    SARAH EVANS

Sarah Evans was raised by her grandparents. Her mother was a drug addict and after Sarah’s birth her grandparents took her away from her mother because she was not physically capable of taking care of Sarah. The grandparents lived on a small farm in Montana where they raised wheat and hay and maintained a small herd of cattle. It was not a particularly lucrative business but kept them in food and gave them a roof over their heads. Taking on Sarah was an added burden but they did the best they could and were good guardians to her.

School was easy for Sarah and she always made good grades. She became interested in law when she befriended a girl in school whose father was an attorney and she was always fascinated with his stories of the courtroom so she decided that was the career path she wanted to take. After graduating valedictorian of her class in high school, she received a scholarship to Harvard University where she pursued her dream of becoming a lawyer. The first three years she studied to get the Juris Doctorate degree to better prepare herself for the legal studies ahead of her. While studying for her law degree, she also got her Doctor of Juridical Science which prepared her for teaching law in universities. The last three years at Harvard she was a member of the Law Review and, because she was so bright, she was invited to work in a local law firm where she gained valuable experience. When she graduated, she aced the Bar Exam the first time she took it, then sent out many resumes. She had numerous offers, one from a very prestigious law firm in Denver, Colorado. This appealed to Sarah because it moved her closer to her home state, Montana, so she took the job and moved to Denver.

After working in the firm for two years, Sarah decided to open her own firm. She started out with herself, a secretary, Fran, another lawyer, Jeanie, and a paralegal, Patti, who became Sarah’s friend and confidante. Sarah had already developed a reputation and had built up a clientele so had no trouble keeping the business afloat the first year. It wasn’t long when she had acquired so many cases that she had to hire additional lawyers and other staff and came to be known as Evans’ Law Firm. She opened up the new firm on the fifteenth floor of a downtown office building, her office with a spectacular view of the Rockies. From there her business flourished and as the business grew, she turned to teaching law classes at the University of Colorado and the University of Denver, thus cutting back on court cases.

Soon after Sarah had started up her law practice, her grandparents died within months of each other and she returned to Montana to say her sad goodbyes, handle their legal issues, and tie up loose ends. She couldn’t, however, sell the farm. It had too many good memories so she sold the cattle and invested it but kept the two-thousand acres and rented the house and the land out to a young, aspiring couple just starting out. They wanted to grow wheat and this was exactly what they were looking for. She didn’t know how they were going to make a go of it but they were ambitious and hard working.

Sarah’s business continued to grow and she was able to buy herself a townhouse, furnish it, and then went car shopping and bought a black, H2 Hummer loaded with all the bells and whistles and adorned with extra chrome. She wanted something that would get around in the snow and when she looked at them, she liked what she saw. Her staff and friends thought she was crazy because most people associate the Hummer with the rough, tough men of the world. Well, Sarah thought to herself while signing the papers, I’m a pretty rough, tough person, having been raised on a farm. She never regretted her decision and she loved her Hummer.

Sarah dated occasionally and actually got involved in a couple of relationships that didn’t last more than a few months each. She couldn’t seem to hook up with anyone she could get really excited about—perhaps the chemistry just wasn’t there—but she did see Judge Michael Barkley off and on. Sarah liked Michael who never put any demands on her and they developed a relationship, but not particularly romantic, at least from Sarah’s perspective. They genuinely enjoyed each other’s company, not to mention it was a good sexual release for Sarah from time to time, and Michael, too. Sarah’s lack of boyfriends wasn’t because the men weren’t great because they were, but they just weren’t her type. So, for now, she decided to bury herself in her work which she loved anyway and it kept her occupied and her mind off of her love life, or lack thereof. Love life just didn’t seem that important at the time and she wasn’t feeling any kind of desperation. She and her friend, Patti, had long talks about this because Patti was the romantic and was always trying to hook Sarah up with a man. Sarah would laugh at her. Find someone for yourself, Sarah would tell her. Patti said she didn’t have time for men because of her job and Sarah scoffed at her. Little did either women know that Sarah’s life was about to change, although it would take a year before it happened. And when it happened, Sarah never saw it coming.

Although Sarah’s interest in men had waned, they, in turn, were drawn to her. She was a five feet nine inch slim built, auburn red haired, green eyed beauty. She walked with authority but had an elegant way about her and had a sophistication that one didn’t often see in a woman. People often stopped to stare when she walked by. All of this was complemented by the way she dressed, always elegantly with expensive clothes. She was a believer in first impressions. But at home it was sweats or blue jeans. She also believed in being comfortable.

    CHARLES CROWE

Charles Crowe was raised in Denver, Colorado, by middle-class parents. He attended South High School and graduated so high in his class, he was able to attend Cornell University in New York and obtain a Master’s Degree in architecture. Realizing he needed to know more about the structure of buildings, he then enrolled at MIT and studied structural engineering. His motive was to be able to combine aesthetics with sound construction. He went back to Denver to work and gain experience and was able to start his own business on a small scale. He soon gained a reputation because of the beautiful, but practical designs he produced, and corporations from all over the United States began calling him until his workload became so unmanageable he had to expand and hire more people. Because he wanted to ensure his designs were of the highest quality, and once the construction began, prompted Charles to hire architects and engineers of the highest quality, thus the beginning of Crowe Architecture and Engineering. He was able to obtain office space in Downtown Denver and it was the beginning of an even more prosperous business.

