About this ebook

Sick of the same day in, day out, soul-sucking job, Giles Noft decides it's time for a change. Starting a new career as a voice actor with Voce Audio, he realizes it's also the perfect opportunity to narrate his own published book after hours.

Renting studio space in the evenings, Giles plans to have his book finished in a couple weeks. What he didn't expect was to find a companion while in the recording studio, or for that companion to completely turn his world and his future upside down.

A chance and seemingly impossible encounter with Giselle Renard changes his entire life. Armed with new information, Giles starts planning for a tomorrow no one knows is coming. Their fast friendship leads to more, but "The End" is closing in. And although neither want their time in the studio to be over, they know there is no way they can avoid the cold, hard reality of what has been, and what is to be.

    Giselle - Linda Mooney

    Chapter One

    Prospect

Moses was already waiting for him at the bar when Giles walked in. The part-time bodyguard was hard to miss, even in the subdued lighting. Giles noticed the big man had taken a seat where he could keep an eye on the door. Also that it was a location where his back was to the wall. Even when the man was off the clock, he played it safe.

Shaking the raindrops off his lightweight jacket, Giles took the stool on the man’s left.

What’ll you have? the bartender inquired.

    Bourbon and Coke, straight.

    You got it.

While his drink was being made, Giles reached for some of the peanuts in the bowl between them. How’s it going?

It’s pissing outside, and you ask me how it’s going? His friend tossed back another swallow of his beer and belched. From the expression on his friend’s face, Giles figured the word of the day was morose.

    That good, eh?

    Could be worse.

His drink arrived. Giles dropped a sawbuck on the bar, which was whisked away.

I was surprised to hear from you, Moses continued, giving him a curious eye as he drained the bottle, then gestured for a repeat.

Well, we haven’t seen each other in a while. I thought it would be good to catch up. See what the other one had on their plate.

Moses grunted. Sounds like we’re both having a pissy day. You go first.

Giles sipped his drink and winced. He didn’t really like bourbon and Coke, but for some reason he never ordered anything else. Guess deep down inside he figured that if he detested the taste, he’d be less likely to overdo it.

I dropped my agent and told Nodding House I wasn’t doing any more of those sleazy documentaries.

Moses’ eyes widened. Okay, the documentaries I can understand, but why’d you ditch your agent?

Because he refused to consider anything else. I told him I was tired of that stupid, conspiratorial pabulum the company was spouting. I mean, every single job was the same inane junk. Week after week. Month after month. It was getting to the point where I could almost recite the scripts word for word in my sleep.

But it was a steady paying gig, his friend pointed out.

For the cost of my soul. I needed something fresh.

So what are your plans now?

Giles peeled his glass off the napkin and took another swig. The liquid went down like burnt prune juice. I’m going to narrate books.

    No shit? Whose books?

For starters, mine. There’s a start-up company here in town, called Voce Audio. I applied for a job as a voice actor, and they had me come in yesterday to audition.

    And?

    And I got the job.

That’s great! Moses slapped him on the back in a congratulatory gesture, then paused. Wait. You wrote a book?

Glancing sideways at the man, Giles grinned lopsidedly. Yeah.

What’s it about? What kind of book?

Promise not to rib me? It’s a romance.

Moses almost spewed his mouthful of beer. A romance? Seriously?

Why not? The romance genre is a billion-dollar-a-year industry. I thought I’d give it a try. Something to do in my off time. Nothing serious. Just testing the waters.

I didn’t know you were writing a book, the big man commented. Snorting, he added, Didn’t know you had a book in you.

Giles shrugged. Neither did I. Worked on it on and off for over a year. Ever since Dara and I called it quits. At Moses’ inquisitive stare, he chuckled. Go ahead. Call me a romantic at heart.

Hey, no, man. If that’s your thing, more power to you. If it were me, I’d do some kind of military fiction, or some such shit.

After I finished it, I paid Raymand over at Nodding House to edit it. He also formatted it for me, so I could self-publish it.

Turning to face his friend, Moses laid an arm over the back of his stool, waggling his longneck in his other hand. You got me curious. What’s this book about?

It’s futuristic. Post-apocalyptic. It’s about a group of people who were caught in a subway train when the city was bombed to the max. They managed to survive and dig themselves out. Half of them decided to stay underground, because they feared another bombing. The other half remained on the surface, hoping to rebuild their lives. The hero is one of those who remained below, and the heroine is from the surface.

Who are the bad guys? Gotta have bad guys in it.

    Other survivors.

Hmm. Sounds interesting. Getting any sales?

Actually, more than I anticipated, Giles admitted.

    So what’s the problem?

I want to convert it into an audio book, preferably using the equipment over at the new job, but I haven’t worked up the courage yet to approach them about it. Sighing, Giles took another swallow.

    Why an audio book?

Why not? It’s another format, like the eBook and print. If it sells, great. If it doesn’t, lesson learned. No harm, no foul.

Well, I wouldn’t bring it up, if I were you, Moses suggested. Not right out of the gate. Give it some time. Maybe later on you can check into it, after you’ve clocked in some time. Is this new job a full-time gig?

Hope so. Right now, it’s spotty, but that’s to be expected for a new company. I’ve had a couple of jobs. Commercials. They pay decently.

Moses grunted. "Doesn’t sound like you got anything to gripe about.
