    Chapter 1

Jason was laying in his bed, he hadn’t slept since the day Allison was taken. His body was feeling the pain of loss, hunger, and exhaustion. How could he sleep with her missing? He wanted answers, but was getting nowhere with the police. Officer Bailey had been helpful, but Jason felt they had not taken the case seriously. They had spent more time accusing him of foul play than looking for her.

He was tossing around in the bed and fighting sleep when the doorbell rang. He was in a stupor and didn’t hear the bell at first. His thoughts were so consuming, that it took a few more rings and some heavy knocking on the door to get his attention.

BAM, BAM, BAM!!! Jason, it’s Officer Bailey. Are you ok? BAM, BAM, BAM!!! Jason are you in there? Officer Bailey listened carefully to see if he heard any movement this time.

Startled out of his inertness, he quickly jumped out of the bed and headed to the door. Yah, I’m coming. Hold on, Jason yelled as he lazily sauntered down the stairs and opened the door.

Jason. Is everything ok? I was ringing the bell and knocking. I saw your car in the driveway and started to get a little worried when you weren’t answering. Officer Bailey’s face and tone of his voice showed concern for Jason’s well-being.

With his head low, rubbing the back of his neck, Jason quietly answered, Yah, sorry. I was just lying in bed thinking. That’s all I do now. I can’t stop playing every possible scenario in my head.

Jason showed complete defeat and looked like he had been through hell. He hadn’t shaved since Allison was taken, his beard was thick and unkempt. His eyes were bloodshot with bags under them showing he hadn’t slept in days. He was in sweats and a T-shirt and clearly hadn’t showered either.

Jason stepped aside, holding the door open and motioning for Officer Bailey to come in. He almost didn’t recognize Bailey without his uniform. Bailey was dressed casually in dark washed jeans with a green, blue and white plaid button up shirt with a black jacket over it.

You don’t look good Jason. Have you been able to sleep…? Or shower? Officer Bailey waved his hands as if motioning the smell away and chuckled, hoping to gain some emotion from Jason.

Jason snickered a little, I guess a shower wouldn’t be a bad thing. As far as sleep, I just don’t think I can. My brain won’t shut off.

It’s important to stay alert and you can’t do that if you are not sleeping. How do you expect to find anything when you can’t keep your mind straight or even take care of yourself? Bailey asked with a harsh tone this time, hoping to get through to Jason.

I don’t know, ok. I just don’t know. I feel like I am losing my mind. Tears started to fill Jason’s eyes. It just doesn’t make any sense and I can’t go on without her.

Listen, I can’t even imagine what you are going through, but you have to get some rest and eat something. She needs you to be at the top of your game. She needs you to focus on things if you’re going to help us find her, Officer Bailey said.

You’re right. I can’t find her unless my head is clear. I just miss her so much and I can’t fathom what she is going through right now. I keep seeing her, lying in our bed that morning, beautiful and happy; full of life and energy. I just want to see her face again. As he was talking, Jason made his way to the couch and sat down, leaned back and put his hands on his face. She was perfection. We had everything and now… Jason began to weep.

Do you have anything strong to drink? I think we need something to help you rest. Officer Bailey said with an inquisitive smile.

I guess I could use a drink. he stood up and walked to the kitchen.

Jason loved his scotch. Allison always made sure that he had a couple bottles of his favorites. Nothing under 18 years aged and his absolute favorite was The Glenlivet. He grabbed 2 stone cubes from the freezer that Allison had gotten him so his Scotch wouldn’t be watered down by the ice, and he poured them each a small glass and sat down at the dining room table. The sun was shining in through the windows, making it nice and warm on their skin.

So, Jason, tell me about Allison. How did the two of you meet? Tell me your story. Officer Bailey took a sip of scotch and felt its warmness run smoothly down his throat. He had never tasted