While Charles attended Cornell, he met a girl and they dated the last two years of college. They broke up when Charles went to MIT but, soon after Charles moved back to Denver, he got a phone call from his old girl friend. Amy Thornbird had moved to Denver and so they hooked up again, marrying soon after. In the next five years, Charles architecture company became a multi-million dollar business so he and Amy invested in a home in Cherry Hills Village. It was a costly operation getting moved in, decorating, and hiring staff to take care of the house.

Charles’ and Amy’s honeymoon period didn’t last long and it didn’t take Charles long to see this had not been a good match. It became tumultious at best as Amy, he soon found out, had a temper, something that was never apparent in the earlier days of their dating. She became extremely agitated at the slightest little thing and often took it out on the servants. Charles was constantly having to smooth things over and actually had to replace some staff as they finally quit, trying to explain problems continually cropping up and said they just couldn’t work under the present conditions. It was agonizing for Charles and he could not reason with Amy no matter how hard he tried.

Two years into Charles’ marriage he lost his parents in a head-on-collision on I-70 due to a drunk driver that had driven into oncoming traffic onto an off ramp. Charles was devastated and after he had buried them, things with him and Amy and the marriage improved and he thought it might be salvageable at that time, but it was short-lived and the storm raged on. So Charles buried himself in his work and he moved into the other master suite at the opposite end of the house as Amy made it very apparent she didn’t want him sleeping with her. For the next two years the two lived in this manner.

Charles often ate lunch downtown at Steuben’s with his co-worker and confidante, Sam Montrose. They had become good friends and Charles confided a lot of his marital problems to Sam. On one particular day at Steuben’s, they ordered lunch and while waiting for their food, Charles saw two women walk in, one a stunning red-headed, tall, slender woman who completely took his breath away. Sam heard Charles gasp and looked up and saw who he was staring at.

Who is that? Charles asked, continuing to stare. He couldn’t take his eyes off of her.

You don’t know? Sam quizzed him.

No, I don’t think I’ve ever seen her before. I’m sure I would have remembered if I had.

Sam laughed. That, my friend, is Sarah Evans, of Evans Law Firm. I’m surprised you didn’t know that. She’s pretty well known, especially in the law community.

"Too bad I wasn’t fortunate enough to meet her when I was hiring my attorneys," Charles uttered, continuing to stare at Sarah.

Charles continued to watch Sarah as she removed her coat, folded it, and draped it over an empty chair at her table, then gracefully sat and unfolded and placed her napkin on her lap. She took a sip of water and said something to the other woman. Just then Charles’ and Sam’s food was delivered, interrupting Charles’ staring. Between bites, Charles quizzed Sam about Sarah.

So, Sam, do you know this Sarah Evans? Charles asked.

Some. It’s not like we socialize or anything. We have run into each other a couple of times and know each other by sight. Her offices are not far from us and I see her in here often during lunch.

Charles pondered this and made a mental note to have lunch here even more often. And he did, sometimes rewarded by her appearance and other days leaving disappointed at not seeing her. The days she did show up he watched intently. When she talked, she was very animated, using her hands and arms. Sometimes she laughed, he loved her smile. He noticed how elegantly she carried herself, and how elegantly she dressed. One day when she came in she brushed up against him and he got a whiff of her perfume, a scent he would never forget. What kind of a woman was this that could have such a powerful effect on him.

On one particular day when Charles and Sam were having lunch, Sarah walked in and Sam heard Charles let out a long sigh. When he looked at Charles, he saw an agonized expression on his face. Sam put his fork down and said, Do you want me to introduce you to her? he asked.

Charles looked at him surprised and then held up his left hand displaying his wedding ring.

You call that a marriage? Sam said. You two aren’t even sleeping together anymore.

I know, said Charles miserably, but I am still married. I guess it’s time for me to start thinking about filing for divorce. And then Charles perked up and said, Perhaps I can hire Sara Evans to be my attorney.

Sam started laughing. Well, that’s one way to meet her.

Charles continued to have lunch often at Steuben’s hoping to get a glimpse of Sarah and she, unknowingly, accommodated him. Sometimes she was with her friend and sometimes she was alone. One of those days she came in alone and he was at a table with a perfect view of her. She ordered a light lunch and then proceeded to work a crossword puzzle. Ah, so she liked to relax. He enjoyed watching her tap her pen on the table as she pondered an answer, or put her hand on her forehead, intently studying that puzzle as if it were going to get up and walk off that table on its own power, or when she sat back in her chair and chewed on the end of the pen before suddenly getting that look of recognition and, taking her pen, she would write in an answer. She always used a pen, never a pencil, to write in her answers and this intrigued Charles. She must be a woman of great confidence he thought to himself.

One day was particularly stressful for Charles. While he was ordering his lunch, Sarah walked in alone and was seated at a table close to his but she wasn’t able to see him easily. She ordered a beverage and was looking over the menu when a man walked in, spotted her, and walked to her table. Before sitting down, he leaned over and kissed her on the cheek. Sarah smiled and looked extremely happy to see him, putting her hand on his arm as he sat next to her. Jealousy washed over Charles as he wished it was he who was at her table. The two engaged in a very animated conversation, both laughing heartily over whatever story it was the man was telling and, even though Charles agonized over this meeting of the two, he couldn’t make himself get up and leave. Sarah was there and he just couldn’t take his eyes off of her.

