Since 2001, Clayton Oliphint has served as senior pastor at the 6,000-member First United Methodist Church in Richardson, Texas. Dr. Oliphint received a B.A. in History and Religion from Austin College and Master of Divinity and Doctor of Divinity degrees from Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University. Clayton and his wife, Lori, both “preacher’s kids,” are the parents of three children.

    CHAPTER 1

    FOCUS ON THE BASICS

    If you could imagine God’s perfect game plan for our world, what do you think it would look like? Our role as Christians is to play our hardest at our own positions to make that plan happen. By virtue of our baptism, we are called to get off the sidelines and get in the game, becoming a participant in what God is doing in the world.

    So what does it mean, in terms of being a Christian, for us to get in the game? Living the Christian life can often be frustrating and confusing. There are so many voices, each seemingly shouting louder than the next one, telling us what being a real Christian should be all about. For many of us, the Bible is confusing and further complicates our understanding of faith. Some of us say, I love God, and I want to serve God, but I’m not sure where to begin!

    (Clayton) When I played college football, we played an early season game in which our team played terribly. We showed up that day, but our heads were not in the game. We all knew that we were capable of playing better, but we made mistakes. Assignments were not carried out. Blocks were missed. Tackles were not made. Passes were dropped. Silly penalties occurred at inopportune times. Though the score was close, we lost a game we should have
