    He was just a National Service Conscript. Germany, in 1960, was supposed to be an easy posting.



    He and his mate, Scouse, with their precious, but interestingly acquired Mercedes, enjoyed the life. Even with all the problems caused by lots of girls, and a padre, they travelled around Germany and the Benelux countries, had lots of laughs, and often caused mayhem for others.



    Then he volunteered for something over which he had no control. Only nineteen years old, he ended up in East Germany, in the Harz Mountains with a unit that, unlike him, were used to killing.



    He joined forces with a young East German girl, trying to make her way to the West. But could their growing love for each other survive the journey through the mountains, in the middle of winter, and could they ever hope to get across the increasingly fortified border to freedom in the West?



    And, if so, what then?

    The author had spent two years in Germany, 1959/1962 researching his first book, Volunteer, not me, sir! for which he had all his living expences paid for, even though they were very meager, and at times he had to resort to other methods to pay for the little extras. Now living in Kingsthorpe, Northampton for the last fifty years and married with three children and a grandson, and also retired he was able to write “TWO TREES AND FREEDOM” just from his past experiences, and as he was on friendly terms with the charecters of both books which did help. He now spends his time between writing and looking after his two rabbits. Two rabbits? after reading his two books you'll probably understand.