Going back to work was pure torture because he couldn’t concentrate on his work so he packed up a little earlier than usual and headed for home. When he entered the big house, he removed his top coat, suit jacket, and tie, and laid them on the big round table in the foyer. As he headed for the kitchen, he unbuttoned the two top buttons of his shirt and rolled up his sleeves. Maria, the cook, was preparing his dinner so he grabbed a cup of coffee and sat down at the breakfast nook as she greeted him. When she served him his dinner, he asked her to join him so he wouldn’t have to be alone. Amy never joined him for a meal anymore, so Maria fixed herself a plate and joined him. They made small talk while they ate and when they had finished and Maria had cleared the table, she poured them both another cup of coffee before rejoining him.

What is going on with you, Mr. Charles? she said compassionately, and she reached across the table and put her hand on his arm. She knew he was unhappy, but, as of late, something else was going on as he seemed so distant so much of the time. Something has been bothering you.

Charles looked at her and decided to share with her what had been going on with his obsession with Sarah. I think I might have found the right woman, Maria, but things aren’t going so well right now, he said, and being married just complicates it that much more. I can’t approach her right now.

Oh, my, Maria said. Do you want to talk about it?

Charles was actually glad that Maria wanted to hear about Sarah and said, I’ll just share with you what has been going on, he began, feeling some relief at being able to talk. Sarah is her name and I first saw her in a restaurant downtown where we all eat lunch quite frequently. The first time I saw her she took my breath away and she still does every time I see her. I purposely go to that restaurant to see her. My colleague, Sam, thinks I’m crazy and can’t figure out why I don’t file for a divorce, given the circumstances of my marriage right now. I certainly can’t pursue her as long as Amy and I are married. I guess I just need to bite the proverbial bullet and file for a divorce. This Sarah has her own law firm so I guess that would be a good place to start, wouldn’t it?

Maria patted his arm. It’s not my place to give you advice, but since you took me into your confidence, I’ll tell you what I think. You and I know, Mr. Charles, you don’t have much of a marriage with Amy. Perhaps it’s time to make a change. But let me add, please be careful so you don’t get yourself into a situation like you’re already in. You deserve better than this.

Thank you, Maria, I appreciate your concern, and your honestly. And believe me, I intend to be very careful.

The talk helped, but Charles still had to make a plan and he just hadn’t finished processing all that he needed to in order to put a plan in place.

Every time Charles saw Sarah, something deep inside of him stirred and on one particular day when Sam asked Charles to join him for lunch, Charles agreed but only if they could go to Elway’s because Charles told Sam he needed to stop this obsession with Sarah, so the two went to Elway’s and ordered their lunch. As their waitress was walking away to put in their order, in walked Sarah with her friend. Sam heard Charles gasp as he spotted her, then leaned over the table, groaning, as he grabbed his water glass and took a long gulp of water. He whispered to Sam, I’ve got to get out of here, Sam.

Sam rolled his eyes. I really am hungry and was looking forward to lunch, he protested as Charles pulled his billfold from his pants pocket, pulled out a fifty dollar bill, and threw it on the table as he stood up, using his top coat to cover the front of his torso, and headed for the door. I’ll take you to McDonalds and buy you a hamburger, he said as he walked close by Sarah on his way out of the dining room. He could smell Sarah’s perfume, which didn’t make things any better, and all the while he’s walking to the door, Sam was close behind him saying You have got to get a hold of yourself, Charles. You’re marriage is shit and you’re in love with another woman. Do something about it, man!

As they walked by, Sarah heard Sam and wondered what that was all about. Little did she know she was the object of their discussion.

When Charles and Sam got back to the office, Sam followed Charles into his office and closed the door. Charles, he said seriously, sitting down across from Charles as Charles sat down at his desk, I don’t think I have ever seen anyone so infatuated with a woman as you are with this Sarah Evans…

I don’t think this is infatuation, Charles interrupted Sam. This is something I have never experienced before, not even with Amy when we were dating, or, for that matter, any time since our marriage.

Well, like I told you at lunch, Sam continued, your marriage is shit. You know it and I know it and I think it might be time for you to do something about it. You can’t keep going to lunch expecting to see, wanting to see, Sarah. Why not get a divorce and then you can pursue this woman without feeling guilty? With no wedding ring to hold you back!

Charles had picked up a pencil and was tapping it on the desk, listening intently to what Sam was telling him. I’m sure you’re right, Sam. I don’t know what is holding me back. Divorce. Damn. I hate the word and I hate the concept. I don’t know why I’m dragging my feet other than I’m not looking forward to the fight because we both know divorce is not without nastiness. I wish that part could be bypassed. But you know what, Sam? I don’t know Amy anymore. We have separate bedrooms now and I have no idea what she does. She won’t talk to me.

That’s probably all the more reason to think about getting a divorce. You guys are not compatible anymore. You guys don’t have the same agenda anymore. Do you think she is seeing someone?

I have no idea, Charles said. Actually, I never gave it much thought. Maybe I should.

Well, I gotta tell you, buddy, if she’s not getting it from you, I can just about guarantee you she’s getting it from somebody.

Charles was surprised as Sam’s candidness. He really hadn’t given this much thought because he seemed to manage to keep his sexual urges under control, burying himself in his work, but now that Sam had brought it up, it made sense and got Charles to thinking.

