    Jesse was born in the Central Valley of California.  At a young age, he learned of survival in the west and developed his imagination.  He would follow trails of wildlife and spend his time imagining the old west.  Getting an education was not at the top of Jesse’s thinking and he paid the price for it many times in the future.  Through the years of dreaming of a different life, Jesse was able to break that path and move on to figuring out that he had a natural gift for art and taught himself sculpting.  Sculpting spurred his imagination, which led to writing down those stories which he had been keeping in the back of his mind.  The future is just now starting anew for Jesse.

      Fairies of the Mississippi Deltaland - Jesse Beard

      Prologue

      Young lovers often feel misunderstood, and the lovers in this story were no exception.  He was seventeen, she was sixteen, and they were growing up—perhaps a bit too fast—in central Arkansas.  Maybe they hadn’t made the best choices, but that was not unique to Arkansas.  It happened everywhere.  Their story begins the same as many others, but the path they traveled was different from any you’ve read about before.  It was so different, in fact, that it might be hard to believe.  Because they were young, we’ll protect their identities.  We won’t use their real names; let’s call them Billy and Sandy.

      Chapter 1

      Billy had an old car with big wheels in the back and a broken-down stereo system.  When he could get the car to run and make the stereo work, Billy and Sandy drove around the outskirts of town and listened to country music.  They’d been sneaking out together for months, trying to avoid their families and the God-fearing people in that cradle of the Bible belt.  Sandy was expecting a baby, and she was far enough along that everybody knew it.  Their families were mortified.  The pregnancy was unplanned, but, after all, these kids were in love and they couldn’t have resisted each other.  At least, that’s how they saw it.  They had plans to run away together, maybe start a new life.  They’d set their sights on Tennessee, mostly because it was only a couple of hours away—close enough to home, but not too close.

      They were soon to be parents, and figured they were ready to go their own way.  It was hard to leave family behind, but they were willing to give up anything and everything so they could raise their baby together and be a real family of their own.

      Are you ready for this? Billy asked Sandy.  Tennessee feels a long ways away, now that we’re really going.

      I’m going to miss my mother, she said nervously.

      He took her hand.  I’ll take care of you.

      She squeezed his hand in hers and laid her head on his shoulder.

      It’s lucky that I have those friends over by Memphis, he said.  "We’ll stay with them until we can rent a house.  He kissed her on the cheek then opened the car door.  She slid in and buckled the safety belt over her swollen belly.  He slid in too and fired up the worn out car.  Smoke belched out the tailpipe, which was barely hanging on.  He put it in gear, then the engine died. 

      Sandy reached down and squeezed Billy’s thigh.  Try it again, she said patiently.  He cranked it a few more times.  Finally, it caught.  They had a full tank of gas, a few dollars in his pocket,
