    Grey Wolf

    By Ian Proctor

As grey wolf sat in the shade of the giant beech tree on that warm summer evening he thought of what he had lost. For his lovely wife, his precious moonbeam had been taken from him and he had been forced to live his life of an outcast. Cut off from the Apache tribe that he had served so very faithfully for so long.

It just happened that he had been hunting deer in the forest one morning when a young Indian maiden had happened to be passing carrying two buckets filled with water. As she drew level with him her foot caught in the root of a tree and she had fallen rather heavily onto her side losing all her water.

Naturally seeing her plight he had run to her and putting an arm under each arm pit had gently lifted her up to a sitting position. Supporting her with one arm he quickly took a water bottle from around his waist, uncorked the top with his teeth and gently sprinkled it onto her face until she began to come around.

After a while her eye lids started to flutter open and a faint smile appeared on her lips. Delighted at this Grey Wolf told her to open her mouth whilst he gently eased some water down her throat. This seemed to do a world of good for after a few minutes she was able to get up unaided.

Fastening the bottle back onto his waist after putting the stopper back on, he looked around and saw two buckets lying on their side on the ground needing attention. Picking them up, he ran down to the river. Filled them up, carried them back and put them down in front of her.

She smiled at him before he could stop her, ran up to him, put her arm around his neck and kissed him. Embarrassed by her impulsive action he was never the less grateful that she was.

He waited until it was getting dark as he did not want to be seen, getting up he set off at a brisk trot keeping to the cover of the trees so he would not be seen. After about three miles, he came to a shelter of teepee set out in a big open plain.

Pausing in the shadows to make sure that no one could identify him, he looked in both directions but he could see no one. Straining his ears for the slightest, he moved steadily forward keeping in the shadow of the trees.

He had only gone a few yards when a shaft of moonlight caught him full the face illuminating up his whole body very clearly. He stood petrified for a moment not knowing what to do and very frightened in case anyone had seen him. His legs were like jelly and his heart was beating like a drum.

The trickle of sweat that ran down from his forehead jerked him back to reality. He straightened himself up and ran round the back of a large oak tree and flattened himself against it. He remained motionless for several months before he was finally convinced that no one had seen him or heard him and that the way was clear.

He crept forward on tiptoe to a teepee that was set aside on the far side of the plain. When he was level with it, he left the cover of the trees and crept very silently towards it. Pausing at the flap entrance he stood listening for a moment to see if anyone had been talking to his parents. He could hear no one.

Putting both his hands on the flap, he eased it gently open and looked inside. He could see no one except the two bodies that lay side by side in the blanket that covered them. He crept over to where his mother lay sleeping and shook her very gently.

She stirred, opened her eyes and saw the dark figure standing over her. She opened her mouth to scream but he quickly put his hand over her mouth and got her to calm down and put the index finger of the other hand to his lips.

Bending over he kissed her on
