    Chapter One

With Harley off for the day to care for her sick child, Cindy Baker stepped up into the role of full-time waitress. She normally performed a few waitressing duties while she took care of her little restaurant, The Hungry Bear Café. When she wasn’t taking inventory of their supplies or entering weekly time sheets into the payroll software, she often took to the dining floor to top off coffee cups, chat with her customers, and ring up checks. But this time she was taking and delivering orders as well.

Jimmy, I need an extra order of biscuits and gravy. I dropped another one, Cindy called into the kitchen.

The short order cook, a burly man with a bushy beard, shook his head and laughed. I’m going to start gluing them to your hands.

You ought to! Cindy headed back to the dining room to check up on a customer near the front. She was doing her best to make her rounds, and she had a bad feeling she had missed him. How is everything tasting today, sir?

The man at the table was tall and slim, his wiry form tucked up under the table with just enough room for his knees. He had dark brown hair that was receding slightly at the front and kept in a slicked back style. His wireframe glasses were pushed all the way up his nose until they nearly pressed into his skin, and he cut each piece of his pancakes into minute little bites before stabbing them and lifting them to his mouth with the fork facing down. Cindy recognized him as Don McNally, a local accountant in Peach City.

He regarded Cindy out of the corner of his eye but did not turn to look at her. Oh, it’s fine. Thanks, he replied quietly.

How’s everything going at work? I imagine you’re pretty busy with tax season. It was March, and although she had filed her taxes almost a month ago she knew there were many who wouldn’t do so until the last minute.

Don shrugged, a minute movement of his shoulders. It won’t get very bad until April, when everyone comes in with shoeboxes full of receipts and expects me to sort them.

He had never been a very social man, but Cindy thought he seemed even more quiet than usual. Are you okay? She always took it upon herself to listen to the troubles of her customers. She wasn’t a bartender, but she found that people opened up just as easily under the influence of good food as they did alcohol.

Yes. Thank you. His words were short if not curt, and she took her cue to move on to the next table.

The bell over the door rang as a young woman walked in and stepped up to the counter. Her black hair was swept back into a ponytail, although a few pieces of it had worked their way loose and now framed her face. She wore an apron over her t-shirt and jeans that said Canine Club.

Can I help you? Cindy asked as she came around to the cash register.

I’m here to pick up an order, the girl explained. The name’s Rachel Gibbs. She gave Cindy a shy smile and shoved her hands into the pockets of her apron, which had several white dog hairs clinging to it.

I’ll see if it’s ready. The Styrofoam box with Rachel’s name was waiting behind the counter, and Cindy picked it up with both hands to make sure she didn’t drop it. She really had been a klutz, and she wasn’t going to keep the girl waiting. She checked the ticket. That’ll be $10.99.

Rachel produced her debit card and handed it over.

I gather you’re a dog groomer, Cindy said. It wasn’t the best start to a conversation, but she had already failed miserably with Mr. McNally. It couldn’t go any worse than that.

The girl’s cheeks flushed as she looked down at her own clothing. Yes, I’m sorry. I should have changed, but I’m just taking a quick break for lunch.

No, no. Don’t be sorry. Cindy waved off her embarrassment as she ripped the receipt out of the printer and handed it over along with her debit card. I think it sounds like a pretty neat job, actually.

Rachel’s cheeks remained pink, but she seemed slightly less flustered. It is. I love animals, and I like working by myself. It’s peaceful. She smiled again as she picked up her food. Do you have dogs?

Cindy shook her head. She and her husband Brian had been talking about getting one. They had even gone down to the Peach City Humane Society to look at the ones they had available. But then he had died, and she hadn’t really thought about it since then. Perhaps a dog or a cat would have been nice company in the time since his death, which had been several years ago now, but she’d thrown herself into running the café instead. I don’t, but I have some friends that do. I’ll make sure they come and see you.

Thanks! Rachel took her container and turned for the door, a stray hair or two still hanging in the air after she had gone.

I wouldn’t do that, if I were you.

Cindy was startled to find Don McNally standing at the counter now. Oh, I’m sorry! I didn’t give you your ticket yet. She fished the ordering pad out of her pocket and tore it off. That’ll be $7.50. Now what were you saying?

Don looked gravely serious as he loomed over her. That girl. The dog groomer. Don’t send any of your friends to her, not unless you wish a serious injury on one of their pets.

Cindy shook her head and blinked, sure that she had misheard him. He sounded like he was reading dramatic dialog that provided the foreshadowing in a bad horror
