Claudia Nice is an accomplished artist and has created several incredible books on drawing. However, I think this one tried to bite off more than it can chew. Most of her other books are not focused on "how to draw" so much as teaching you how to render, which is creating more detail and realism in your drawing. I think that's where this one went wrong. It's supposed to teach you how to draw and paint trees, but I don't think it did a great job of it. Very little time is spent talking about how to draw trees--which is the basic skill you need to have for the rest of the book. Then, moving forward, Claudia gives several step-by-step demonstrations using 4 different mediums. Yes, you read that right. Four. She covers pen and ink, watercolor, acrylic, and oil. The demonstrations range from something a beginner could possibly copy, to slightly more detailed and advanced techniques. That being said, I don't think enough time was spent on any one medium for someone to walk away feeling they had truly developed a strong skill. If you're really interested in learning how to draw trees, you're better off grabbing a book by Denis John-Naylor, or if you're really serious you could go for The Anatomy of Trees by Rix Vicat Cole (which is also here on Scribd to read). You can also find good tutorials for drawing trees from Dianne Wright or Mike Sibley, online free of charge. For painting trees in watercolor, you may want to go for books by Terry Harrison, Geoff Kersey, or Adelene Fletcher. For painting trees in oil (or acrylic for that matter), I'd look into the classes offered by Michael James Smith, who also posts free Youtube videos. Basically, this might be one of the last books I would pick up. Surprisingly, this is one of the few books written by Claudia on Scribd, where you can read everything inside of it without a problem. That's really too bad, haha!