"You know, Sam, you just might have something there. I think I’ll head on home and have a little chat with Amy and see if I can get out of her what is going on. Charles rose and put on his top coat and headed out the door. Good luck," he heard Sam yell after him.

When Charles showed up at home early, he went upstairs and headed for Amy’s room. He was about to knock when he heard noises from the bedroom and he reached over and opened the door. He was completely dumbfounded when he saw Amy in bed with his attorney.

Well, now, he said, standing in the doorway, watching them grab blankets and pull them up over themselves, isn’t this a sight. Not something I expected to see my wife participating in. I have been giving you the benefit of the doubt all this time, Amy, but I guess I made a huge mistake. And Tom, my trustworthy attorney, fucking my wife behind my back. Or perhaps it’s the other way around. I’ll wait outside the door while you two get dressed.

Charles fired his attorney when he came out of the bedroom and when Amy came out and tried to apologize and promise she’d never do it again, Charles calmly said to her, This marriage has been over for a very long time, Amy. I want you to pack up your things and move out as quickly as possible. I’m filing for divorce tomorrow. He turned and walked away, Amy standing with her mouth agape. Charles strode downstairs and into his office, slamming the door behind him. He called Sam and when Sam answered his phone, Charles said, You were right, Sam. Amy has been sleeping with my attorney. I just caught them in bed in Amy’s bedroom. I fired the attorney and I’m kicking Amy out. I’ll be filing for divorce tomorrow. When he closed his phone, he went back upstairs and stood outside the master bedroom while Amie packed her belongings. John, the butler, helped her carry them downstairs and to her car and Charles told her he would pack up anything she forgot and call her and let her know when she could pick them up. He asked for all her keys to the property.

I’m entitled to half of what’s in this house, she said indignantly, trying to protest as Charles followed her to her car.

Excuse me, Charles said, anger in his voice. I don’t think so, Amy. Not after what you have been doing behind my back. At any rate, you can talk to my lawyer about that. Like I said, I’ll be filing for a divorce tomorrow.

Amy got into her car, slammed the door, and drove off. Charles instructed John to ask all the servants to meet him in the dining room, ASAP. Ten minutes later, when he walked into the dining room, everyone was waiting for him.

Thank you for coming, he began. "I need to tell you that Amy has moved out of the house, at my request, and I will be filing for divorce tomorrow. She is not allowed to come into the house if she happens to show up unexpectedly. Saturday I want housekeeping to meet upstairs in the master bedroom at 10:00 and we will be cleaning everything out. Anything that belongs to Amy will be packed in boxes and that pertains to only personal items. If any of you want any of the furnishings, drapes, and/or bedding from that room in the meantime, it’s yours. I want everything out! Whatever is left goes to Goodwill. When the room is stripped, I will see to the refurnishing. Tilly, perhaps you can purchase new bedding and all the stuff that goes into the bathroom. Once it is all completed, I will be moving back into that room. Are there any questions? No questions. I just want to take this time to apologize for Amy’s treatment to all of you. I should have done something about it a long time ago." At that, he turned and exited the dining room but, before he got out of the room, he was sure he saw a slight smile on all their faces.

The following day Charles went to Evans Law Firm. As he walked into the reception area, he happened to run into Patti, the woman he saw Sarah with so often at lunch.

May I help you? Patti asked, stunned by the size and handsomeness of this man.

Yes, Charles replied. I’m Charles Crowe of Crowe Architect and Engineering and I need to see a lawyer.

Patti was speechless for a moment as it registered in her mind who this guy was. He was well known throughout the Denver business community. She was mesmerized by him, especially those iridescent blue eyes. Then everything registered and she apologized. Pattie knew exactly what she was going to do. Come with me. Patti urged him to follower her as she escorted him to Sarah’s office.

    33722.png

Early Sunday morning Charles was in the kitchen having his morning coffee when Maria joined him at the breakfast nook. Everything is out of the master bedroom, Mr. Charles. It all has been put to good use. Tilly has already assigned her staff to cleaning it, so all you have to do is refurnish it.

Thank you, Maria. I guess I’ll go shopping today. Did you find anymore of Amy’s belongings up there?

We did, and we boxed everything up. Housekeeping did a thorough sweep of the house so there is no need for you to bother yourself with that. The boxes are in the hall closet whenever she wants to pick them up.

I’ll call her, Charles said as he took a sip of coffee.

Did you file for divorce? Maria asked, although it’s really none of my business.

You have every right to know, Maria, after what all of you had to put up with. Yes, I filed and I have a tough lawyer so I hope we’re not going to have to drag this out. I’m sorry Amy caused so much grief for all the help. I should have done this a lot sooner.

No need to apologize, Mr. Charles. It’s in the past. But I am curious to know if you got to meet Sarah?

A big smile crossed Charles’ face. Yes, Maria, I did, and I have my fingers crossed. She won’t be my attorney, but the one she introduced me to, Jeanie, is conveniently in her law firm.

Maria could see a sparkle in Charles’ eyes that she hadn’t seen in a very long time.

    THE INTRODUCTION

There was a knock on Sarah’s door before Patti entered Sarah’s office. There’s a man here who needs a lawyer and, Patti’s voice went into a whisper, you have to see this guy. He’s Charles Crowe of Crowe’s Architectural Firm. Patti was always a little on the melodramatic side so Sarah just chuckled. She sat back in her chair and continued to grin at Patti, then said, Still trying to play match maker are we, Patti?

