First, this is for my students for all their discussions with me and just for being good students.

Second, this is for my daughters, Heather and Kate, for all their good advice about job hunting.

Last, this is for my wife, Susan, for all her editing and for all her good ideas that made this a much better book than it would have been.

    Preface

This book is different from most books about job interviewing. Get The Job! focuses almost entirely on the questions (and suggested answers) most commonly asked during an interview. Believe me, more than anything else, your success in landing the job you want will be based on how well you answer the interviewer’s questions. If you want to be ready with the best answers, this is the book for you. It will prepare you to analyze questions, respond with sharp answers, and help you get the job.

In my 30 year business career, I conducted hundreds of job interviews, especially among young people. Now that I am a professor at New York University (New York City) and Iona College (New Rochelle, New York), I am frequently asked for help by students to prepare for job interviews. Instead of looking like a deer in the headlights, you can lay out a logical approach to an answer and look like a real professional…someone who knows what he or she wants and who knows how to get it.

The book is primarily geared for younger job applicants looking for their first permanent job. You may be looking for a job in business, not-forprofit, education, or any other field of employment. This book is also helpful for undergraduate college students applying for internships, study grants, or graduate school. Job interviewers talking to potential interns, such as summer interns, will be looking for evidence of intelligence and motivation and perhaps some specific job skills. They won’t
