when she came out. I’ll grab the last two. Mirana went into the creamery and hurried back with the milk cans.

Aber added them to the back and tossed the heavy tarp over them to keep them cool. Are you sure you feel well enough to be about?

Mirana climbed up onto the seat. I’ll be fine, Pa.

They began the rounds, dropping off milk to those who needed it. She watched the Winglings crossing the sky. Hopefully one of the dragons would find him.

They completed the rounds. One milk can remained. They went back through town and Aber headed for the Mercantile. I promised Marx I’d trade him some milk for some twine. It shouldn’t take me long. You can wait in the wagon if you want.

Mirana was fine with that. She felt tired even though Aber had done most of the work.

Makira came running out of the Mercantile. Mirana! Your Pa said you were here. She climbed up into the wagon and sat next to her. How are you?

She didn’t know what to say. She took Makira’s hand and squeezed it. I’ve been better. It must be hard for your family right now, too.

Makira sighed. Pa is beside himself. He saw the Wizard confront Dur in town. He feels he should have said something.

I don’t know that it would have made much of a difference. The dragons could hear Dur but couldn’t get to him in time. Mirana’s eyes filled with tears.

Makira put an arm around her shoulders. And you? Some say the Wizard put a spell on you.

Mirana covered her face. He used me as bait.

Makira did her best to comfort her. About the only good to come of all of this is that it has brought the House of Dan back together. Pa went to the Dan Homestead last night to talk to Uncle Remeshi. I don’t think they’ve spoken in a long time. Pa always favored Merg in any argument, especially after Uncle Torg died in the war.

    Makira, where are you?

Mirana looked up and waved at Danika, Makira’s younger sister. I’m sorry Dani, I’ve borrowed her for a moment.

Danika grinned. Well, I hope you’ve been gentle with her because Mum needs her back. She slipped back into the Mercantile.

Makira gave her a final squeeze. Dur is smart. If anyone can get away from the Wizard, it’s sure to be him. She climbed down and hurried inside.

Mirana closed her eyes and listened to the sounds of the people moving around her. Familiar voices caught her attention and she looked up. Conor, Steban, and Jacobi were passing by as they headed for the instrument shop. They looked tired and dirty. As they approached, Saldor came out of the shop and hailed them. He called back into the shop. Dalisha, bring food and water! They’ve come back. Then he turned to the boys. Did you find him?

Steban dropped his pack. We did but he wasn’t too happy about it.

Mirana’s heart leaped. She jumped down from the wagon and ran over to them. She could hardly believe it. You found him? Where is he? Is he all right?

Steban looked at her in confusion. Mirana? By the Shell!

Conor turned and gently grabbed her arm. No, we didn’t find Dursdan.

Mirana’s eyes filled with tears. Oh. I had hoped…

What is going on? Dalisha came out of the shop and shoved the food basket and water jug at her brother. She put her arm around Mirana. What has happened?

Saldor cleared his throat. I’m still trying to figure it out.

Steban shrugged. I think she thought we’d found Dursdan. He took a drink then handed the water jug to Conor and put his arm around Mirana from the other side. I’m sorry, Mirana, but that’s not who we were looking for. Not that we wouldn’t have been overjoyed if we’d found him.

Dalisha pushed her brother away. Go and eat. She hugged Mirana. Don’t mind them.

Saldor frowned. But you did find Terar?

Steban passed the food basket to Jacobi and bit into the roll. Aye, we found him. He’s still up in the same spot. I’ve told him what’s happened and he seems to know of it already. Something about the old Wizard being after Dur in the forest.

Mirana looked up. That was some days ago.

Steban glanced at her. How did you know that?

Dursdan told me he’d been looking for a steer that had gone off and he had to chase it all the way into the foothills. Aramel attacked him and demanded he hand over his egg.

So Terar told us. Steban took another bite of his roll. He’s had run ins with the old mage before and doesn’t care much for him. Terar whacked him good with his staff to get him off of Dur.

Mirana dried her eyes. Does he know where the Wizard lives?

Steban shook his head. He knows the foothills better than any but he’s never seen the Wizard’s Stronghold.

Mirana sagged and Dalisha hugged her tight. Don’t worry. They’ll find him.

Terar said he’d keep an eye out for him. Jacobi took the water jug and drank deeply. Dur is resourceful. He’ll find some way to slip away from the Wizard. Wait and see.

Mirana wiped the last of the tears away. I’m trying.

    Why are you so weepy?

Mirana jumped. She hadn’t heard Ashandra approaching. She turned and looked at the Lord’s daughter but said nothing.

Ashandra huffed. All your family lost was some dumb plants. I lost my intended.

