CHAPTER 1:
YOU ARE WHAT YOU THINK YOU ARE
T hree thousand years ago, King Solomon wrote by the inspiration of God, For as he thinks within himself, so he is
. When Jesus Christ walked this earth, He said, Out of the overflow of his heart, his mouth speaks
(Luke 6:45). So our minds, our thoughts are very important because they influence our speech and our actions. It is our thinking that makes us what we are. So what fills our thoughts and minds most and what influences our thoughts most? These are the questions we need to ask ourselves:
WHAT/ WHO CAN INFLUENCE OUR THINKING?
1. The Family
What were our parents’ attitudes towards us? Did they ever say, ‘You’re no good! You’re a failure. You’re just like your mother/father’? Often, our parents say things out of frustration, little realizing the continuing effects their words have upon us their children.
Thanks be to God that by the power of the Holy Spirit we can be set free from the effects of these words for otherwise they can become a curse on us and we may never reach our full potential. In Christ Jesus we can do all things through Him that strengthens us.
2. Unbelieving Friends
These friends can affect our thinking and thought patterns. They may tell us that being a Christian is okay but that we must not be too committed or too zealous for then we might become fanatical. Let’s see what the Bible has to say about this.
Revelations 3:15-16: I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.
3. The World
The world influences our thinking through books, magazines, newspapers, music and television. Ladies, soap operas are not reality. The message they send you is that your man must be six feet tall, with a body built like Mr. Universe, he must be romantic 365 days in the year—and it’s all right if he’s not a Christian!
The Bible’s message is this:
2 Corinthians 6:14-15 Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? What harmony is there between Christ and Belial?
What does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? The best man for you is GOD’S BEST, not the world’s. Seek first the Kingdom of God and all these things will be added unto you—including the right man.
4. Our Culture
Culture affects our thinking. Asian culture especially as many Asian religions contain a lot of superstitions. The result is that believers have many fears and the Word of God clearly tells us that Christians should not live in fear, they should live by faith. When we are born again by the Spirit of God, fear is replaced by faith. Thus we must cut ourselves off from superstitious fears. For example, Feng Shui should have no place in a Christian’s life. Reading our horoscope is a definite no-no. Only God knows our future. That is why we must keep ourselves in His Word.
2 Timothy 1:7 For God hath not given us the Spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
5. Our Past Experiences
Our past experiences can shape and control our present and our future without our realizing it. For instance, we may have experienced a bad relationship with a man. This may cause us to fear entering into another relationship because we think all men are the same—which is far from the truth.
We may also have made a mistake at our place of work resulting in our being embarrassed or humiliated. Then, for fear of repeating the mistake, we choose to stick to what we know. We choose to play safe and not attempt to advance in our career. We thus never achieve our highest potential.
Philippians 3:13 & 14 Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
This is something we must remember:
It is THE WORD that has to change our thinking.
It is THE WORD that must influence our thinking daily.
WHY DO WE NEED TO CHANGE OUR THINKING?
1. We need to do this because accordingly to Proverbs 23:7, ‘We become who we think we are’.
Think ‘failure’ and we fail.
Think ‘sick’ and we become sick.
Think ‘no money’ and we’ll get no money.
Think ‘problems’ and we’ll always have problems.
Think ‘fear’ and ‘worry’ and there’ll be no peace always.
And so the list goes on… .
We need to change our thinking because we want to be successful, victorious Christian men and women. We want to be able to rise and conquer. To do this, we need to think ‘faith and ‘victory’. We need to hold on to God’s promise that we are more than conquerors through Christ Jesus.
2. We need to change our thinking because the Word tells us to.
Romans 12:2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
‘Be transformed’ in the original text is in the present continuous tense. This means we must be continually transformed by the renewing of our minds. It is a daily process. The negative, old way of thinking must go and be replaced by God’s Word—which are faith-filled words.
3. We need to change our thinking so we can have minds filled with life and peace.
Romans 8:6 For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is LIFE AND PEACE
What does being carnally-minded mean? It means being influenced by what we see, hear and feel instead of being influenced by the Holy Spirit through God’s Word. For example, a carnally-minded person, when out of a job, will think like the world does: I have no money, no security, no future.
A spiritually-minded person, however, will ask: What does the Word say?
It says, Jehovah Jireh is my Provider.
Matthew 6:25-26 Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?
As we meditate on God’s Word, it changes our thinking. Through God’s Word we will have life and peace.
4. We need to change our thinking so we can influence others.
As we allow the Word of God to change our negative thoughts, our speech will change and our actions will change too. The ‘I’ will change and people will see the difference.
1 Peter 3:1-4 Wives, in the same way be submissive to your husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.
We will have a gentle and quiet spirit if our thoughts are in line with the Word of God.
HOW DO WE CHANGE OUR THINKING?
1. Have a Yielded Mind
Desire to do the will of God—by abiding in Christ. Every day, submit ourselves to God and this includes submitting our minds. When we are fully yielded to God, we will have the power of the Holy Spirit to think victorious thoughts and live victorious lives.
John 15:4 Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.
2. Have a Set Mind
Colossians 3:2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.
Love heavenly things and be engrossed by them. Don’t become engrossed with problems, problems, problems.
3. Have a Renewed Mind
Romans 12:2 Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.
How do we renew our minds? Read, meditate, memorize and confess the Word.
Joshua 1:8 Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.
Pray in the Holy Spirit to build up our inner man and to break the curse of words over us. Praying in the Holy Spirit makes us more sensitive to God speaking to us through His Word.
4. Have a Steadfast Mind
Isaiah 26: 3,4 You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in you. Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD, the LORD, is the Rock eternal.
JEHOVAH (THE LORD) is the ROCK of ages, the undefeatable one, the Eternal Strong One. It is He who will keep us in perfect peace, without worry, fear or doubts.
5. Have a Disciplined
