Introduction
I was privileged to grow up in a Christian home attending church regularly. My family was always the first to arrive and the last to leave. All of my life, my parents modeled servanthood so well I had a pretty good idea what it meant to live your life in service to God. However, in all the good—the church life, Sunday school, the summer camps, etc.—something was still missing, something crucial.
At fifteen I received Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior and then set out working to please Him
in my everyday life. I expressed much thankfulness for His grace and favor accepting me into His kingdom.
The problem was my behavior often arose more from fear than a place of joy. I was so grateful He wasn’t going to throw me in Hell—well, at least as long as I wasn’t sinning too badly. Although God’s grace is not something to take advantage of (an idea we’ll explore in this book), living with such a fearful revelation of God kept Him at a distance in my thinking. In my mind He was elusive, harsh, and a bit hard to please. Therefore I worked for Him, being excellent on the outside but feeling empty on the inside.
How could this be? I was born again and sincerely desired to walk with God. And yet a gaping hole existed in my heart that I didn’t know how to fill. I tried many things: relationships, perfectionism, working harder, reading the Bible more, etc., until eventually giving up. At twenty-two, in the midst of a mess of a life I’d made, I came to the end of myself and there in the fire I found the key I had been looking for. Wrestling with continuous panic attacks, I came to the end of my human strength and God’s power led me to one simple verse. There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment and whoever fears has not been perfected in love
(1 John 4:18). All I knew was fear. Where was this perfect love
that was supposed to cast out
my fear? Where did it come from and how could I get it?
I can remember being a teenager and wanting to do what teenagers often want to do—be a bit rebellious. I had my heart set on attending a party with some of my friends. My parents, being good and loving, knew this would not be the best environment for me. On this particular day they did not choose to enact their authority and forbid me to go. My dad, the king of wise one-liners, simply left me with a powerful statement as I excitedly got ready to leave the house. Instead of lecturing me on the dangers and choices I would soon face, he simply said, Remember who you are…
At that time I was still very much discovering who exactly I was, but I knew what he meant. He was reminding me to remember the Christian values I had been brought up on. In this way, remembering who I was would protect me from involving myself in things contrary to my nature. Knowing who we are and having a solid identity gives us a strong sense of direction in life—not only in the natural but the spiritual sense, too. When I left the house that day, I represented not only myself but my family and my father. A deep sense of purpose and responsibility entered my heart.
Understanding the relationship we can have with God as His children, and His heart towards us as our Father, is the foundation for everything else we do as Christians. Without security in our position with God, we cannot fully live out our callings to their potential. It is a debilitating thing to try living without an inner sense of being loved and accepted, and no less debilitating to try to serve a Holy God from a distance. We can never be comfortable in the presence of someone when we are unsure of their welcome. If our approach to God is still somewhat timid and unsure, our connection to His resources will be intermittent at best. Allowing ourselves to be perfected
in His love through the washing of His word will set us into a new place of freedom in our walk as Christians. This is how the Christian life becomes an adventure, ever discovering more about who we are and who our Father is. This revelation will be life and freedom for us.
This book explores the great relationship God longs for and calls us to through salvation. It seeks to move from the potentially crippling state of uncertainty in our identity towards the powerfully freeing revelation of true identity as sons and daughters of God.
Paul said it was essential to know "how wide, how long, how high and how deep" the love of God is in order to receive the fullness of life and power that comes from God
(Ephesians 3:19, NLT). I echo his prayer that as you read this book you too would divinely discover the fullness of life and power that comes from God!
I pray as the Holy Spirit illuminates these words He will:
…grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
—Ephesians 3:16–19, ESV
Read on and discover all He has for you in the fullness of His word!
Author’s Note
Many scriptures in this book as well as the text itself refer to sons without the addition of daughters. This doesn’t mean females are not included. For example, 1 John 3:1 reads, How great is the love the Father has bestowed upon us that we should be called the sons of God.
The Greek word for sons is TÉKVOV translated téknon (tek’-non) which means child, daughter, or son. Although the word son
generally means a direct male descendant, in the Bible it has many uses referring to a characteristic or identity, e.g. sons of Aaron
were priests and the sons of Asaph
were musicians (1 Chronicles 25:1). As Galatians 3:7 clarifies, it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham
and since now there is therefore neither male nor female
through salvation (Galatians 3:28–29), women can freely be included in the many verses that reference the sons of God! The use of the term sons
represents a relationship open to all humankind, which we will be exploring in this book.