I’m not kidding, Sarah, you have to meet him, even if you decide to refer him to one of the other lawyers, you have to talk to him. Patti was so insistent that Sarah agreed to see him. Patti ushered Charles Crowe into Sarah’s office and when she saw him, he nearly took her breath away. Patti was right. There was something about this man that Sarah instantly liked. Patti saw Sarah’s reaction and, behind Charles’ back she mouthed the words, I told you so, and walked out of the office closing the door behind her. Sarah was stunned by this man’s stature. He appeared to be about six foot four inches, nice trim build, and dressed like a million bucks which he would be because he was probably worth millions. He had sandy hair and soft, steel blue eyes that were nearly translucent and made her knees go weak. Somehow she managed to stand up. She noticed slight dimples in each cheek. It was the dimples, she thought, that made him even more appealing. She walked over to him.

While Sarah was sizing Charles up, he, likewise, was doing the same with her. Being this close to this trim, five foot nine inch woman with the most beautiful auburn red hair he had ever seen was unnerving. Her hair was cut short and was slightly spiked and when he looked into her dark emerald green eyes, he couldn’t believe how his body was responding. Down boy, he thought.

Sarah suddenly realized she was staring and came to her senses. She apologized for her bad manners and asked him to sit down.

Is it hot in here? she asked, picking up a piece of paper and fanning herself.

Charles nodded his head no and said, No, I thought it was quite comfortable.

Sarah put the paper down. She was having a hard time concentrating but she didn’t want Charles to know how nervous she was. She took a deep breath and said, So what can I do for you, Mr. Crowe?

He hesitated as he thought what she really could do for him but reminded himself to behave and not to blow this because his marriage was in big trouble and he was in need of a good attorney.

Well, he began, I want to file for divorce and I heard this might be the best place to come. Come, he thought to himself and mentally groaned thinking that was poorly phrased. This woman really had an effect on him.

Sarah took out a clean legal pad and got ready to ask questions. How long have you been married? she began.

Five years, he replied. Five years too many, he muttered bitterly.

    Is there a pre-nup?

    No.

Was your business established before or after your marriage?

I established the firm before we were married but it was on a small scale then.

Tell me a little about your wife and how difficult a task we are going to have getting this divorce done.

In a nutshell, she’s a tiger and she’s going to take me for everything she can.

So, Mr. Crowe… and Charles interrupted her.

Please, call me Charles and I’ll call you Sarah. I hate formalities.

Sarah thought, and this coming from a man who has chauffeurs, servants, etc. Fine with me, she said. So continue, Charles. Why did you come to us when you have your own attorneys?

I want someone who can be objective and who doesn’t know my wife personally. You see, I caught my wife in bed with one of my attorneys who has since been fired. You just don’t know who you can trust anymore, you know?

Sarah recognized this was not a case she could take care of as effectively as one of the other attorneys could. Jeanie came to mind. Jeanie was relentless and very strong. She wasn’t afraid of anything and played hard ball when needed.

Well, Mr. Crowe, Charles, she corrected herself and, sitting back in her chair, she continued addressing him. I’m going to refer you to Jeanie, our toughest divorce attorney because I, personally, don’t have the time to devote to your case as it should be.

Charles was instantly disappointed because he would have liked to work with Sarah, but under the present circumstances, he definitely wanted a tough, devoted attorney.

When Sarah stood up, so did Charles. Come with me, she said, and I’ll introduce you to Jeanie. Sarah led him out of her office and over to Jeanie’s with Patti watching them all the way and thinking what a beautiful pair they were together. She was disappointed, however, that Sarah was escorting Charles to Jeanie’s office.

Sarah knocked on Jeanie’s door, was prompted to enter, and there she sat. Jeanie was thin, short, and had carrot-red hair and freckles scattered across her nose. But she was also very attractive. When she saw Sarah, she stood.

Jeanie, this is Charles Crowe and he needs a good divorce attorney. I recommended you.

Jeanie very obviously sized him up and in her sexiest voice said, Welcome. She extended her hand, they shook, and she motioned for him to sit. Sarah handed Jeanie the legal pad she had taken notes on and Jeanie dismissed Sarah by thanking her. Charles was thinking, this is going to be a long run and then chuckled to himself. He could handle Jeanie. He’d dealt with worse. At least he thought he had.

Sarah walked back into her office with Patti right on her heels. What did you think? Patti asked and Sarah turned toward her and said, I think I’m in love and I’m going to marry that man some day.

Then why did you set him up with Jeanie? Patti was almost stomping the floor out of sheer frustration.

Because he needed a really tough attorney and Jeanie is as tough as they come, replied Sarah. You know she’s our best divorce attorney.

But you know she’s going to try to get into his pants.

Very delicately put, Patti, and Sarah laughed. However, Mr. Crowe doesn’t strike me as that kind of man so I don’t think that’s going to happen. She dismissed Patti and closed her office door, thinking she hoped he wasn’t that kind of man.

    33724.png

Jeanie invited Charles to sit and she quickly glanced over the notes Sarah had handed her. Well, Mr. Crowe, she said, I see Sarah has already asked you some preliminary questions. Can you fill me in with some more details and we’ll get started.

Charles did not extend the same invitation to Jeanie that he had Sarah to call him Charles. He wanted to keep this as professional as possible so he went over the questions previously asked plus answered all the questions Jeanie asked. She jotted down a lot of information as Charles talked and then said, So you want to file because of infidelity, is that right?

