      From Here To Eternity

      Most likely, you are reading this because:

      a) Christians have vanished in numbers and you are trying to understand what happened.

      b) Christians have not suddenly vanished in spite of the fact that it seems to you that The Tribulation spoken of in the Bible has already begun.

      c) You want to examine this material to determine if you should leave a copy on your living room table for those who come looking for you, when you and others who believe as you do, suddenly vanish.

      If you are in groups a or b, do not lose heart! You can recover from the situation. Whatever you do, don’t abandon your faith in Christ; no matter what! Read on!

      Let’s start with some working definitions.

      Jesus, speaking of a future time in human history, said:

      (21) For there will be greater anguish than at any time since the world began. And it will never be so great again.

      (22) In fact, unless that time of calamity is shortened, not a single person will survive. But it will be shortened for the sake of God’s chosen ones.

      Matthew 24:21-22 NLT

      The expression greater anguish, in the original Greek text, is the expression megas thlipsis. Megas means exceedingly great and thlipsis means anguish or tribulation.

      Jesus is referring to a unique period in human history during which the agony-troubles-distress-anguish-tribulation of human earthlings is greater than it ever has been before or ever will be again. Hence, this unique period has become known as The Great Tribulation.

      The next verse tells us that the events which occur during The Great Tribulation bring mankind to the brink of annihilation. Reread verse 22; stop and think about it! It tells us that God will intervene in human affairs to keep that from happening. It further tells us that He does this because He does not want Christians to suffer through the horror of such an event. Clearly, such a time is still in the future and some number of Christians are still alive at the end of The Great Tribulation or God would not have had to shorten it.

      It is very important to understand that many Christians will experience The Great Tribulation. Let me say that again; MANY CHRISTIANS WILL EXPERIENCE THE GREAT TRIBULATION! In his renowned revelation, John speaks of seeing countless Christians from all over the world who experienced The Great Tribulation.

      (9) After these things I saw, and lo, a great multitude, which to number no one was able, out of all nations, and tribes, and peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne, and before the Lamb, arrayed in white robes, and palms in their hands,

      (10) and crying with a great voice, saying, `The salvation is to Him who is sitting upon the throne—to our God, and to the Lamb!’

      (11) And all the messengers stood around the throne, and the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell upon their face, and bowed before God,

      (12) saying, `Amen! the blessing, and the glory, and the wisdom, and the thanksgiving, and the honour, and the power, and the strength, are to our God—to the ages of the ages! Amen!’

      (13) And answer did one of the elders,
