    Glossary

baobhan sith (baa’-van shee): Vampiric fey that roam the Scottish highlands. They can travel from underhill to Earth through a cairn. They are always female, their victims are always men. They wear green gowns and have talons, but no fangs. Like other vampire types, they drink human blood and fry in the sunlight. Often referred to as dancing vampires, they target young men coming from pubs at night. The baobhan sith dance with them until the men grow exhausted. Then the vampiric temptresses transform their long nails into talons and rake them across the men’s backs, clawing at their victims’ skin, draining their blood, then drinking it. You can banish a baobhan sith by replacing the loose stones of the cairn.

bodhran (bow rawn): The traditional goatskin drum used in Celtic music and ritual.

cairn: A mound or pile of stones, usually a memorial or a marker.

fianna (fee AE n uh): A legendary band of warriors who fought for the High King of Ireland.

Irn-Bru (iron brew): A highly popular orange-flavored soft drink in Scotland.

Sugh seirc (sooch sheerk): From Irish mythology; the dimple or mark on the god Diarmiud’s forehead that makes him irresistible to women.

tablet (taib let): A Scottish sugary confection much like fudge but not as soft and with a more grainy texture.

underhill: The realm or dimension of the fey, it is entered through the ground. The gods and the fey live there together.

Diarmiud (Dear mid): Son of Donn and a warrior of the fianna. He has a love spot on his forehead and any woman who looks at it falls in love with him.

Donn (Doun): God of the dead. He is Dairmiud’s father, but he gave him to Angus Og to raise.

    Chapter One

Angus had to focus to put one foot in front of the other. Along with his three best friends, he stumbled down the dark, highland road. Did you see the girl I bought a pint for?

Pretty, Grant mumbled. Wouldn’t go home with you, though.

Because of you boneheads, Angus snapped as he swayed on his wobbly legs.

That girl’s married. Brodie wavered as he trod through long grass and heather.

Angus snorted. Why is she in a pub alone if she has a husband?

To get some numbskull to pay for her drinks, Brodie said in a slurred voice.

Angus jerked his head toward his redheaded friend stumbling in the field beside the street. Do you know you’re in the grass?

Brodie looked around him. What happened to the road?

Angus glanced at the round moon riding the murky sky so low, so close to the curving road. The moon’s bright.

Good. We can see where we’re going. Grant grabbed Brodie, tugging his arm until he stood on the street.

Where are we going? Shamus wobbled behind them. I forgot.

Home. Angus gripped his stomach, which flipped over in a somersault.

Brodie wandered off again and collapsed to the ground with a loud thump.

Get up. Angus stooped over him. An owl’s eerie hunting call pierced the quiet night.

I fell in the heather. It smells good.

Angus breathed in the floral and herbal scent of the purple flowers on the bushy shrubs as he helped Brodie up. Then the four friends continued weaving down the narrow street.

Angus gasped at the sight before him.

Look at that. Shamus pointed at four women with cascading, red hair.

Angus swept his gaze over their sweet, angelic faces. Their eyes shone emerald green, the same shade as the revealing gowns, which emphasized every curve of their bodies.

"The baobhan sith. Pain shot through him as if his chest had been kicked in. His mind flashed to the day these creatures attacked him and his brothers. Run!"

But he couldn’t. And neither could his friends. They could barely walk.

Why flee? The most voluptuous of the fey women swayed her ample hips. My name’s Fuamnach and I want to dance. Her lush lips curved into an inviting smile. You’ll like holding me tight.

They call me Aithbhreac. The willowy one sauntered toward Shamus. Looks like you had a good time at the pub, no reason for the fun to end. She held out her arms to
