Erin Denton received her PhD in sociology from McGill University, her MS in law, anthropology, and society from the London School of Economics and Political Science, and her MA in criminology from Simon Fraser University. Her work at the London School of Economics explores the sociological and technological framework of contemporary white power movements.
Since the late 1970s and early 1980s, conservative and right-wing political movements have burgeoned across the United States. Although these social/political movements are rooted right of center (along the liberal/moderate/conservative spectrum), there are various nuances and idiosyncrasies that define the groups and individuals that self-identify within the framework of conservative political movements. This article discusses the historical roots, factors, and societal elements that, in part, cultivated the emergence of these movements, including extreme right-wing and other rightist agendas. Additionally, this article discusses the overarching social and political goals and outcomes of conservative political movements.
In the aftermath of the Vietnam War (1954–1975), the United States underwent economic, political, and social changes that altered the trajectory of many facets of American life. This societal conversion led to the development of the New Right: a political movement embedded in conservative ideologies of public and politic (Blee and Creasap 2010). Experiencing unprecedented growth in the late 1970s and early 1980s, the New Right populist conservative movement sought, successfully, to