That’s right, replied Charles. Infidelity, incompatibility, irreconcilable differences. All of that.

Do you have any proof of the infidelity? Phone calls, video evidence, pictures, e-mails? she asked.

None, he replied again, and his stomach did a flip. This, he could see, was not going to be easy.

Charles was in Jeanie’s office for two hours while she gathered as much information as she could. She could have done it in less time but she wanted to spend a lot of time with him. When she had run out of questions, she put her pen down. My retainer fee is $5,000. I’ll get to work on this ASAP. By the way, has your wife filed or has she contacted an attorney, outside of the one she’s sleeping with, of course?

    She hasn’t filed, he said.

We’ll draw up papers and you come back next Tuesday… and Jeanie flipped her calendar over to see what time she had available and continued, at 9:00 a.m. for your signature and we’ll serve her and see where this goes. I don’t mind telling you, however, Mr. Crowe, this may be a very long and drawn out process due to the fact you have no concrete proof and no pre-nup agreement. Jeanie let out a long sigh. She could see where this was going to be a real challenge because this man was worth millions and his wife was going to go after every bit she could get. Do you have any questions?

Right now, no, he replied, but I’m sure I will eventually. A dread came over him for what he had to look forward to.

Jeanie stood and said, Then we’re done here. I’ll see you back here next Tuesday. She extended her hand again and Charles stood and took it.

Next week, he agreed and he left Jeanie’s office. He walked over to Patti who was going through some files and motioned towards Sarah’s door. Is she busy?

I’ll check, said Patti and picked up a phone and Charles heard her say, Mr. Crowe would like to see you. There was a pause and then Patti said, I’ll send him in.

Charles headed for the door, knocked and entered. Sarah greeted him with a wide smile and asked, How’d it go?

He sat down without being asked and picked up a pencil and started thumping it on the desk. Sarah reached over and took the pencil from him. Are you okay? she asked.

I’m fine but you really hooked me up with a wild one, he replied. I just need to regroup because I think this is going to turn into a real nightmare.

Sarah felt sorry for Charles and she sat down. Do you want to talk about it? she asked.

He was silent and she let him get his thoughts together. I met Amy in college and we hit it off. I thought we dated long enough to know each other when I proposed. My architectural business was just getting started and I certainly didn’t have the money then that I have now so I didn’t think a pre-nup agreement was necessary. He continued with regret in his voice. So, I didn’t have one drawn up. Stupid mistake on my part.

Would you like a cup of coffee, tea, or cola? Maybe water? Sarah offered.

Water would be great, he said as he realized his mouth was very dry.

Sarah brought him a bottle of water and he had it open and half drank before she could sit back down.

Thanks, he said. Am I keeping you from anything?

No, not at all. I have no classes today and I’m not taking many cases right now.

You’re really easy to talk to, he said gratefully. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your listening to me. I just need to talk to someone I’m not involved with.

She waited for him to continue. She wasn’t about to ask him to leave because she wanted to get to know him better.

So what did Jeanie propose you do? asked Sarah.

We’re going to file on grounds of infidelity, but that will be difficult because I don’t have any concrete evidence. Dammit! he said slapping his knee. How could I have been so stupid! He got up and started pacing.

Charles, Sarah said as she stood and walked over to him, you will get through this. You, whether you believe it or not, have one of the best attorneys in the city. I’m not saying it will be easy and it’s going to get real messy before it’s over, but it will eventually end and you’ll get your divorce. In the meantime, I suggest you take a deep breath every day and deal with what comes. Go one step at a time. When and if you want to talk, I’m available, or I’ll make myself available. She walked to her desk and took a business card from a drawer and wrote on it. She presented it to Charles. I wrote my cell number down.

He looked into her eyes and all senses left him. He started to take a step toward her, he wanted to kiss those lips so badly, but checked himself and extended a hand instead. Sarah took it and the electricity shot through her. She had seen the subtle move toward her then the hesitation. She wished so much that he would have kissed her. I must be losing my mind she thought.

Look, Charles said, I sure could use a drink right about now. Would you join me?

Sarah hesitated but went ahead and agreed. It was close to 5:00 and she didn’t have any pressing work to do so why not. I’ll meet you, she said. Tell me where. I just need to make one quick call.

How about the lounge at the Brown Palace.

    I’ll be there shortly.

Charles left and Sarah suddenly realized she was shaking. Yes, she definitely needed a drink, too.

Patti came dancing in. What’s going on?" she asked coyly.

I don’t know, Patti. Look at me, I’m a mess. I’m meeting him at the Brown Palace for a drink. I must be crazy!

You’re not crazy, stated Patti. It looks like a romance brewing to me, she sang.

How can that be? asked Sarah. I just met the man.

Love at first sight, Patti sang out. Now go!

    33726.png

Charles told his driver, Paul, to take him to the Brown Palace. When he got there, he went into the bar and found an empty table where Sarah would be able to spot him easily. He ordered a Scotch, neat, and sipped it nervously as he waited for her. The twenty-five year old Glendronach Scotch slid down his throat, the polished, smoky taste penetrating his sinuses. He felt its warmth all the way down and his nerves thanked him for the soothing relief. In spite of this, every time someone came in he readied himself to stand. His hands were sweaty and his heart was beating fast in anticipation of seeing her, feeling her near him, talking to her. It seemed as if hours had passed and she hadn’t shown up yet. He wondered if she had bailed out on him and was thinking of getting up and leaving when he looked up and saw her coming toward him. Everything went into slow motion.

