THE RURAL IDYLL
Westhampton to the passing public must have seemed a rural idyll. But behind the scenes there were problems. The high street Banks had long since left Westhampton a branch in Westhampton was considered not commercially viable. Residents in Westhampton either used internet banking or had to make the journey into the nearest large town for their Bank. The locals all had to have their own transport. There was a bus. But even that only passed through Westhampton to its destination.
Fred like most of the old farming stock was worried at the number of people who came to live in the village, but still commute to their work in the Town. The local young people were being priced out of the village. Most people did their shopping on their way home from the large town at the nearest out of town supermarket. The village store was only for things you had forgotten to buy. The village had a Farmer’s market once per week to try to keep the village going.
Robert was worried about Gustav’s gold rolex wristwatch not only was the watch gold, but it had a gold bracelet. Robert was concerned that Gustav would be attacked and have the watch stolen. When he raised the subject with Gustav. Gustav explained that it was not just for show the watch had sentimental reasons for Gustav. He took his watch off and handed it to Robert, who turned the watch over and there engraved on the back was Gustav Der Wirtschaftsprufer Vati und Mutti
Gustav the accountant from Dad and Mom. It represented a lot of hard work and study. So Gustav was reluctant to take it off. Robert understood so he no longer raised the subject.
The villagers saw the big black Daimler and thought it was brand new but the Rothenburgs were frugal with their money. Heinrich the Chauffeur had seen the car for sale on the website in Koblenz and He had persuaded Helmut and Gustav that the Daimler was worth buying. It was second hand. But it was a bargain it had low mileage and it was quality. It was the love of Hein rich’s life.
Robert was determined to let the locals see the real Gustav to come to know the man behind the nickname. To find out that Gustav was a kind and generous person and not the arrogant and aloof Kaiser they thought He was. Robert wanted them to come to know the shy young man. He knew and loved.
Rev Jeremy Browne came to the Manor early in the year with Gloria they had an appointment with Hildegard. They came in Rev Browne’s car, which he parked in one of the reserved spaces and they knocked at the large front door. It was opened as usual by Gerhardt. He led them straight into the drawing room. And ushered them to sit down in the red chesterfield furniture. While he went and told them He was going to let Hildegard know that they had arrived. After a few minutes the door was opened by Hildegard. She warmly shook both their hands and asked what she could do for them and what was the reason for their visit. Rev Browne explained that the present Chairwoman of the Women’s institute was standing down and they were seeking a replacement and Gloria had suggested you Hildegard. Gloria would help her as the secretary. Gloria said Hildegard you a strong willed person, who does not let things get out of hand. I mean that as a compliment.
She said. Hildegard laughed and said that she understood what Gloria meant. Yes together Gloria and her would be a formidable team. Yes she would accept the honour of being Chairwoman of St Mark’s Women’s Institute. Then She rang for Gerhardt to bring in Tea., Coffee and biscuits to celebrate. Rev Browne was pleased that Hildegard had accepted. When She told Helmut and Gustav about her appointment. Gustav was quiet for a moment and then burst out laughing they do not know what they have let themselves in for. Well done Mutti
He embraced his Mother and kissed her. She jokingly replied Cheeky beggar
before both Helmut and Herself burst into laughter. But Gustav was right his Mother did not suffer fools gladly. She was a tough old matriarch. And She would make sure things got done
Gloria suggested that instead of holding the meetings in St Mark’s Church Hall. They could come to the Manor to make it easier for Hildegard. The real reason was that the members wanted a excuse to visit the Manor. Hildegard was aware of that, but the arrangement suited her as well. So once a month they met in the drawing room at the Manor. Hildegard had Helga make some cakes for them She may not have been in the same class as Gloria, but Helga the Rothenburg’s cook was no mean cake maker. Gloria complimented her on her homemade cakes.
HEINRICH MUST GO
Gustav’s rural idyll was shattered one Sunday morning at Morning Worship at St Marks. Rev Browne mentioned how they were having a charity toy auction for charity. He had been rummaging in his attic and had found his old Teddy bear which he was donating to the cause. He said people might find it usual for an adult to still have his Teddy Bear. Hildegard looked at Gustav and quietly said to him no I would not.
Rev Browne hoped members of the congregation would donate toys also.
When Hildegard was thanking Rev Browne for his service. She Said that the family would have a look at the Manor for any old toys to donate won’t we Gustav.
Gustav shook the Vicar’s hand and said yes of course.
The family went over to the Red Lion for their usual Sunday Lunch. Robert had reserved a table for them. Helmut, Hildegard and Gustav joined Robert at the table.
They ordered the Roast beef with all the trimmings as usual. While they were eating their meals. Hildegard said to Gustav Heinrich has to go!
Gustav played his not following you card. But who will drive the Car?
Hildegard said "Don’t try your
