Video Game Ninjas 2 - J. B. O'Neil
Chapter 1: Josh’s Problem
Tuesday is Salisbury steak day in the cafeteria at school, a boring meal for a boring day.
You know that feeling when you can barely stay awake through math class, yet you’re really worried about the test you’re about to take in history? That’s how I was feeling, but it was lunchtime, the only time of day when school is cool, except recess. It felt pretty sucky.
I was bored because last week, my two best friends, Matt and Orlando, and I gained an amazing superpower after beating the world’s hardest video game, Ninjado. It turned us into Video Game Ninjas. We could run as fast as cheetahs, lift cars, throw ninja stars...anything we wanted. But, after we fought a giant monster who liked to chow down on sheds and houses like they were potato chips, we agreed that we had to keep our powers a secret and use them only when we had to.
That was pretty grown up of us, I think, but it was dull. We had to act like regular kids when we knew we weren’t.
I was nervous because after we beat that monster, the mysterious old man, who sold us the game that gave us our powers, also gave us a creepy letter. It said:
Yochi-Kuchini-Oni
(this was the monster we fought; Matt called him Lil’ Fatty) was only a pawn in our game, ninjas. You've taken one of mine. Now I will take one of yours.
After we read the letter, the old man disappeared. Over the last few days I’d been trying to figure out who would send us a note like that. Orlando was doing his best to help, but Matt didn’t seem to care. He was sitting next to me at the lunch table, his nose just about pressed against his Game Buddy. He’d been playing that thing all day yesterday, and he looked like he was going to play it all day, again, today.
I’d tried to talk to him, but he only grunted or told me to shush. Normally, I’d just look at what game he was playing, but I was too freaked out to care about a video game right now. That was so unlike me; it scared me a little.
Finally, Orlando hurried into the lunchroom. I waved to him, and he made his way through the crowds to sit next to Matt and me.
Hey, Josh, I’ve thought it over and I’ve done some research. I’m pretty sure that there’s only one person who would send that note.
Who?
I asked.
"It seems pretty obvious now; it’s Akujin, the main villain from Ninjado. I think he’s come through the game, just like Lil’ Fatty
