About this ebook

From Jonathan Kent, author of 'The Shael Chronicles' and the best selling short story 'The Waiting Room', comes the new chilling short story - '01:49'

Have you ever seen signs in everyday things? Do you think these signs are telling you something, but you've no idea what? If so, then welcome to '01:49'

After waking up at exactly 01:49 in the morning, Tom Harper has a very strange day. He is being continuously plagued by the numbers 1, 4 and 9 that keep cropping up in increasingly random places. He thinks they might mean something, but they also could just be a bunch of weird coincidences. Either way, he knows this day is going to be like no other.

As the day draws to a close, we get to learn exactly what those numbers mean and how Tom Harper's life will never be the same again.

You have been warned...

    01:49

I was woken at precisely 01:49 in the morning. As far as I could tell, there was no reason for it. I couldn't remember having any dreams and the house was still, with only the far off whirr from the refrigerator in the kitchen. Suzie, lying on her back and snoring in that effortless way women do, was out for the count.

No, nothing had woken me up, but here I was wide awake anyway. Heart pounding as if I'd just run the 400 metres. Which was a joke in itself, as at 45, it had been nearly 30 years since I'd run my last race, and I wasn't even that good back then! Don't get me wrong, I may have the beginnings (well, maybe a little more than that) of a spare tyre, but I wouldn't say I was unfit.

Who am I kidding? These days just climbing the stairs can puff me out. I was always so slender in my youth, but the last five years since turning 40 have seen me balloon. Where once a Large was baggy, now the XL's were getting tight. I wouldn't call myself a complete porker, by why have a single when a Double Whopper will do?

I sat up, trying to release the duvet from under Suzie without waking her. She wasn't at her best when woken in the night. My heart was still pounding. It was so hard, it felt like it could burst. Coupled with the throbbing in my temples, it was no wonder I woke up. There was a tingling sensation in the fingers of my left hand and all up my arm. I guessed I must have been sleeping on it and (ironically) sent it to sleep. Funny, but I was sure I woke up lying on my other side. Didn't I?

I swung my legs out of bed and stood. Something definitely wasn't