    33728.png

Sarah didn’t know why she told Charles she had a phone call to make because she really didn’t. She was trying to buy herself a little time to get her thoughts together, her wits about her, because this man was making her feel something she had never felt before. He didn’t make her nervous but her nerves were definitely on edge. How could that be? Her hands were sweaty and she thought she might bail but something compelled her to go ahead. She grabbed her coat and purse and took the elevator downstairs. Now she wished she had gone ahead and went with Charles because she didn’t want to take her own car. She hailed a cab, instructing the driver to take her to the Brown Palace. When she walked into the lounge, she didn’t see Charles at first glance. As her eyes adjusted to the dimness of the room, she spotted him and her heart began to beat faster. Charles stood as she approached and he held the chair to his left as she seated herself. A young woman came over and Sarah ordered a glass of white wine. Charles ordered another Scotch and when the drinks were delivered Sarah took a good sip of the wine to help calm her nerves.

I’m sorry I’m a little late, she finally apologized. Hope I didn’t keep you too long.

Not at all, Charles said, but I was wondering if you were going to make it.

Sarah felt guilt sweep over her. I almost didn’t come, she confessed.

And why would that be? he asked, finding it amusing that he had thought of leaving before she got there.

It’s really not very ethical to be socializing with clients, Sarah said.

But you’re not my attorney, Charles explained, hoping it was a good explanation and would make this get-together acceptable.

I guess, when you put it that way, it isn’t quite the same, Sarah said thoughtfully, much to Charles’ relief. Sarah’s jitters were beginning to ease as the effect of the wine took hold and she began to relax, visible enough that Charles could see it. She sat back and looked into his almost iridescent blue eyes. He was an incredibly good looking man and she couldn’t keep her eyes off of him and likewise, he couldn’t keep his eyes off of her. Now he was elated he had waited for her and thought to himself, any time he could be with her was well worth the wait.

The longer they sat and visited, the more comfortable they became with each other. Charles shared some of his past family history with Sarah and then asked her about her childhood. She explained how she was raised on a farm in Montana, much to his surprise, and he said to her, I would have never guessed you were a cowgirl, and she laughed at him and said, Yes, I rode horses, milked cows, fed chickens, all of that.

So, being raised on a farm, how is it you decided to become a lawyer? Charles asked curiously.

The father of my best friend in school was a lawyer and when I would go over to her house, while we would eat dinner, I would listen to the stories he told his wife about some of his cases and I was completely enwrapped and it didn’t take me long to figure out that that was what I wanted to do so I went to my guidance counselor and she helped me figure out what I needed to do to prepare for that career path.

And what did your parents say about that? Charles asked.

I was raised by my grandparents, Sarah corrected him, and although my grandfather wasn’t too happy about my choice, and at this point Sarah inadvertently put her hand on Charles arm that was resting on the table and it was like a bolt of lightening going through his body but he acted as if this was the most natural thing for her to do and let her continue to talk. But he came to accept it, with the help of my grandmother, and by the time I graduated from high school, they both were okay with the idea. What they really didn’t like was me going to such a big university so far away from home. And believe me, I felt it, too. The first year… and Charles felt her squeeze his arm slightly as she relived her first year at Harvard, glad she hadn’t removed her hand. He sat forward to be closer to her and she suddenly realized how close they were and her heart beat faster. She reached for her glass of wine, finished it off and asked for another. Now she was distracted and her thoughts turned to other things such as what it would be like to be in his arms, and was he a good lover, and then was glad the lights were low as she blushed slightly. He was having the same problem, looking into her eyes as she talked, trying to pay attention to what she was saying and wanting to lean over and kiss her. He couldn’t help thinking how he was going to manage these feelings he had for her before this messy divorce was over and was there even the remotest possibility she could be interested in him.

Sarah finally stood and announced that she needed to go but Charles wasn’t about to let her out of his sight so soon so he suggested to her that they get something to eat. Besides, she had drank quite a bit of wine, a downfall of hers at times, and he didn’t want her driving, not knowing she had taken a taxi. He asked their server if she could arrange for a table for them in the dining room, much to Sarah’s unheeded protests, which she did, and he, placing his hand on Sarah’s elbow, escorted her to their table.

Even though she had protested having dinner with Charles, she was glad to be with him a while longer. Dinner was drawn out and Sarah sobered by the time it was over. It was late when Charles dropped her off to get her car and she had an empty feeling as she watched him drive away. Likewise, Charles was having the same feelings as he watched Sarah enter the parking garage.

    33730.png

It was a couple of months after Sarah had first met Charles in her office when he was seeking a lawyer for his divorce, and on this particular day, and for some unknown reason, Charles had been on her mind all day, more so than usual as she often thought of him. Five o’clock came, it was nearly dark and upon looking outside, Sarah saw the skies were white with clouds and it looked like it might snow. She went over to the closet and opened the door, pulled the wool scarf off the hanger and wrapped it stylishly around her neck, then pulled the wine-colored cashmere coat out, put it on, and buttoned it. She picked up her purse and slung it over her shoulder and headed toward the elevator, bidding those still working a good evening. She stepped into the elevator, pressed the Lobby button, and just as the doors started to close, she heard a male voice call out, Hold the elevator. Sarah put her arm out to keep the doors from closing and when she looked up, Charles was entering. She was caught completely off guard, as was he, and her knees turned to jelly. The doors started to close again and another voice, Jeanie’s voice they both recognized, called out to hold the elevator but Charles let the doors close because he didn’t want this moment alone with Sarah to be spoiled. Besides, he had just spent another two hours in Jeanie’s office discussing the divorce and he was in no mood to listen to her one more minute.

