Vedic Math - Mental Math for Everyone - Gaurish Borkar

    1. PURPOSE

Mathematics is a tricky subject. Those who love, enjoy it much and those who don’t, feel it’s boring. I lost interest in mathematics while in 7 th class. Based on what I remember, it was mainly due to lack of understanding of negative numbers. By nature, I am kinaesthetic person and therefore I refuse to accept anything unless understood thoroughly. Generally, just memorization doesn’t work for me and the same thing happened about multiplication of negative numbers. Our teacher presented them as rules and I refused to accept them at face value. One year later my cousin grandfather started living with us and he had great interest in teaching. Moreover, his concepts in mathematics were extremely clear and he could answer all my crazy questions. This retriggered my interest in mathematics. The whole journey was so joyful that I wish everyone gets a grandfather like him who is at home to help with fundamental questions in studies.

Later, when I was in 9th I was introduced to Vedic Math by my close friend. At that time, I thoroughly enjoyed it and started using it to an extend where I completely forgot methods taught in the school. Couple of years back I started taking courses in Vedic math and I repeatedly received questions about relevance of the course in school. Even though these methods cannot be directly used in school today, some of the methods are being included in school curriculum and therefore I decided to author books as per the curriculum.

When I started thinking about developing books as per the curriculum, next question was which board to follow. After a bit of research, I got to know that CBSE is most popular board in India and therefore I decided to develop Vedic Math books for CBSE curriculum. Finally, I had a choice of developing books from class I and I decided to develop the first book for class VIII. Class VIII is foundation for board exams and therefore I felt this is right time to start strengthening knowledge, skills and abilities. Later I also realized that arithmetic is fundamental to math and it shall also be learnt well. Therefore, I decided to author this book on primary school arithmetic rather than a book for 9th or 7th class. Eventually, I plan to author books for each class till 10th.

In this book, we will learn basic arithmetic. The structure of this book and sequence of the syllabus is not the same and it is intentional. The book is designed in such a way that all required methods from Vedic math are covered here and the student need not refer to any other book to learn the basics.

I am confident that this is fun and joyful journey to all the students and their parents. I wish you all the best for more love towards mathematics in general and Vedic math specifically.

    2. Introduction to Vedic Math

As I just told you in previous chapter, one of my friends introduced me to Vedic math in 1992 (when I was in school). As he was elder to me, he was certain that it is helpful, as it had helped him during his school days. Since my school days, I am in love with Vedic math. It has helped me during my school and until now. Recently, one of my friends mentioned about challenges of pupils at school. One of the major challenges was math. While discussing, I realized that Vedic math is a solution to their challenges and I took a course for a small group of pupils. This course helped the pupils considerably and I decided to author books on Vedic Math. Before we start learning, let’s understand more about Vedic math.

    What is Vedic math?

Vedic math is a different way of doing math. This method is simpler and easier than prevalent methods. It is much faster and more suitable for mental math. Vedic math mainly covers algebra and arithmetic. Some part of Vedic arithmetic is developed on algebraic principles. Naturally, it is applicable in coordinate geometry and matrices. This method has many advantages. One of the advantages is that you do not need to learn algebra separately as it is just an extension of what you already apply in arithmetic. In fact, arithmetic is simplified using algebra. Vedic math even has new or different methods to solve algebraic problems. Additionally, everything in Vedic math is based on only 16 main Suthra or formulae and this simplifies new learnings.

    Uniqueness of Vedic math

Many methods in Vedic math are unique and they were not known to modern math. Let’s learn uniqueness of Vedic math.

Only 16 Suthra or formulae cover all the methods.

Vedic math methods are integrated as a system.

Vedic math methods are more suitable for mental math.

Vedic math methods are simple and they are interrelated to each other.

Vedic math methods are 2 to 5 times faster than traditional methods.

    Advantages of Vedic math

Simple mental methods that enhance mathematical intelligence.

Vedic methods are 2 - 5 times faster than traditional methods. This helps solving questions quickly and correctly.

Quick for learning as same methods are used in different branches of math.

    History of Vedic Math

Math has been a part of Vedic literature. Even though timing of Vedas is not known, historians predict that they were authored sometime between 500 BC to 1500 BC or even earlier. Shree Bharathi Krushna Teerthaji reinvented methods in Vedic math. He was a brilliant student and obtained honours in all the subjects he studied i.e. Savskruth, philosophy, English, mathematics, history and science. Between 1911 and 1918, he reconstructed ancient system of mathematics i.e. now called Vedic mathematics. Shree Bharathi Krushna wrote 16 books expanding 16 formulae but those were lost. In 1958, Shree Bharathi Krushna authored a book called Vedic Mathematics. This is the only body of knowledge available today.

How Vedic math is different from abacus?

This is a very common question and many parents are curious about it. Abacus is so popular now days that many people ask this question to me. It is important to understand that abacus requires a tool i.e. counting frame. Such tools are not allowed in any exam or cannot be used in daily life. Abacus is useful only for basic arithmetic. Vedic math is a completely new way of doing math. Vedic math is mental and very fast as compared to other methods. Therefore, side-by-side comparison of Vedic math and abacus is practically impossible. Still if you want to understand the difference then below table summarizes it.

Note: I am not an abacus expert so if you think this section needs correction, kindly communicate it to me.

Is Vedic math recognized outside of India?

Short answer of this question is Yes. Vedic math has been appreciated across the globe. Special sessions have been arranged in well-known universities like Stanford and Oxford on this topic. Few schools in UK only teach Vedic math. Foreign authors have written many books on Vedic math. Western mathematicians are also researching how Vedic methods can be applied in areas like trigonometry and calculus.

Why shall I learn Vedic math?

It increases interest in mathematics, as the methods are very easy as compared to traditional math.

It enhances mathematical intelligence, as these methods are mental methods.

If you have ever learnt math in traditional way then it is fun to learn how easy math can be.

It helps you to check your answers in exams.

No need to remember multiplication tables beyond 5.

Most of the formulae are similar for all branches of mathematics so no need to learn new methods for advanced math.

Why Vedic math is not taught in schools?

Few schools outside India are teaching Vedic math and even few schools in India teach Vedic Math. In India, it is not being taught in most of the schools and even I am surprised by this. Some people ask me why they shall learn Vedic Math when it is not useful in school. Vedic math helps to check answers. It also helps in quick calculations. Remembering multiplication tables above 5 is not required if you know Vedic math. Few kids are afraid of large numbers and Vedic math eliminates this fear. It also helps in exams where time is critical.

Many people ask me if kids will be confused between school math and Vedic math. My observation is quite different. Kids exactly know what to apply where and they have been using appropriate methods at right place.