Conor almost choked on the roll he was eating. You’re daft, girl. Dur wasn’t going to ask you. He was going to ask Mirana.

In the stunned silence, Mirana turned and looked at Conor. The set of his face spoke volumes.

Ashandra began to laugh. What a joke! Dursdan was a Lord’s son. Why would he have wanted a farmer’s daughter?

Mirana refused to look at her. She watched the anger play across Conor’s face and wondered what her own must look like at that moment.

Ashandra sighed. It’s a shame really. I heard my Ma talking with Lord Balashir. They’ve been searching everywhere and haven’t found a thing. He’s probably dead by now. Well, at least I still have Rashir. He wouldn’t even think of asking a farmer’s daughter.

Mirana felt something twist in her heart. She pulled out of Dalisha’s hold and turned to face Ashandra. You can’t have Rashir either. Your families are related.

Ashandra’s face went white then red. She scowled. Well no one in the Valley will want anything to do with you now that the Wizard has touched you. She turned abruptly and stalked away.

Mirana couldn’t breathe. What was Ashandra talking about? Had the Wizard done something more to her? She didn’t know. She could hear the boys talking about what she’d said to Ashandra.

Saldor scowled. Isn’t Royanda paying attention to her daughter?

Dalisha looked confused. Aunt Royanda? What do you mean, Pa?

Steban shook his head. It’s easy to forget that Rashir is our cousin.

Conor put down the water jug. What does that have to do with it?

Saldor glanced toward the retreating girl. My Mum is of the House of Aki. Royanda certainly knows that as well as I do.

Conor gasped. Shells, Ashandra has no luck at all.

Everyone was silent for a moment. The boys began to laugh. It startled Mirana back into awareness and she realized Dalisha had her arm around her again.

Conor managed to control his laughter and looked over at Mirana. Is everyone in the Valley related?

Mirana thought about the list of families in the book. Not yet but it’s getting close. Her voice sounded distant and she was grateful for Dalisha’s support. The world seemed to be spinning. She couldn’t get the fear out of her mind that the Wizard had done something more to her.

Ah, Saldor. Just the person I was looking for.

    Afternoon to you Aber.

Aber looked over at her. Mirana? Are you all right?

Mirana didn’t know what to say. She was spared by a shadow as a dragon flew over them. Everyone looked up as Itogan led the Winglings across the town toward the Keep.

Aber clicked his tongue. Marx says all the dragons have been out scouring the foothills and even into the mountains but there’s been no sign of him.

Jacobi nodded. We saw several pairs fly over while we were up there and even some farther in the distance.

Saldor put and arm on Aber’s shoulder. What can I do for you today, cousin?

Aber handed Saldor a piece of wood. I don’t suppose you need anything like this? The old tree lost a lot of branches. It seems a shame to just chop it up to burn. It would be better if something good could come of it.

Saldor held the piece of broken branch in his hand. We’ll have to see what’s under the bark. Why don’t you come into the shop?

The men went in and the boys concentrated on emptying the food basket. Dalisha pulled Mirana away. Sometimes you just need to walk.

Mirana let Dalisha pull her along. She wasn’t aware of anything they passed. She tried as hard as she could to remember anything that the Wizard had done but nothing surfaced.

Dalisha stopped walking and Mirana looked up. Dalisha was watching a boy unload a pile of hides at the leather shop. She looked closer. It was Shaval. He looked up from his work and waved. Dalisha waved back. Mirana noticed the hues rise in her cousin’s cheeks and smiled.

Dalisha giggled. He’s handsome, strong, and a hard worker. What do you think my Pa would say if he chose me? Then her face grew serious and she looked at Mirana. Oh, what if we’re related?

Mirana remembered her own fear when she realized what she’d discovered in the book and began looking at the families. I’m not sure of Shaval’s family lines but I can look them up.

    Dalisha looked confused. How?

Dursdan gave me his Great Gran Armia’s book. She had written down all the families of the Valley. I know how terrified I was when I started looking at Dursdan’s lines and comparing them to my own. I was relieved that we weren’t related. It was so close. Between us, there were only two Houses in the entire Valley that we weren’t related to.

Dalisha gripped her hand. Oh, what if we are related?

Mirana heard her name and turned to see her father standing by the wagon. I have to go but I promise I’ll check the match.

Dalisha gave her one final hug and let her go. Don’t mind the things that Ashandra says. She talks too much for her own good.

I’ll try not to. Mirana managed to give her cousin a reassuring smile then ran to the wagon.

Aber helped her up. Saldor says the wood from the tree might make good instruments. He climbed up onto the seat and took up the reins.

Mirana looked back at Saldor’s shop and waved at the boys. She saw Ashandra and her mother walking away from town in the direction
