But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound…. Romans 5:20

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.

    Ephesians 2:8-9

    Prologue

There you go buddy, all done. The tattoo artist handed the man a mirror and then got up and started gathering his tools to clean them. The man admired the tattoo on his chest. The rose was well designed with twelve petals. The thirteenth petal was loose, and seemed ready to drop away at any time. One tiny drop of blood dripped from the petal to splash at the bottom of the rose’s stem.

You do good work. He said. He laid two hundred dollars on the tray and shrugged back into his shirt. He walked to the full length mirror and surveyed himself as he buttoned up. He was still not used to this new face, but he would get there. At least the surgeon had improved upon his already good looks, smoothing out some imperfections, changing his nose slightly. It was amazing the difference a nose could make. His eyes were green now and complemented the darker hair and beard.

Come back anytime, mister. The tattoo artist said, gathering up the money and slipping it into his pocket.

The man nodded and stepped out into the warm California sunshine. Looking at his watch, he was pleased to see he had plenty of time to make his flight to North Carolina. He got behind the wheel of a black sedan sitting by the curb. The demonic prince Legaon settled in with the man and laughed as they drove away.

Finally we can get on with our plan, he spoke to the man’s mind.

Yes finally. The man agreed aloud.

    ************

The two warriors took to the air. It was time. Suddenly both angels were attacked and hurled back to the ground. With no warning, they had been blindsided by four demonic princes. The princes gloated as the angels rose up, swords drawn and wings unfurled. Good luck warriors. One lizard like creature said, shrieking with laughter. You have no prayer cover here.

The angels knew it was true. They would have to fight their way through these demonic spirits in order to get word to Sanyi and Jabir. These four princes were in their own territory and they were strong here. Victory, though assured, could take a while, and it could require help from above.

Ceulen raised his sword. Then let’s get to it demons. We have business to attend elsewhere.

    Chapter One

Sanyi, Jabir, and Falden stood in the yard watching the little girl play. As usual, Sara had her hands full with Grace as she squealed and ran around the yard. Her laughter was infectious and the angels enjoyed the pure innocence of the child.

Suddenly, the atmosphere changed. Each warrior sensed it immediately. Something was amiss. They looked toward the horizon but nothing was visible to their eyes, but a darkness had disturbed the stillness.

Could it be time? Falden asked.

Possibly. Sanyi said. We have not heard anything from Ceulen and Takas.

Perhaps they have been held up. This from Jabir.

Aye. That is always a possibility. Sanyi agreed. Their prayer cover is questionable there.

    Bad!

The warriors turned to look at Grace. She pointed to Falden and then to the sky. Bad! She said.

Falden looked at the other two warriors. She knows. He said. This did not surprise the warriors. Grace had an uncanny ability to sense the spirit realm.

Though they were not visible to humans unless the Lord required them to be, Grace could see them. Most children could see them when they were very small, but Grace had never lost that ability. She spoke to them sometimes, but for the most part, she just seemed content to know they were there.

    Bad! she said again.

What is bad honey? Sara asked her. She squatted down beside the girl and stroked her long dark hair.

Grace looked up toward the sky and scrunched up her nose. She shrugged and patted her mom’s face. Mom. She said.

‘Bad’ was forgotten as Grace threw her arms around her mother. She kissed her cheeks and patted her face. Mom. She said again.

Yes, I am your mom and proud of it. Sara told her. She looked at the little girl in wonder.

When she and Ben found out they were having a child with Downs Syndrome, they were fearful at first but they could never have been prepared for the love they had experienced since she had been born.

There had been some challenges, but Grace was a bright happy child who loved without measure. She did not meet a stranger, which was sometimes a scary thing, and sometimes she was much too curious for her own good, but Sara and Ben would not have traded her for a million other children. She was perfect just the way she was.

Want to go have lunch with Daddy? Sara asked her.

Yeah, she said, a wide grin on her face. Lunch. Dad-dy.

She took her mom’s hand and they started inside. She looked back to where the warriors stood. C’mon. She said, motioning for them.

Sara looked around the yard to see who Grace was talking to. She saw nothing, as usual. But sometimes she wondered just what it was that Grace saw. She looked back once more. Perhaps her protector from the woods was here too?

    ************

Ceulen and Takas were tiring. They bore many battle wounds that would have to be healed before they went to warn Sanyi and Jabir. The dark prince was most likely in North Carolina by now, as the battle had been raging for hours.

The demons were also tiring. Though there were four of them, the angelic warriors had more than held their own. The demons had retreated back for a moment and were huddled together plotting their next move.

Suddenly, the sound of a trumpet could be heard and another mighty angel arrived. The angel stood in all his splendor, his inner being was aglow for he had come straight from the throne room of God.

The demons hissed and spat and covered their eyes with their bat-like wings as he settled in the air between them and Ceulen and Takas.

The Lord has seen this battle raging and He has sent me to declare that it is over. He said without preamble.

That is not fair, warrior! One of the princes said daring to draw closer.

The angel, who was called Caspian, simply looked at the demon and he retreated back to the huddle. I come from the throne room of God to deliver this message demon. You will obey the Lord of Hosts. Otherwise…he trailed off and looked at the demonic princes.

Finishing his sentence was not necessary. We will obey! One of the princes said.

Caspian turned to Ceulen and Takas then, effectively dismissing the demons. When he touched the two warriors, their wounds began immediately to heal. The Lord is pleased with you both, and He says to you now, go.

Ceulen and Takas bowed to Caspian and left quickly to do as the Lord bid them.

    Chapter Two

As the cab came to a stop outside a set of townhouses, Grant Matthews grabbed his suitcase, paid the cab driver, and walked quickly up the walk. He found E10 within a couple of minutes and tried the key card. It worked perfectly.

He went inside and was pleased to see that the furnishings he had ordered had all been delivered and set up to his specifications. There was little that he would miss from his past life. There was no need to miss it, he thought. Faking his death had made it impossible to go back and retrieve anything. Nothing of importance had been left behind anyway.

He explored the one bedroom, one bath unit that would now be home. Everything was sleek, modern, and expensive. He was pleased. At least money wasn’t something he had left behind, he thought, running his hand along a gold statue that sat on the mantle.

Money was something he would never have to worry about. As Joe Blackburn, he had written over forty books, and more than half of those were best sellers. He had lived off the royalties and hid away more cash than he could ever use in one lifetime. Or two…

He walked to the bedroom and sitting on the dresser, just as he had specified, was the wooden box that he had imported from Japan. It was unique and beautiful, the design unlike any other he had ever seen.

He picked it up and sat with it on the bed. He began to move the hidden tumblers that had been carved into the design. When he had moved each one as he had been taught, a spring could be heard releasing the top of the box. Pulling the top apart, he reached inside and lifted out a tightly wrapped package.

He carefully and lovingly unwrapped it until he held the hunting knife in his hand. Hello my beauty. He said.
