About this ebook

A. K. Hasan defies the senseless belief that aspiring leaders must go along to get along. The premise that aspiring leaders must join the herd is a ridiculous one to employ.
Hasan says, It is the belief in the herd mentality that has stymied and undermined the development of strong leadership in our country and the world. He then asks, How far do you expect to advance in life by sacrificing you beliefs, ideals, and principles to conform to those of an individual or group?
If you are an aspiring leader of your life, your business, in education, or in politics, Gladiator Leaders: Dont Drink the Laced Drink is a must-read for you.
There is an ongoing argument that leaders are born not made. Hasan believes that leaders are both born and made. Individuals properly trained can be above-average and even great leaders.
However, internal motivation and personal commitment to some ideals and principles are necessary for both groups of aspiring leaders. As the saying goes, If you dont stand for something, you will fall for anything.
Standing for something often requires sacrifice and courage. Gladiator Leaders: Dont Drink the Laced Drink will inspire you and sharpen your leadership skills. This will enable you to measure your commitment to personal achievement and inspire you to be courageous.
I hope you enjoy reading my book.

A.K Hasan

A. K. Hasan is a leadership anomaly. His “Unconform” approach to leadership led to his election to a school board at twenty-six years old. He was the youngest person ever elected to serve on that board. At twenty-seven, he was elected president of the board. He was the first African American elected and youngest ever to serve as president. Hasan was later elected to a city council. After sixteen years outside politics and the limelight, he reemerged and was elected to a one-year term on the school board. Prior to Hasan being elected to public office, he navigated a number of obstacles as a community activist. He emerged as the key community spokesperson against and later for magnet schools. He remains an avid advocate for magnet schools to this day. Each of the three magnet schools Hasan helped to create has earned a number-one ranking among magnet schools in the United States. Hasan is a lifelong resident of Augusta-Richmond County, Georgia. This is his first book. I hope you enjoy reading my book. Contact: A. K. About the Author

    Acknowledgments

To my devoted son, Aqeel, for becoming a most accomplished aspirant as a husband, father, leader in industry, and master of academia—all of which commands my admiration and love. To my daughter-in-law, Annie Lee, who is truly gifted and special; we are blessed with you, and you two are excellent parents. To my three granddaughters, who are so beautiful. Their minds are so keen and their maturity is astounding. Thanks, Aqeel, for being a remarkable son. I love you guys!

To my brother, Ben Hasan, who is a champion of what matters in life. Your protection during my youthful years and your introduction of higher ideals, principles, and beliefs into my life strengthened the bond between us for all eternity. Your shields of protection, wisdom, and foresight are most appreciated. I love you. I salute my wonderful sister-in-law, Hadiyah, and my nieces and nephews.

Most importantly, I thank Almighty God and duly salute my God-given mother, Ms. Cora Lee Gray. She is courageous and has wonderful intuitive vision. At the age of thirteen, having lost her mother to a massive heart attack, Mom made decisions that far exceeded her age. A few years later, her choice to leave her two baby boys in the care of the Wiggins family proved wise. While living and working in Brooklyn, New York, Mom maintained contact with us and sent and brought provisions to us throughout the years. Ben and I had wonderful annual school shopping sprees and Christmas and Easter celebrations. Although her health has been declining for a number of years, my mother’s spirits remain high, and we share our heartiest laughs together. I love you, Mom. You are so fun!

I truly thank Almighty God for my parents, Willie and Alice Wiggins (not blood relations), who raised me and Ben from an infant and a toddler to grown men. Their love for us was so devoted that each of their five children—Ella, Joann, Billy, Mary, and Vivian—embraced us as their brothers and never wavered from that. Our sister Mary is the lone survival of the Wiggins, and we remain devoted to each other. I love you, Ninnie.

The Glorious Impact Award goes to my grandmother, Ruth Banks; her sister, my great-aunt, Julia Hankerson (deceased); and my Aunt Zelmon. They worked in unison to actively support my goals without fail over the years. Their trifecta of love is literally humbling. Their lineage is a trifecta of matriarchs nestled atop the family tree that yielded my birthfather, George Turner. My dad, George, and his lovely wife, Arnita (Nita), have seven grown children; their children are but a fraction of my many brothers and sisters. Our blood relation is a knot that can’t be untied. I heartily extend my love and affection to all my brothers and sisters.

Special recognition goes to Imam Warith Deen Mohammed, the late leader of the American Society of Muslims, for his inspirational and instructive teachings on human development and its applications, and on our responsibilities to both creation and creator. Farewell, my beloved brother.

The Special Appreciation Award goes to Thales Elliott, my friend and former school board colleague. He was undoubtedly the glue that bonded my efforts to become president of the school board. His faith in my leadership abilities was monumental.

In memory of H. E. (Herb) Beckman, who was my friend, my political mentor, and my inseparable colleague. His knowledge and wit formed a craftiness that was shockingly precise and that knocked most listeners off-balance. Herb helped my transition from a naïve political neophyte into a political strategist.

In memory of Mrs. Kingsley Riley, a retired teacher and school board colleague that embraced me as her own. She would frequently say at public engagements, You all call him Hasan. I says, ‘He’s my son.’ Mrs. Riley’s motherly protections and advice created a shield of protection around me that few would dare try to penetrate and exploit. Mrs. Riley (Mom) was a great friend and ally.

In memory of B. J. Annis, who was a Senior Conservative Member of the School Board. Her assistance with my election to the board and her friendship with