Mr. Crowe, Sarah began then shook her head and corrected herself, Charles.

Sarah, he greeted her with a wide grin.

How’s the divorce coming along? Sarah asked, not knowing what else to say. She was more or less tongue tied.

Charles was so taken by Sarah’s beauty, especially her green eyes staring at him, he barely heard the question and then he realized the awkward silence.

Sorry, he apologized. I’m a little preoccupied right now. The divorce is messy, just like we knew it would be.

Well, Sarah said sympathetically, most divorces are. Of course, in your case, it might be a little messier than most.

For lack of something better to say, Charles said, I wouldn’t know. This is my first, and then he added, and my last, I hope. But it sure is dragging along.

I could probably help speed that process up for you if you like, Sarah offered.

Charles perked up. Can you do that? he asked. I really don’t want this to drag out for the next two or three years.

Sarah laughed. I have some connections.

That would be great. The sooner this is over, the better, and Charles was thinking the sooner he could pursue Sarah.

I’ll see what I can do.

The elevator stopped and the doors opened, allowing the two to exit into the building’s lobby. There was a huge Christmas tree in the middle of the lobby and suddenly it lit up. Charles saw the shine in Sarah’s eyes, almost child-like.

Isn’t that beautiful, she said in almost a whisper. I love Christmas.

Yes, Charles said softly, it truly is beautiful, but he was looking at her. She hadn’t noticed.

They both stood looking at the tree, admiring it and then Charles saw his opportunity.

I was just on my way to the Brown Palace to have a drink. Would you care to join me?

The invitation conjured up pleasant memories of their last visit at the Brown Palace and after pondering the idea, she accepted his invitation. He called Paul to have him bring the car to the entrance and Sarah and he walked to the door and waited. Minutes later the car pulled up and Paul got out and opened the back door on the passenger’s side and waited. Charles opened the door to the building. Sarah did not see the small patch of ice as she stepped outside and when her foot hit it, it went out from under her. Charles, seeing what had happened, threw his arm around her waist and prevented her from falling. His body was pressed tightly against hers. She felt a bolt of electricity go through her, as did Charles, and he reveled in the feeling of having her so close to him. Then he realized he had been holding her longer than was necessary and let her go, making sure she had her footing.

Nice catch, she said grinning at him. That could have turned into a real disaster.

Charles was still mesmerized by her. The scent of her perfume was numbing his senses and he said, in almost a whisper, I wouldn’t have let that happen.

She wanted so badly for him to kiss her but he, instead, put his hand on her back, urging her to get into the car but not before Jeanie had stepped off the elevator and watched them. She was steaming.

    33732.png

Charles removed Sarah’s coat and placed it on the empty chair at the table they were ushered to. He ordered a Manhattan and she a glass of Chardonnay.

So, Sarah, it has been a while since I saw you last. Law business must be booming.

Sarah smiled. Yes, you could say that, she said. We have been exceptionally busy these past couple of months, besides my teaching. Seems like I don’t have much time for myself lately.

I’m curious as to why you were raised by your grandparents, Charles stated, changing the subject, or perhaps I’m asking about something too personal. We really don’t know each other very well, but then again, this would be a good way for us to get to know each other better.

I don’t mind telling you, she said as she took a sip of wine and set the glass back down. My mother was a drug addict… and she launched into her story. Two glasses of wine later, she realized she had divulged a lot about herself and also realized the wine was taking its effect on her.

My, my, she said laughing, I certainly gave you an ear full. Must be the wine that loosened my tongue. Her eyes were glowing and Charles could see she needed to eat. He stood.

Come on he chuckled, I’ll buy you dinner. You can’t go home like this. He offered his hand and she took it and stood up. She felt a little wobbly and apologized. I don’t know why two glasses of wine would have this effect on me.

Did you eat lunch today? Charles asked.

Come to think of it, no, she said. I had a busy day in court today. Actually, I didn’t have time to eat.

He held her arm to steady her, an act of kindness she was most grateful for, and led her to the restaurant.

Sarah ordered the salmon and Charles ordered a steak and by the time they had finished, she was feeling much better.

Thank you for this lovely evening, she said to Charles, but I think I better be getting home before I fall asleep on you. Poor choice of words, she thought, and she was glad the lights were dimmed enough where he couldn’t see her blush.

As they got into Charles’ car, she told him to drop her off at her office where her car was parked. Charles relayed this to Paul as he drove away from the Brown Palace, but when they drove into the parking lot, Charles looked around puzzled. I thought you said your car was here.

Sarah laughed and pointed to the Hummer. "The Hummer is my car," she said.

Paul pulled over next to the Hummer and when he opened the door, Charles stepped out and held his hand out, once again, to aid Sarah in her exit. She pulled her keys out and pressed the starter button but nothing happened.

Great, she muttered under her breath. The door locks didn’t work either.

Looks like a dead battery to me, Charles said. Get back into my car and I’ll take you home.

    "But I don’t think I better leave
