Gizmo's Land - Mauricia Errera
Chapter 1
THE JOURNEY BEGINS
T he smell of newly cut lawn, tickled my senses as I lay on the soft green grass enjoying the warmth of the sun filtering through the leaves of the old oak tree. The day was lazy, the air hot and humid, sleepily I watched the sunlight as it danced off the lake surface like twinkling stars. While in the distance one could hear the rumbling of thunder, bringing with it the promise of rain.
Gizmo, my beloved pet cat lay curled up next to me on the grass blissfully asleep, oblivious to the chirping birds and approaching storm. As I lay watching him through sleepy eyes, he awoke, looked at me, then stretched his slim feline body longer and longer, until he was as long as he could be. Sitting up he began cleaning himself, paying special attention to his face. He didn’t like being dirty. Putting both front paws on my lap as if in greeting, he winked at me yawning playfully, his sleepy eyes sparkling with mischief.
It was about then that I noticed a strangeness about him, something had changed and Gizmo was at the center of it. I stared in amazement as a golden glow seemed to spread from his head to the tip of his long tail. I too, started feeling strange, as though I was gently vibrating inside, the same golden glow started enveloping my body. It seemed to be flowing from Gizmo covering every inch of my form.
Giz, what’s happening?
I exclaimed, sitting up, lifting my hands to my face, twisting them in all directions, inspecting the golden glow which had engulfed them.
There’s magic in the air—can you feel it?
he said with a mischievous look on his face. It’s as though a vibration crawls right into the center of your chest and tickles down your spine,
he closed his eyes dramatically.
I too closed my eyes to better enhance the feeling of the magic
. A feeling of excitement arose within me, my heart felt as though it was about to jump right out of my chest. Upon opening my eyes I noticed Gizmo watching me, he had a strange look on his face. I giggled as he had such a theatrical smile which showed off his tiny sharp white teeth. Before I realized what had happened his nose had touched mine emitting a blinding flash of light, causing me to close my eyes against the glare.
On opening my eyes I found the world around me had changed dramatically, we were in a strange world.
Gizmo, where have you taken me? I don’t know this place!
My first thought was how were we to find our way back home?
We have been here many times in the past,
was all that Gizmo answered.
Sitting on a soft carpet of green grass, I noticed a long path in front of me leading to the horizon, with oak trees lining both sides of the path, forming a long green tunnel. Just beyond the trees on either side, were fields of flowers and beyond were more trees. Standing up I looked around, my fear subsided, this place was somehow familiar. It reminded me of an enchanted forest, here everything was bigger—or maybe I had shrunk in size. There were flowers the size of small coins and others as large as dinner plates, in every colour imaginable.
I crouched automatically as I heard a loud flapping sound, looking in the direction of the sound I saw a bird, which was larger than a vulture, which had come to rest amongst the flowers. I heard a buzzing sound, this time I stood my ground and did not give way, it was an enormous dragonfly as large as a kitten. Mesmerized by the beautiful pastel colours of it’s wings, I watched as it flew past us disappearing from sight.
I saw large colourful butterflies with beautiful patterns on their wings and bees larger than bumble bees, as they danced from blossom to blossom. Brightly colored chirping birds flew through the branches swooping low over our heads, as their larger cousins, the size of turkeys hopped light footedly through the flowers, then with the mighty rush of their large wings they flew off into the air vanishing into the distance.
Come along. Hurry,
Gizmo said sprinting and dancing along the path, urging me on, he seemed to be very comfortable in this world.
I become aware of a voice calling me, Hello there… !
It was a tiny squeaky voice which sounded as though it came from far away. Cocking my head at the same time holding my breath, I listened intently.
Hello… over here!
It said again. Looking down at my left sleeve, I was met with the most curious sight. It was a small green caterpillar no longer than my middle finger and fatter than my thumb, puffing and struggling to climb a little higher up the trunk of the tree that he may be heard.
Never had I seen such a strange looking caterpillar. He was lime green, and from head to tail were large black spots with red centers, embellishing both sides of his body, he wore white gloves on hands which were attached to his first six limbs. Perched upon his nose in a comical fashion were wire rimmed glasses, obviously he was the studious type.
Oh, hello there,
I said to the strange little creature who seemed terribly out of breath from his climbing ordeal.
Oh, oh, whew… ye heard me,
he sighed. I was taken by surprise for I did not know there were caterpillars who could converse in a Scottish accent. If it pleases ye, won’t ye give me a hand up then, Miss Giant? As me voice does not do very well screaming from down here, ye know, I have recently scrambled up a very high tree,
he panted. I held my hand out for him to climb on to my finger lifting him easily to the level of my face. He was smiling, a big broad grin which stretched right across his face.
So where are ye rushing off to then?
he enquired in his bonny accent.
I don’t quite know yet, for I have only just arrived,
I replied.
Please, may I tag along, this life is becoming awfully boring?
pleaded the caterpillar.
Out the corner of my eye I noted Gizmo flick his tail from side to side muttering under his breath. He was becoming very agitated at the delay. He was so impatient sometimes, only he knew why he was always in such a hurry.
"Sure, why not. Well come
