My ex-husband was sentenced to thirty years for attempted murder of me, thirty years for attempted murder of my daughter, and thirty years for home invasion. I am a living miracle. I have three bullets in my head and one behind my heart. People need to hear my story and understand that only God is control of life. The Devil wanted me dead, but my God wanted me to live. I had no major surgeries, nor am I taking medication. God is a good God, and I know he wants me to share my story with others, to prevent them from going through what I did. I live in Chicago, Illinois, and God blessed me to receive my master's degree from the University of Illinois at Springfield. I remember all my education, job history, and my personal life. Everything except the shooting. God is so great, he protected from that horrible night in so many ways. A memory of that horror would have destroyed me. In 2003, I appeared on Maury Povich’s talk show. That's why I can share my story with ease because I have no memory and it does not affect me in any way. This testimony is so very important, because this story is proof that almighty God is still on the throne.

This book is dedicated to my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I thank God for His tender love and protection. I hope the reader of this book will receive knowledge and help understanding the power of God.

I also pray that this book reaches out to women in need of help. I really want people to understand that domestic violence is a serious problem. Domestic violence can affect the lives of many people—the victim, her children, family members, and friends. We as God’s people have to take this matter seriously and help each other out as needed.

God loves us all—the victim as well as the abuser. He wants what is best for His children. He wants the victim to get out of a violent relationship immediately, and He wants the abuser to get some help (counseling) and for him or her to stop being an abusive person.

In loving memory of my beloved mother, Doris M. Ellison—if it had not been for you, none of this would be possible. When I was escaping a horrible marriage, you were right there with open arms for me and my children. No one will ever know how I will miss you. You were and still will be my best friend. God made it possible for me to be there for you, just like you were there for me and my children. You touched so many lives I can only pray to God that I can do the same. You earned your crown and I know our Lord is saying job well done. Erica, William, John and I miss you and we will always love you .

In loving memory of my grandmother, Jessie Lee Ellison. Thank God for a grandmother like you. Train up a child in the way he should go, and he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6 (KJV)

In loving memory of my Godfather, William Earl Johnson, A man of God who provided for his wife and children. A man that loved the Lord first. Your wife and children miss you so much and they will always love you. Thank you for always being in my corner. I will truly miss you. This world won’t be the same without you.

In loving memory of my Bishop Arthur M. Brazier. You are deeply missed by so many, but you are especially missed by me. When I was shot you came to pray for me and to the children’s hospital to pray for my daughter. What’s so miraculous is that my mother was crying and comforted by the security guard at the hospital who happened to be your security at church, and he notified you that night and you were there that next morning. My mother never had to say a word. You already knew what had happened. Anyone can see that was God’s plan, and what a wonderful planner is He.

My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me; And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.

My father, who gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my father’s hand. John 10:27-29 (KJV)

    My deepest thanks to:

Erica and William IV (my children)—you are both my motivation, and you both make me want to live. I thank God for you, my two special gifts. Mommy loves you both. It doesn’t matter how old you are, you are my babies.

Rainia Teverbaugh, you are a loyal friend whom I can depend on, and I thank God for allowing me to meet a beautiful person like you. You were really there for me when my mother was ill and I am thankful to God for placing you in my life. May God continue to bless you and your family.

Twanda Phillips, from the moment I met you, you were warm and loving to me and my family. You were my trainer for ushering right after I was released from the hospital and you will never know how that inspired me to know I could do everything that I did before the shooting. I was an usher for a small congregation when I lived in Springfield and after the shooting I became a usher at A.C.O.G. Everyone must acknowledge God’s brilliant plan.

Brenda Wilson, who would have thought that after thirty eight years we would have that same tight friendship. From the time a meet you in kindergarten you were and still are a kind hearted person. Only God can put relationships together like we share.

Sarita Sashington, We have been friends since high school and you have always supported me. By getting me the job at the school, working with the children, I can see that was God’s plan for me to see I could still do all the things that I could do before the shooting.

Matt Roberts, I can’t begin to thank you for everything, you proved how much you loved my mother and myself, as soon as you found out she was ill, you came to Chicago immediately, but remember you said you were coming in June, which would have been too late, but God’s plan was for you to come in May and God called her home. May 15, 2012. God’s plan is always right on time.

Lillian Berry, I never had family and I said it didn’t bother me but that was untrue and God knew that, and that’s why he gave me a cousin who I could depend on, especially when I was going through with my mother. I remember you were out of town and you came back in town and that’s when my mother was getting ready to make her transition. Once again, everyone has got to see God’s awesome plan.
