Vincent’S Secret Plan - Shan Laks

    CHAPTER 1

    VINCENT’S SECRET PLAN

Vincent Bear moaned, ‘Cleaning my teeth is boring! It takes away from my computer game and TV time.’ His bottom lip pouted and his screwball eyes looked left and right to see where his mother was.

Vincent Bear stood up and kicked the mat hard. ‘I need more time …’

Olli, the pet parakeet, fluffed his feathers inside his cage. ‘Awk! No!’ Olli squawked.

‘Don’t stare at me like an owl, Olli!’ Vincent scrunched his face up. His mop-like hair always made him look like a circus clown. ‘I’m tired of Mum nagging me all the time. Clean your teeth, Vin-c-e-nt! I just want to play games!’

Olli shook head. ‘Sometimes you are a bad boy, Vinnie!’

Vincent walked out of the dining room and slumped on the front doorstep. He put his head down and scratched the concrete with a stick. He drew in a long deep breath. Vincent was planning something.

‘I know what to do!’ He jumped up. ‘I’ve got it!’ he exclaimed. ‘Why bother cleaning my teeth? Nobody will know! I hate the smell of toothpaste and the bristles torture my gums! I will save myself from all that. I will have TV and computer time. How clever is that?’ He moved with speed.

Grinning and nodding, Vincent marched towards the living room to play games. When he got to the bathroom door, he stopped. His heart thudded; then he ducked and ran past the open door.

‘I don’t think Tock, the toothbrush, and Col, the toothpaste, saw me,’ he said.

He played computer games and watched TV until late. ‘I think I’m ready for bed,’ he said as he rubbed his eyes, yawned, and turned the TV off.

As he walked back to his bedroom, he felt guilty. He stepped into the bathroom, waved, and said, ‘Sorry, toothbrush and toothpaste. I’m really sleepy, so I will clean my teeth tomorrow.’ He yawned.

When morning came, he went into the bathroom again. ‘I’m late for school. I promise, I will clean the teeth tonight!’ he waved his finger.

‘It worked! I’m smart!’ Vincent threw his fists up. He was filled with pride, but after a few days, the other boys and girls began to move away from him, because his breath smelt badly. When he talked and laughed with friends, he puffed bad breath in their faces. They stopped sharing desks with him.

Vincent did not try to find out why.

Mrs Bear didn’t know what was going on, because she was very busy working on her laundry business from home. She washed and ironed from morning until night and then delivered people’s clean clothes to them.

She also cooked and cleaned for the family, because Vincent’s father was away most of the time.

Mr Bear was a bus driver who came home late most nights. Sometimes he had last-minute calls for long trips. It was tough!

    Mrs Bear thought
