    GREED

    ––––––––

Lana stood on the balcony overlooking the city and let the warm rain wash over her as she contemplated going back inside or getting a room somewhere else for the night. After several minutes of watching the bright lights of her and Brad’s apartment through the streaks of rain and hearing the crude jokes and laughter from those inside, she thought maybe she was leaning towards the room and a new boyfriend. It definitely wasn’t the first time in the past few months together that he had gone out drinking alone only to come home with several strangers who, once the bars closed down, needed a crib to party in.

Crib’ was his new word for the night, courtesy of his so-called new friends. This was only one of many not so nice additions to her soon-to-be-ex-asshole’s vocabulary.

Ménage, gang-bang and open relationship had been just a few of the others.

Not that she would have been totally opposed to the first, or even the latter, but that discussion wasn’t one to have when some barely-clothed tramp was eyeballing him from her perch on his lap and Lana’s normally jealous-as-all-hell boyfriend was offering to trade her for a night of fun with the skank. True, he was drunk, but that only got you so far and when that was the only state he ever really seemed to be in lately, it was also lame.

It was time for a quick exit strategy.

Lana took a single deep breath and moved back inside, dodging around the group lounging on the furniture in the small living room while avoiding both roaming hands and the disgusting leers as she passed. Getting to the bedroom, she rolled her eyes when she saw Brad with the skank pushed up hard against the wall. His tongue was down her throat and her skirt had been hiked up around her hips as Brad’s hands fumbled between her legs.

Lana grit her teeth before grabbing her purse from the bedside table before and heading back out again, doubting he had even seen her.

Of all the stupid, rotted out choices she had ever made, this one topped the cake, she thought silently.

    New Beginnings

So what would you think about dinner and a movie on our next night off? Lana looked up from her place at the nurse's station long enough to eye the new doctor beside her. This was the guy’s first night, and her first real chance to talk to him since her shift had begun several hours ago. She rolled her eyes before moving back to the large stack of paperwork before them.

    No thanks, she replied politely.

You sure? I think we could have a lot of fun together Lani... who knows it could even be Kismet! he chuckled and she smiled politely, knowing from experience arguing only made them more determined.

It’s Lana, she corrected once, knowing it was futile.

Of course, of course, just my little pet name for you, you know... he winked and she fought the urge to be sick.

Is it that guy? he asked after a long silence had passed. The one who stopped by to see you earlier? he clarified.

Someone came to see me? Lana asked, confused. The only person who knew she was working at this new job had been Brad, but she thought she had made things clear when he had finally tracked her down
